Brett Ratner Plans Updated Snow White

Post by Mason_Ireton »

First came Jungle Book(1994) then 101 Dalmations (1996), couple years later we get Alice In Wonderland (2010). Currently there's a rumor of Cinderella being put in live action and now I think Brett Ratner's gone off the deep end with this announcement

The classic children's fairy tale, "Snow White" will be getting an updated live-action retelling courtesy of Brett Ratner and Relativity Media, Deadline reports.

The new version, said to take an "edgy" and comedic look at the original Brothers Grimm story will come from a script written by Melisa Wallack, whose sole produced credit is the 2007 Aaron Eckhart film Bill, which Wallack co-directed.

Claiming, "This is not your grandfather's 'Snow White,'" Ratner promises a departure from the Disney version of the film.

"His dwarves were miners, and here they are robbers. There is also a dragon that was in the original folk tale... [O]urs is edgy and there is more comedy. The original, made for its time, was soft compared to what we're going to do."

Ratner will produce alongside Wallack's Bill co-director, Bernie Goldmann.

But is this a Disney project? The article doesn't make it very clear, even though it refers to the 1937 movie, it just says this movie is "different". If it is Disney, and I don't think it is, it might be one animated film update too many. Regardless, I'm not too interested in this project at all judging by the description...

Yeah Umberella I double checked the article to see if they mentioned which studio wil produce this film, I think we should know that if it was Disney greenlighting this project then John Lassester and loyal disney fans would have a major fit with this "edgy" remake.

The concept of the dwarfs being robbers sounds interesting, to be honest, I can't see 7 real midgets playing the dwarfs.

So, Bret Ratner. Yeah, I'll Pass. In my opinion he hasn't done any movie that was worth my time. Especially X-Men 3 - thanks to that tragedy he ruined at least half of the main characters.

Anyway, this isn't a Disney film (or distributed by). It's Relativity Media, which means that the distribution goes to either Lionsgate, Sony or Universal.

What I did wonder after reading that article was what happened to that Snow White-ish project Disney was working on quite a few years ago... Snow and the Seven. Some sort of Kung Fu movie if I remember correctly. According to IMDB it's still on track for 2010, but that's probably BS. Probably got the axe a long time ago.

Still, who wants to bet that the vast majority of people who aren't hardcore movie buffs will just assume it's Disney?

I was thinking about that, too. Seems that project just went off course- and I doubt we're any the worse for it, either.

I haven't seen Snow White: Tale Of Terror, but I heard it's really good. This guy bet'ter not tarnish Snow White, from what I heard he's responsible for murdering The X Men

Another article on the same subject had an interesting tidbit.
Snow is just one of many fairytale remakes in the works. Disney is planning 'reimaginings' of Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, and New Line, Disney, and Warner Bros. are each planning a new Wizard Of Oz film, now that Baum’s books are back in the public domain.

I haven't found any other source that says Disney is remaking Sleeping Beauty, so take that for what it's worth.

Hmmm there was a dragon in Happily Ever After, but that is the only dragon in any Snow White adaptation I've seen. And if it's anything remotely like that... This project is
doomed.

I don't remember the Jabberwock trying to kill Alice either, but that's in one of these movies. Just saying.

I'd say the sleeping beauty "re-imagining" refers to the "Maleficent" movie.

There was no dragon in the original story...

And if he CARES about the original story, he wouldn't make the dwarfs robbers!

UNLESS he provides more about this supposed dragon and reason for robbers....
I'm pretty sure this guy doesn't know what the f*** he is talking about, with the original story or Disney's classic masterpiece or how to make movies...
