But, no... I don't know, just the way the say it... It just sounds weird to me. Maybe it's the emphasis that they are putting on the words or their tones of voice or something, but it just sounds like it's backwards.

That's been a big source of debate amongst Alice fans as to whether or not it was an editing mistake. Apparently it was intentional. About a year or two ago I stumbled upon an awesome blog about classic Disney animation, so of course I did a search there to see what they had written about Alice. I found scans of the entire script from the late 1940s that was meant for the animators to use as reference. The first thing I did was go to the mad tea party section and see how the end of the watch destruction was handled, and lo and behold, they had it typed out exactly as it appears in the film. Unfortunately, I can't remember what blog it was or how I came across it, but it had tons of original sketches and artwork from Walt-era films along with memos and other production documents. If I ever find it again, I'll post it here.

I always thought that exchange was funny and made perfect sense (as explained above) in a Wonderland sort of way of making sense.

I remember stumbling upon that site too when procrastinating one day and also had a look at those sequence plans, yet equally lost the website. I typed in "alice in wonderland animators" on Google Images just now, and lo and behold, I found that site, and the sequence plans, again! Here are the pages on that blog relating to Alice:

EDIT: And by the way, does anyone find it interesting how, in a number of these drafts), there seem to be mentions of planned shots being cut (with little indication about what they consisted of), and what these little tidbits may have been like?

That's it! Major kudos, Wondy, for finding that!

Those notations that indicate shots have been cut out are tantalizing, indeed. It would've been amazing had they noted what was shown and said. It also makes me wonder whether more deleted animation doesn't exist in the Disney vaults outside of what we've see on DVD and BD. I realize it would've been been too expensive to make it all the way to ink and paint, but perhaps there are unused sketches of these cut shots. Perhaps even several consecutive cut drawings that could add up to a few second's worth of deleted animation. It's probably more likely that the animators trashed whatever they didn't use, but you never know. Disney was pretty much the only studio of its time that saved everything, even if it seemed useless at the time.

Margos wrote:You know... I just noticed something. I'm fairly certain I've noticed it before, but it's never bugged me enough to remember it. Here's a bit of dialogue from the Tea Party sequence:

White Rabbit: Oh, my watch....
Mad Hatter: It was!?
White Rabbit: ...and it was an unbirthday present, too....
March Hare: Well, in that case....!

Doesn't it seem like the Rabbit's second line and the Hatter's are switched? Do you think it could have been put together incorrectly when using Ed Wynn's live-action reference vocal track? It just really bugs me, because it just doesn't make any sense, even for Alice in Wonderland.
WHAT THE HELL ... ?

I just checked YouTube and that's the way it is there too.

I know this movie like the back of my hand and if they did that, it most certainly IS a mistake! The Mad Hatter does not say "IT WAS?!" before the Rabbit says "and it was an Un-Birthday Present too."

I'm going to check my Masterpiece Edition VHS either today or tomorrow to make sure. (I checked the Blog but did not find any mention of this strange dialogue question)

It's right here (took me a while to find it, too)

http://ftp.afilm.com/blog/2069_Alice_Draft_090.jpg

What's interesting is that: a) there was a shot cut in between "Oh, my watch" and "It was?!" and b) the White's Rabbit's "yes" right before "and it was an unbirthday present, too" was cut out. That might be why the editing seems a little abrupt in the film. I think the cut away after the Hatter's "it was?!" is a tad too soon, almost making it sound like, "it wa-". Perhaps the "s" overlapped with the White Rabbit's deleted "yes," and both got the axe.

At the store I work at, someone had donated this DVD, but it only had Disc 2 in it. I spent my 50 cents and bought Disc 2, but I just glanced through Kelvin's review and a few posts in here, and Disc 2 has nothing that the Masterpiece Edition doesn't have, right? So I kind of wasted my 50 cents? (Although the DMR code worked for me, so it's not a complete loss. :p)

Yeah, there's no difference between the second discs of each set except how they're placed on the menu (the ME puts them across two pages with descriptions underneath each listing; the UAE removes the descriptions and sticks them all on the same page). Disc one of the UAE is where you'll find the new "Reflections on Alice" featurette and "Pig and Pepper" deleted scene.

Remember how I criticised all of you for being so overly negative when this one came out, because the dvd has a truckload of great bonus features and it was nice to see a decent dvd-release from Disney, for those who didn't already own it?

Well, forget all that. I'm royally pissed. It has just finally came out in The Netherlands... It's only 1 disc! Just like the last time Alice came out! I was expecting a great set and I got stuck with one lousy disk! How is this a 'special edition'? I could live with it, if this was an exact copy of the American equivalent, like the bare-bones Fantasia/2000 scam. But there is absolutely no logical explanation why the Dutch should only receive one disc! Why give us a 2-disc on Beauty and the Beast and a 1-disc for this movie? It's like what they did with Pocahontas in The Netherlands!

It's these kind of irrational, inexplicable things that makes me loathe the Disney Corporation! Like Don Rosa said, "the evil empire"!

Special Un-Anniversary Edition

Post by Christopher_TCUIH »

<b>I got this movie in September or October of 2010 just because I missed disney movies. I hadn't been to disneyland since I was in elementary school so when we went for Grad Night it really sparked my disney love again! This is the first time I've ever owned Alice in Wonderland on dvd. I love it! I would have loved an actual documentary about how this film was made or some audio commentary. I think this movie deserves more goodies than the dvd has. I read online that the Alice in Wonderland 60th Anniversary edition doesn't have that many bonus materials on it either. I love the name too! "Un-Anniversary" Is it just me or anyone else happy this movie didn't have FASTPLAY? I don't like fast play haha so I was surprised when the box didn't say it in the right lower corner or the spine! :D</b>
