>>I was very disappointed to receive the newst monthly offer and not find any new releases as club exclusives. I hope Disney plans on releasing the remaining theatrical releases on dvd and the television movies also.<<

At the very least!

So is the Exclusives line dead? They've never gone this long between releases.

My fear is that Disney has once again abandoned a line...in fact...it seems to be their M.O.

Has anyone heard a hint or a rumor or a whisper of anything new in the Exclusives?

No Treasures announced, neither.

Right now the club is at a low ebb. We're not even getting Dumbo or Fantasia as promised.

Your right.
A repackaged Alice In Wonderland isn't much.

Some suspicions about Disney Movies

Post by DexterRiley »

I was talking to a producer at Disney the other day and he told me that Disney records is making a major move towards 100% digital download. He's not thrilled about this as he likes physical product as much as we do. He has a scheme that he's working on to make "collectible" special limited editions available but it's in the embryonic stage right now.

Having noticed that Universal, MGM, and Warner Brothers all now offer "made to order" DVD-Rs on Amazon of backlist titles that (they feel) are not popular enough to warrant a pressed physical DVD...I'm wondering if the new Disney records deal with Amazon is just part of a larger movement and that we might actually see future "exclusive" releases on "made to order" DVDs. In a way, it kind of solves a few sticky issues. First, it gets the more obscure material out and paves the way for releases from the anthology series as well as other esoteric material that would NEVER get a physical release. It also solves Disney's long-standing hate affair with the permanence of DVDs. For anyone not equipped to back them up, these DVDs would presumably expire at some point and their quality would be presumably dictated by single layer encoding. Thirdly, as these releases are absolutely no-frills...even down to not remastering for the most part...with no dedicated artwork...they're VERY cheap for the studio to offer. Basically they license the works out to Amazon or some other vendor and the onus of cost and shipping is on the vendor.

It's just a suspicion on my part but in an age where physical product and stores seem to be disappearing daily, it wouldn't surprise me if it is the path of Disney's future. I don't know what it would mean for the Disney Movie Club...how long would they continue to offer physical product for a dwindling audience?

If DVD/CD-on-demand (ala Universal and TCM) is the only way to get the remaining Walt Disney library films and music out to the public, I'm all for it -- so long as a hard copy DVD to keep is made and sent - - and it's NOT time-release/"self-destruct"/limited-number-of-plays -- nor just a download.

After all of the ennui -- to intentionally make content expire is unfair to the loyal consumers who have waited so long for this material.

And to be successful, it has to be all the stuff that hasn't been released yet (such as the Annette TV movies, VonDrake TV episodes.. and well, you've seen the lists repeatedly).

They should also consider making DVD quality "collectors" hard copies available online or through D23 or at Disneyland. There is still a market for this while the baby boomers are active. Now is the time.

A "digital download" is the last thing I want for older, unreleased live-action films. Hopefully they will follow the Warner Archive model and offer both a download and a physical DVDr. It's not a perfect system (my failure rate for discs from Warner is about 1 in 10, and I've got over 50 now), but I suppose it's better than nothing at all. Old VHS tapes of the unreleased titles sell for too much on Amazon and eBay, otherwise I'd actually prefer that format.

All this is SO UNFAIR for all of us who lives outside of the US. We are not allowed to download anything from Amazon, ot music, not films. So what will we do with this sad news if they are true. I really hope that a physical DVDr can be obtain, otherwise Disney have ignored the foreign fans again. They want our money but they dont think about us at all it seems. These services that the US fans have is not available in other countries, except the countries with an own Amazon department. And how many are they...count, my friends and you know what I speak about....

Uhh...I posted this at the time of that release...it's a few posts up...but ideally I don't think Wizards of Waverly Place is the DMC Exclusive people have been waiting for.....

So you did.
Sorry I missed it.

I spoke to an insider at Disney Home Video who told me that the new Dumbo Blu-Ray is indefinitely postponed, and they have no plans to release another Walt Disney Treasure or another Exclusive this year. I re-iterate: no Dumbo, no Treasures, no more Exclusives, in 2010. There has been no discussion within the organization of continuing either series.

If you want the Walt Disney Treasures and Exclusives to continue, either in general or with specific titles, Disney does log the requests. They listen to people who take the trouble to navigate through the message system and who take the time to answer a survey because it means you are probably a customer who spends money. I pressed them to make oop WDT's available to VIP members and to continue both series, although I didn't suggest specific titles. To make your voice heard, call 800-723-4763. Choose option 5, and then follow the prompts to get a person on the phone. The person will not be able to help you get oop titles, but they will be gracious about it. Be nice, but don't restrain your disappointment. After the call, you will be asked to take an electronic survey. Again, be nice, but when the survey asks if you are satisfied with the result, be sure to press unsatisfactory. Pressing unsatisfactory at the end of the survey enables you to leave a personal message. Again, be nice but firm that you want the series to contine or that you want oop titles.

Personally I think they're playing it too cute with the limited editions. A lot of Disney customers didn't even own DVD players when the WDT's started. It is a bit arrogant to deny new customers access to them.

Given that there are no planned treasures or exclusives and that even regular releases are on indefinite hold, I think the writing is on the wall...whether it will be digital downloads or DVDs on Demand, I think we're heading away from physical pressed media. I guess the possibility is also open that DMC will become an online subscription service too though I can't imagine that Disney (or anyone else) is ready to give up the cash that people are still willing to hand over for physical media. Convincing people not to pursue ownership of something they pay for is, I believe, still part of tomorrowland. It didn't work for iTunes. That said...if it were download or nothing, I'd choose download...provided it weren't chyroned to death.

There is much truth in what you say.

Personally, I don't do downloads. Image quality isn't good enough.

Since I've already bought 99.9% of the releases I want (pre-1970, mostly) I only await a few more releases from the classic period and the possibility of Blu-rays. Either I own the physical media or it's no sale.

...and here we go!

http://www.disneymoviesonline.go.com/home

They are so predictable.

That said...there are titles on here that weren't previously available from Disney, such as The Bears and I, The Littlest Outlaw, Sword and the Rose, and The Sign of Zorro.

>>The Bears and I, The Littlest Outlaw, Sword and the Rose, and The Sign of Zorro<<

All of which would be great DVD or DVD on demand titles.

I was realy hoping that The Sword and the Rose and The Sign of Zorro (as well as The Light in the Forest and The Prince and the Pauper) would show up as DMC Exclusives or even as MOD DVD-Rs.

While I am happy to see such great older live-action films as The Sword and the Rose and the Sign of Zorro see the light of day in some form of "release," I am still a sucker for physical media and fear that their downloadable "release" rules out the possibility of them ever being released as DVDs.

...and let's not forget Escapade in Florence, The Horsemasters, Sammy the Way-Out Seal, Johnny Shiloh, Moseby's Marauders/Willie and the Yank... and Song of the South (not that we could)!
