Seen this with a few friends on Saturday. My friend didn't like the look of it but it was his birthday so I dragged him in, he loved it. I thought it was the best animated film I've seen since Cars. I'd be very surprised if Toy Story 3 manages to top this, the first two certainly don't.

Hah wow. You are on a completely different level than most people on the entire planet. No offense meant, but I just find it funny since most people see Cars as just "ehhh..." and most people see the first two Toy Stories as two of the best animated movies of all time. I, for one, don't think HTTYD tops Toy Story, but I think it dominates Cars.

Those of you who are "Cars" haters, need to pull back into your shell. You evidently didn't understand what "Cars" was about and you will probably hate "Cars 2" when it comes out next year. Disney/Pixar movies are in a class of their own and to bad mouth one over the other is pretty dumb. Compare Disney to Disney and DreamWorks to Dreamworks.

Saw "How To Train Your Dragon" for the third time, this time I took my five-year-old grandson and he just loved it, although he found the one scene that makes all the adults jump, very frightening, he still loved it.

I think it was one of the best animated films in many years, compared to the other studios who are trying to compete with Disney/Pixar. I thought the story was top notch, and the voice overs were very well done. I really like this movie a lot and can't wait for the Blu-ray to come available.
The only way to watch movies - Original Aspect Ratio!!!!
I LOVE my Blu-Ray Disc Player!

First of all, I'm not a Cars "hater". I enjoyed the movie. I don't have any idea what "shell" you're talking about, I understand perfectly what Cars was about, and I am actually anticipating the release of Cars 2 with great expectations.

With that said, I don't understand why badmouthing one over the other is dumb. It is a simple fact that some movies are better than others. Just because they are made by Pixar does not mean that they are all on the exact same level and that we shouldn't compare them to each other. You contradicted yourself by saying "Compare Disney to Disney" right after you said "to bad mouth one over the other is pretty dumb".

Also, your argument of "Compare Disney to Disney and Dreamworks to Dreamworks" is utter nonsense. Disney and Dreamworks are two of Hollywood's biggest competitors. The point of competition is to compare the two competitors. And with "How to Train Your Dragon", I feel Dreamworks, for the first time since Shrek, is actually giving Disney/Pixar something to worry about. Like you said yourself, it was one of the best animated films in many years. It doesn't make sense to be upset over someone saying that "one of the best animated films in years" was better than Cars, which was a good, however not spectacular, film.

Stop being such a Disney fanboy and thinking that no other studio can possibly compare.

People need to understand the difference between an opinion and a fact.

I didn't like Cars at all. I totally got the movie, it just was not my cup of tea in the least and I have no plans on seeing the sequel. My daughter isn't much into it, so I doubt she'll force me to see it, so we can spend my money on another movie perhaps that we both may like much more.

To put down someone's opinion on a movie just because they don't like it is trivial, childish, and pointless. You cannot force someone to like a movie just because YOU think its the best thing since sliced bread. I feel Cars is the weakest of Pixar's films. Not a bad film, just a weak one. I also found Mater too annoying to deal with more of him. Pixar has done better than the Doc Hollywood that the movie was. Up for instance, that is by far one of Pixar's BEST films, however, its not my favorite Pixar film. I appreciate Up for its charm and originality. Something very rare these days. I'd say Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc tie for my favorite Pixar films. Bug's Life use to be my least favorite Pixar film, but not because I disliked it at all, it just wasn't one of their best, after Cars, it got one higher number up my list, Cars being at the bottom of my Pixar film list.

If you think I am dumb because of it, I think your ignorant to feel your opinion matters more than someone else. This is a movie discussion we are talking about, not choosing the leader of the free world. An opinion is not going to move a mountain and to take it personally when someone says Cars is a mediocre film, or even sucks, is pretty damn childish. Last Unicorn is my favorite film, and people criticize it all the time, mostly for the animation and voice cast, but I don't fly off the handle and call them "Last Unicorn haters" dumb. Who cares if we are "bad mouthing" Cars? Is Cars your brother or mother that we are slandering by calling it a weak film? Its a movie. Build a bridge. Get over it. Stop attacking people for their opinions, it makes YOU look dumb. "bad mouth", "dumb" these are the words you describe people who don't share your opinion on a fictitious story put onto film...I can't remember how old you said you were before, but the kids here are acting far more mature here about differing opinions. When we talk politics, then defend it to your dying breath. This is a thread about movies, no need to attack people with childish insults.

