That reminds me...

So basically you have two options:

a) Buy all the treasures for $2,000

or

b) Get a D23 account and buy them all for about $630.

BREAKING NEWS... And not all of it good, I'm afraid...

On the upside, I just ordered 1 more Disney DVD.

On the downside, I believe I've just gotten ripped off for the first time. :( It's not eBay's fault, though we all know how dangerous that place is. Especially buying out of print and collector's stuff. It was probably likely to happen sooner or later.

Not only has my Lady and the Tramp: Platinum Edition not yet shipped and it's been 6 days since I ordered it. But the seller now has 2 counts of negative feedback in the last like few weeks saying the buyer didn't get their item, the seller doesn't respond to questions asked, and they need a refund from PayPal.

(EDIT:
Good news, so far. Though I'm sure I had reason to doubt the seller, eBay and PayPal now indicate that Lady and the Tramp has shipped today. And it comes with USPS tracking which has also confirmed for me exactly when I was going to get Sleeping Beauty, Little Mermaid, Cinderella, and Three Caballeros. So, I trust everything is going to go as planned in delivering it to me. Now I just have to hope it's exactly new, unopened, and that the discs aren't loose inside the case when it gets to my mailbox.)

Back to the original post:

In other not-so-good news... my Little Mermaid: Platinum came in on Saturday and was severely damaged. Both discs. Brand new and sealed / wrapped up. But the person who sealed / wrapped it up had scratched the discs and not bothered to tell anyone. And that's not the first DVD I've gotten like that. Does anyone know if there's some new and horrible epidemic that's striking the people who work on DVD packaging lines? Where they can't hold the discs in their hands firmly, so they toss them around like they're flipping pizzas? Anyway, the seller wasn't responsible for this but they gave me a refund (which I desperately needed) and told me I didn't need to send the damaged set back.

All this really makes me think about my strange preference of feeling like I need to buy NEW rather than USED. Well, I fixed that this time. I actually just found a seller on eBay with an impeccable feedback rating & over 1200 people they've sold to. They say in the description of the condition of it that they've only watched it once (which may not be true) and that it's completely scratch-free (which I'm choosing to believe). So, while I'm probably going to be screwed on Lady and the Tramp, at least I have a good replacement while I wait.

The 10th Disney DVD I will soon be adding to my collection... (22 to go!) :

Inevitable, wasn't it? I seem to be going a bit mad for those Platinum Editions... :D

^About your Lady and the Tramp wait, I didn't receive my Lion King: PE until 14 days after I ordered it. True, it didn't have a jacket, and the cover art was printed off... even though it was advertised as 'new'. But the discs were in perfect shape, and the above factors had nothing to do with the long wait.

Oh yeah, I know this is a time to breathe now. I was a little scared for a second there. Only at the prospect of having to hunt down yet another cheap copy of Lady and the Tramp, instead of just getting it over with now. I'm not worried anymore- when USPS tracks it, it always comes.

A tip for anyone on Ebay, watch out for the "new and sealed" term. I have run into a few sellers who will rewrap the DVDs and claim that they are sealed. It is quite possible to get damaged discs that way, especially if you do not know what to look for. They can get away with it because many buyers are clueless.

I too feel a need to get discs 'new' but chances are the used disc is better than the new and sealed one.

After all, for what reason would you keep a new and sealed copy of one of the Platinums for years?

In any case, I think the most pirated movies are Snow White, Beauty and the Beast and Lion King with possibly the Fantasia Anthology also in contention.

Most of the rest are either too recently released or have been reissued in another country. After all, why would anyone get a Masterpiece Edition of Alice when the Un-Anniversary completely outclasses it?

Snow White should be less of a risk now with the new one out and soon BATB and TLK will follow suit.

Geez. You'd think that one could just get a decent copy (then again, this is eBay we're talking about).

The disc was completely spotless! About time after all the eBay gambles I've taken, too.

Time to start really getting back-on-track with my collecting. I finally decided to splurge and get 3 more. Now I'm almost half-way to meeting my goal of animated must-haves (32 total).

And the 12th, 13th, and 14th discs I'm adding to my Disney DVD collection are... :

Made another eBay order for my 18th Disney DVD. I'm hoping everything turns out well but all the sellers selling this had a lot of negative comments. I could have chosen the guy with 89 negative (this month alone) or the guy with 11. I chose the guy with 11, because I've used the 89 guy on Amazon.com and way too many of the discs I got back were scratched / came loose in the case.

it's always fun when you get a new format and up the purchases.

I mean, I myself have upwards of fifty Blu-rays after two years, most of which came in the last year.

But 16 DVDs already! Laz, you are on a ROLL!!!! :D

Actually, it's incredibly stressful. Out of the 21 so far, 5 sets have been bootlegs. I decided to go through my discs last night, flipped them over and looked for consistencies in the little circle in the middle. Basically, all of the true Disney DVD's have these barcode symbol things in the middle circle. My: Fantasia, Bambi, Cinderella, Lady and the Tramp, and Little Mermaid DVD's are missing those. And I have problems with 4 out of 5 of the discs too. So, I need to replace most of them. They're very convincing forgeries, though. But there were other signs.

For example, the Little Mermaid discs say "Desc 1 and Desc 2" instead of Disc. Fantasia and Little Mermaid don't have the correct "DisneyDVD" symbol on the covers. Cinderella's printed cover is too dark. Lady and the Tramp's 2nd disc won't work in my Region-1 player. And the Bambi and Lady and the Tramp disc art is printed screwy. The colors look almost solarized (an example, though I'm sure you know what that is: http://www.daemery.com/images/Digital/02-09%20Golden%20Gate%20Bridge%20DSC04449%20solarize%2011x14%20web.jpg).

As for the movies, Bambi and Lady seem to play well (the discs are brand new on most, though again they are not original). Cinderella is fine except the picture pixelates for a fraction of a second during dissolves and color fades up from black. Little Mermaid is fine except there's a huge block of pixels for a moment during "Kiss the Girl" (when Eric guesses her name is Ariel). But, Fantasia is a royal mess. The whole movie is pixelated and some scenes are painful to try and watch. I'm sure the odd Timon-Pumbaa Fan or Waltmad user is really laughing their head off right now, but I got screwed $20 on Fantasia and what really makes me mad is that the seller was so nice and would have easily refunded me. I just took too long to sit down and watch the movie. I thought only the bonus features would be affected. Too late to ask for my money back. Not necessarily their fault the disc was a bootleg.

3 more eBay orders for my 19th, 20th, and 21st Disney DVD's. This seller has one of the best reputations on eBay, so I know I can trust them. The Ichabod & Mr. Toad disc was used and very scratched but the seller gave me a partial refund in exchange for positive feedback. So, in case my copy screws up- I have some money toward a new one. These other 2 are brand-new though.

I'm sorry to hear that you've had trouble with bootlegs on eBay, that really is a shame. I've seen posts before about others saying eBay was a dangerous place, but I never really understood why. I do a lot of buying and selling on eBay and so far I've never had an issue. Are most the problems with collector and/or OOP items? I've never bought something like that on eBay, and mostly just stick to the newer releases.

I'd always thought a bootleg would be easy to spot right out of the gate, is this not the case? Are some bootlegs of such good quality that you would never be able to tell? I'm very critcal of things, so I'd always thought I'd be able to tell when something wasn't right.

Maybe I'm just being silly, but have you ever thought of being your Disney DVDs at an actual store? I see nothing wrong with purchasing them on eBay, but you're less likely to get a boot-leg copy if you buy a copy at Best Buy or Blockbuster or some other video retailer (I can't speak for Wal-Mart, though. ). Just something I'm curious about.
