DVDs, DVDs, DVDs!

Post by Sulley »

Hey guys, I know I haven't posted in a while, but I'm still here! I still know that this is the place to ask questions about DVDs! I thought I'd ask all my questions about the following DVD releases right here, instead of spreading it across four threads, so here goes. :D

(Question #1) When will the following movies, which have either never been released on DVD or are Out Of Print, be put on DVD?

Bringing Up Baby (1938)
The Jazz Singer (1927)
Duck Soup (1933) and the other 4 Paramount Marx Bros. Features
Wuthering Heights (1939)
King Kong (1933)
Double Indemnity (1944)
Raging Bull (1980)
The African Queen (1951)

(Question #2) I don't have a Widescreen TV, but that doesn't mean one is not in my future, and I simply like to have the best transfer possible, so are there any plans to re-release any of these widescreen movies that are now on non-anamorphic DVDs?

The Wild Bunch (1969)
The Manchurian Candidate (1962) [remake this summer = possible rerelease?]
Midnight Cowboy (1969)
Annie Hall (1977)
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Vertigo (1958)
To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
Psycho (1960)

(Question #3) We all know that Two-Disc Special Editions is what Warner Brothers Home Entertainment does best. Are any of the following films candidates for a 2-disc re-realease from WB?

The Searchers (1956)
Ben-Hur (1959)
An American in Paris (1951)
Network (1976)
Stagecoach (1939)
Rebel Without a Cause (1955)
A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)
North by Northwest (1959)
Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
A Clockwork Orange (1971) [Also on non-anamorphic list in #2]
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) [I know it's doubtful since it was just released]
The Philadelphia Story (1940)
The Wizard of Oz (1939) [Doubtful because of its fantastic single-disc treatment]
Gone with the Wind (1939)
The Wild Bunch (1969) [Also on non-anamorphic list in #2]
The Maltese Falcon (1941)

(Question #4) We recently addressed the fact that Columbia Home Entertainment has released 1954's Oscar winner, On the Waterfront, in a pan in scan version, claiming it to be presented in its Original Theatrical Aspect Ratio. Are we ever going to see a proper DVD of this classic film in its OAR?

An anamorphic Manchurian Candidate Special Edition is coming out in July:

That's all I know.

That's about the only one I expected to be answered clearly. Thanks anyway, though. But anyone who has anymore input, please post it. I just read a review of The Marx Brothers Collection that came out last week, and it said that the Marx Bros. Paramout features were due out later this year. Anyone know anything?

It took me a while to search for this, but here's a link that will give you many answers to question #3 and tell you everything Warner Brothers is working on. It's a long transcript but well worth the read.

Thanks SO MUCH! That was a HUGE help! Pretty much everything in Question #3 is being revisited in the next two years, with the exeption of Ben-Hur and North By Northwest. Also releases for Bringing Up Baby, King Kong, and The Jazz Singer! This is great! :D :D :D

Wow, FANTASTIC link, Poppins.

Great news for me on:

Gone With The Wind
Everwood
Sweeney Todd
Seven Brides For Seven Brothers (never seen but want to)
Beetlejuice
Lois & Clark
Animaniacs
Pinky & The Brain
Matrix Box Set
BATMAN (cartoons & movies!!)
Night Court
...Some others I can't remember

Bad news on:

Clara's Heart & Burglar (whoever asked 'bout these in the same question must be a Whoopi fan :D)
The Witches
...Some others I can't remember

I wish they would have asked:

-Will Willy Wonka get an upgrade?
-Will WOZ get an upgrade?
-Details of the 10th season Friends release
...Some others I'm too tired to think of