Anyways back to the SUBJECT....How To Train Your Dragon...Yeah, believe it or not, that's what this thread is about...

Sadly I found out Viacom distributes this film, which is too bad. I wish Dreamworks would sever ties with that blood lust company. I really want to do an all out boycott of Viacom, but its hard when a BETTER studio uses them to distribute their films. Makes me want to bang my head on a wall a few times. But I enjoy HTTYD too much to just boycott Viacom all together.

But onto better things...I made my first HTTYD video. I can't wait for the DVD. Can't afford to see it in the theater again, but I am dying to. :(
The song suits Hiccup so well.

Between this, Avatar and Sky 3D later this year I may invest in a 3DTV once I see them on the high street.

I saw it with my dad Saturday in 3-D...and its the first animated film of any kind in a long long time that my dad said wow it was good...he even said oscar worthy....usually I'm the one saying that.....I do think Toy Story 3 will be nominated for an oscar...but How to train your dragon will take home the prize.....most dreamworks films.....just have too much potty talk...this one...there were a few with Hiccup's Helmet being made out of something but it honestly didn't rely on farting and belching to make the movie interesting......This just proves to me...Chris Saunders may very well be one of the best animator and story creator of all time....I will for sure be picking this up on Blu ray or a blu ray combo pack preferebly.....this movie is worth seeing even if you don't see it in 3D

Well, it's based off of a series of books, so maybe they can pull another adaptation off.

See, this is why DreamWorks shouldn't be allowed to be successful. I mean, in 2001 we raved Shrek, and now in May, we're getting Shrek Forever After. Not to mention Madgascars Escape 2 Africa, Kung Fu Panda 2, 3, 4, and 688, and now How To Train Your Dragon!

I am kidding, I admit, but this pattern is becoming a little distressing. I mean, Disney waited 60 years before they went on their sequel sprees, and Pixar rarely makes sequels...

Oh well, still need to see this movie... Probably a rental, though.

Maybe... but still, I really wish they'd just leave well enough alone. This is a movie that doesn't beg for a sequel.

They gave us Shrek 1 & 2, which were good. Then we got Shrek the Turd, which sucked but made a ton of money. So beating a dead horse isn't enough, remember at Dreamworks it's money that matters, and we're now getting Shrek 4 & 5 (the fifth one primarily featuring Puss in Boots). Did I mention the 4D theme park attraction/section (Universal Singapore), Broadway musical, and TV specials?

So are you still surprised with the How To Train Your Dragon sequel? No?

Well how about Kung FU Panda, probably their first good movie since Shrek. At the first sign of success, they green-lit a sequel (with a trilogy planned) and a Nickelodeon TV show. They aren't satisfied until they kill the franchise.

So are you still surprised with the How To Train Your Dragon sequel? No, really?

Madagascar was, despite being a mediocre movie, very successful and they instantly green-lit the terrible sequel (with a planned trilogy) and made the Nickelodeon spin-off TV series. Did I mention the theme park attractions/section (Universal Singapore), and the TV special?

Heck, this could go on and on with the upcoming Monster vs Aliens Nickelodeon TV series (they were ready for a sequel but the movie didn't earn enough money to warrant that exploitation).

The fact that How To Train Your Dragon is based on a book series just lends itself to future exploitation.

Its all abut money at Dreamworks and exploiting their franchises is the easiest way to get it. This is one of the main reasons they make 2-3 movies a year (even at the cost of quality). Its all about money and a planned sequel being pushed by an executive (as opposed to a filmmaker with an idea warranting production) shouldn't be a surprise by now.

If Chris Sanders stays on board, I look forward to a sequel.

Well I'm certainly not surprised by it... But that doesn't make me any happier about it.
