Official World Cup 2010 Thread

It's almost time for the 2010 World Cup, who is watching?! I'm rooting for the US, which normally is one of the big under dogs each year mostly because my country sucks when it comes to soccer fandom. But I keep rooting for them anyway! I'm really looking forward to the US/ England game, it's going to be awesome!

I don't know much about soccer. The only time I watch it, is the world championships (or european championships). I know Brazil, France and Italy are always performing well, so I voted for Brazil. I would be surprised if my country, The Netherlands, would make it past the first round.

I don't watch football, but the rest of my family does ... and football is big in Europe. Anyway, I'd be a traitor to my own country if I sided with any nation other than Italy. Those guys are like our big brothers. I love them.

Forza Italia! Even though I get bored watching football for more than 5 minutes!

Julian Carter, that's why I voted for Italy, too. Do I care about "soccer?" No, not really... I'm not a sports person. But I'm an Italian girl from an Italian family, and I felt like supporting the "old country."

I'm only 25% Italian, but I was raised in a pretty hard-core Italian-American household.

Great, the crazy soccer times are back... again. I will watch though. The Netherlands won't win... nor make it past, at best the second round. America is useless in soccer competitions. Always have been, will probably always remain that way. So, I can hardly see them winning. I really believe Italy and Brazil both have a pretty good shot at winning this time.

Oh, that's nothing. Maradona already promised to run naked through Buenos Aires if Argentina wins the World Cup. If that's not a reason to lose, I don't know what is

So what channels show the cup outside of the US? We get it on ESPN here, which I guess make it a Disney production kind of/ sort of.

So according the EA Sports, Spain will win the Cup with Brazil coming in second and England third. Thoughts on that?

I will probably only watch the highlights of the days games on ESPN because Soccer is one of two sports I cannot tolerate watching on television.

The other sport is Hockey.

Both of these move to fast for the cameras to follow the action and the are enjoyed much more in person.

I used to hate Soccer until I went to my first game, and now I totally refuse to watch it on television, but will quit my job to go see it at the stadium in person.

Same with hockey. I didn't understand the game, all the different phrasing the announcers were using, so I bought the book "Ice Hockey for Dummies" and went to see a couple of matches in person, and now I am hooked for life. Ice Hockey is amazing in person, and another sport I won't watch on television, just the highlights on Sportcenter.

I would agree that it does not translate as well on tv. Much different feeling when you are there live and even more different when you are playing.

That said, nothing beats a nail bitter in the Cup!

Tonight Italy playe against Paraguay. It ended 1-1. I always root for the Latin-American countries, but who will I root for when Honduras is up against Chile? This week, Brazil is playing against North-Korea. I'm fascinated that they even participate. Isn't the World Championship soccer 'a horrible capitalistic evil event'? I just to joke about North-Korea entering, and then I was baffled to learn they do! I still can't understand how a country that's *that* isolated from the rest of the world could make it to the World Championship... and why they would even *want* to enter in the first place.

I feel bad for the North-Korean team. I fear what will happen to them if they are out early in the competition and have to go home. That'll be a one-way ticket to a labour camp for them. We can joke about it, but in a way it's absurd that such a country is even allowed to participate.

Although... I would love to see a match North-Korea against South-Korea.

Japan sucks despite their many soccer manga produced, may lead you to believe.

Actually I hear that Netherlands is a high contender for championship cup this year.

I tend to agree, I feel bad for the North Korean team. They played amazing against Brazil, they really impressed me!

Anyway, after England's game against the US, I don't see how anyone rooting for them could honestly think they have a prier this year. I;d say that goes for Brazil as well. In fact the only major soccer power house playing amazing right now is Germany. Let's see if that keeps up of course.
