Ever criticized for being a Disney fan?

I'm more surprise at the people saying they get more criticism for liking video games of all things... I thought this day and age video games is more and more commonly "accepted" in this age of rapid technology generation...

Yes video games have become more "accepted" in this day and age, but I'm a GIRL that plays video games. Video games have been seen as a "male" hobby. At a certain Gamestop that's not even a ten minute drive from my house, I would get dirty looks from male employees because it would seem like I'm invading their turf or I'm just another stupid female customer. One time, I was in Gamestop with my dad to get another wiimote, nunchuck and a new Wii game the salesguy just assumed that I was buying this stuff for my dad and said "What a sweet girl you are, buying a gift for your dad are we?" My dad looked the salesguy in the eyes and said "Nope, this stuff is for my DAUGHTER!" It can get pretty bad if I beat a guy at a video game. I automatically get accused of cheating.

I've been made fun of for liking Disney, especially in high school, but I was picked on for everything, really. I wouldn't mind; I thought it was just too immature to tease other kids for what they liked. I also got a lot of comments from my father and other family members for watching Disney cartoons and reading Donald Duck comics (they still exist here!) when I was a teenager, but they accepted it later on. Anyway, I never cared about their opinions, as I think the least of them and I almost never see them anymore. In college, I was never made fun of for liking Disney. I was doing Film- and Television Studies, and researching and writing essays on Disney was a legitimate subject.

I've never been made fun of for being a Disney fan, but I'm more worried about being made fun of for being a Nintendo fan. At my school (or any school for that matter) most gamers are Xbox and PS3 fanboys that would ridicule me for being a Nintendo fan. I love Nintendo just as much as Disney, and I don't care if they like me about it or not.

When it comes to Disney, it seems like The Lion King is fairly popular around here, and probably Aladdin, so I should be fine when talking about them since they're my favorites. I guess I would get a negative response if I was to talk about the older classic films. The notion of Disney being only for kids is flat out false. Walt Disney knew and every Disney fan knows the world of Disney knows no age limit.

I dont ridicule you for a being a Nintendo fan. I have a Wii and a DS and I buy games for them occassionally. I just have my preferred system in-between such releases.

^Yeah, Im beginning to think it's hard to be that reasonable. I mean:

Xbox has good online, a more comfortable controller, and they're the native system for multiplatformers

PS3 has free online, blu-ray and media, better exclusive games, better user interface, and a slicker design.

My parents don't care that I like Disney, comic books, video games etc. As long as I don't blow my whole paycheck on the stuff. Bills, food and my personal hygiene stuff take top priority THEN it's onto the fun stuff. I'm going to see what video game console I can win this year at San Diego Comic Con. Last year, I won a Nintendo Wii. Ended up giving it to a friend of mine that REALLY wanted it. Funny thing was, I wasn't even trying to win the Wii. I wanted the second place prize which was a bunch of Wii games.

What then that mus be now because when I was growing up people made fun of me saying I was imature because I liked Disney Films and Shows perhaps poeple are growing up. I sure hope so, but even now poeple bug me sometimes, I mean really grow up I like other things too, but Disney will always be my favorite.

Sort of, yes. However, most of such criticisms were, in retrospect, relatively minor. That happened when I was in school, from elementary school right up through the early years of high school. In that instance, I was just basically told some unkind remarks about my interest in Disney by the other kids in my class (i.e., "Mickey Mouse is dead!", "Disneyland burned down!", "I killed Walt Disney!", etc.).

But it really did hurt me in those days. They just neither could nor would understand that I like Disney a lot. Then again, it might have something to do with my having Asperger's. It was not until just as I started 5th grade that I was diagnosed with it.

I should note that I grew up when the Fab Four dominated the screens. People absolutely loved them and everyone became Disney fans because of it. In fact people found it cool if you had anything Disney related. I remember when The Lion King was released and in my case at least it was the Star Wars and Matrix of our era. Everyone, from the smallest pre-schooler to the biggest adult, HAD to go see The Lion King in theaters. I remember when I went to see it with my parents the theater was packed, and it wasn't just kids. There were many adults by themselves.

I say I am criticized for being a videogame fan far more than a Disney fan because society has formed a case against them, despite us living in the Wii Sports/Fit era of gaming. While people may say that Disney is childish, no one will say that it's dangerous being a fan. However, you try to make a defense about gaming and people look at you funny (I am a teacher and in one class I openly admitted that I was a gamer and people found that odd).

^That means your not much older than I am. I was a baby when Beauty and the Beast came out, so most of my early Disney days revolved around countless VHS viewings. Didnt really go to the theater until I was about 5.
