Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

$200 million is still a lot, and more than enough to make a decent action movie. Despite that, I'm not sure how well it would do. I think the fatigue has already set in after two lackluster sequels, so a fourth movie could really be overkill. Perhaps they could make something that's more like the first one, but I really doubt it.

That might be so, but there's a reason why budgets get bigger and bigger following each successful film in a franchise. Returning actors demand bigger paychecks - Johnny Depp reportedly gets 75 million (not 50 like I thought in the beginning) for this one, which would account for almost half of the budget already (including the rest of the cast, Penelope Cruz will probably also get some ridiculous amount). So there you have 100-120 million for the screenplay, visual effects, production costs, a director, producers, music, etc. - which is crazy. There will no doubt be made cuts in the script in order to evade expensive scenes.

What also boggles my mind is that a completely random and risky (well, somewhat) film like Tron: Legacy was reaching a budget of, what was it again... 300 million (not confirmed though), while an already established franchise like the Pirates are basically getting a defaulted Bruckheimer budget. Which I know, is still a lot, but taking everything into account...

Well, anyways, I just hope it'll be better than the last two. They felt rather lackluster. I'm also pretty glad Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly are gone, they're just too bland for my taste.

Well, it might not become a relationship, but Penelope Cruz has been cast as Jack's 'love interest'. So, I wonder how that will play out.

I didn't want him to have a love interest... It just doesn't seem like his character, you know?

I am also glad that Will and Elizabeth are gone, they went way downhill after the first movie.

Maybe they will pull a Sherlock Holmes-type deal, wherein though Rachel McAdams' character was advertised as being a love interest for Holmes, she was actually more of a foil.

Jack's a Pirate Player...though everyone does have a though of a couple being together.....and im Jure even Jack might have thought about that once...albeit then he probably went to get some rum to get the rubbish thought out of is head

I'll go and see this movie .... but certainly out of my group of friends, it seems as if I'll be the only one :s people seem to have lost faith in the films. Again, as you guys are all saying, either part two or three killed the love of the franchise off for them.

How much was the budget for the first one ? I dont know if that would be any judge against the fourth one.

If the script and story are wonderful, and the locations are beautiful and sunny, I dont think they need to rape our eyes with effect after affect ! Or that could just be me ?

I'm sorry, but I don't believe for a moment that Johnny Depp will get 75 million dollars for this, even 50 million is reaching a bit high. Penelope Cruz isn't that big of a star, so she won't get that kind of money at all. So in the worst case you have 150 million dollars for making the movie, and that's not unreasonable at all.

A) Put Jack Sparrow in a relationship
B) Kill Jack Sparrow
C) Take away Jack Sparrow's rum

I agree with b and c, but personally I would like to see jack in proper, strong, somewhat eccentric relation ship with a woman. I can see him having a very, very unique dare I say it marriage, having all kinds of adventures and pulling all kinds of cons etc together, you know two heads are better than one kind of thing .

I guess it would be silly to assume anything else .... Disney is fully embracing 3D; with Pirates as one of its biggest money-makers, I fully expected the fourth film to be a 3D outing.

I wonder if it will be filmed in 3D, or filmed normally and then converted fully. If they wanted to keep budgets down, they could only convert certain scenes, like Clash of the Titans did.

Well, turns out it won't be ugly, upconverted 3D (in the same manner as Alice in Wonderland, Clash of the Titans), but the Pirates will actually be shot in 3D. I love how Disney contradicts themselves so many times... budget constraints my ass.

Still don't like 3D, so won't see it in 3D. But for the people who do like watching movies in 3D, I guess this is good news.

I'm excited, but I think that they are going to screw it up really badly. So maybe I'm more nervous....?

I'm being cautiously optimistic about this since they've already written a script based on existing source material. Compare that to the Pirates sequels where the scripts were written as each were being shot, and they ended up getting more and more convoluted. With this new one, they've taken their time in pre-production, and they've got a linear storyline they can follow. Because of that, I'm expecting (hoping?) this one ends up feeling more like the first one.

It does make me wonder if we'll see re-releases of the trilogy on DVD and BD. There are deleted scenes from the sequels that are known to exist that are probably being saved for a future release. There's no better time to do so than next year.
