Ponyo On A Cliff (Jp 2008) Discussion & Trailers

we never got ponyo in the cinema here. closest we got was a special screening at armageddon [similar to the comin con, but smaller scale]
i rented it to watch so i could decide whether to make the trip to aramageddon. i loved it so much that i scrapped the trip and bought it instead. i just love the movie... its gorgeous.
ive just watched howls moving castle for the first time and was blown away. needless to say, im a new miyazaki fan. spirited away i dont fully understand, but i love the animation style.
im going to add his other films as i find them.

Ponyo was shown nationwide from 28 or 29 October 2009. SkyCity Cinemas definitely showed it for a number of weeks. Not all cinemas would have had this though, but most cities should have had at least one theatre showing it.

Anyway, glad you liked it, it is a beautiful movie. One of my favourite Studio Ghibli films is the Cat Returns. I can watch that over and over, it's quite charming. If you can find it Whisper of the Heart is the movie that inspired the Cat Returns. These two movies are different, but both are worth watching. Oh and one nice thing to do is to watch the Studio Ghibli movies in order, because they sometimes have gestures towards previous movies, like a name on a clock.

Anyway, have fun with your new found fascination.

PS: JB Hifi has probably got the most complete selection of Studio Ghibli movies (and Anime) if you want to buy them all.

[Disney's Divinity]

To tell you the truth, I could not stop thinking about, "Ponyo." I give that movie the same grade for Disney's, "The Princess and the Frog," infinite A+.

I personally think TP&TF is far and away the better movie. It has good animation and good characters/story, to me.

By the way, I would find it racism to call Hayao Miyazaki a Japanese version of Walt Disney. It may look like the way Disney did it, but he does his movies differently.

Yeah...if you'd read my post, you'd know I said "the level of detail" is something they had in common. I did not say they were the same. Not that that would be 'racism' anyway.

thanks for that hogi bear!! theres a jb going into the mall in palmy, so i will check them out when it opens. i will have a look and make a note of the order of release and then sit and watch them once ive completed the collection methinks im gonna need a third dvd tower soon!

our local cinema sucks the big one, so definately wouldnt have screened ponyo. i wasnt aware that it had been here... dont recall seeing anything on tv.

They had a few ads on TV. Bummer about your cinema though.

I'd probably hire some of the DVDs first before buying them though. I've seen most of the Studio Ghibli films and a few of them didn't appeal to me enough to buy them, though I did like them. Funnily enough though, some of the ones I couldn't hire, I just bought (Whisper of the Heart, Grave of the Fireflies, Kik's Delivery Service). JB Hifi sometimes has specials on those too ($16-$19, usually $25-$30).
