For crying out load the Animated shorts collections are probably bound to hit Blu-ray, if they decide to move the line to Blu-ray. Because people like me wants to see those animated shorts treated in similar manner too the features that have been released on Blu-ray (Snow White for example). But I would like them to correct all the errors that were originally on the WDT line (Yes there are errors on the DVDs that there were no re-placement disc programs for; also the earliest sets also felt like little rushed so revisiting them would be Ideal; That doesn't mean that I don't want more unreleased materials)The_Iceflash wrote:I'd rather get material we didn't get yet to be released DVD rather than re-issues on BD.yamiiguy wrote: But Blu-Ray is a new format, we're going to need to get old stuff sometime. We need the shorts etc in sweet HD, that's enough for me.
Errors to correct:
1. Proper aspect Ratio display on shorts made pre-1932 (it is not the same aspect ratio as the Academy Ratio (1:37:1) post-1932). In the sets Silly Symphonies, Mickey Mouse in Black and White we actually see cropped version of those shorts and to name an example we see The Skeleton Dance cropped to the Academy Ratio on the Silly Symphonies set while the correct ratio appears on the Oswald set. And that is just one sample of many that can be found on those sets. In too many times).
2. Proper aspect Ratio display on shorts made in the Academy Ratio (I.e make the TV display everything that is on the Disc, since allowing overscan can cause lose of picture information that actually is on the disc; You can usually see more of the picture by watching it on your computer).
3a. Proper aspect Ratio display on shorts made in the Cinemascope Ratio , This goes only for the 2 Humpray Bear shorts and Toot, Wistle, Punk and Boom. They are not wide enough. The Donald shorts however need only to be adjusted so over scan on the TV don't crop so much picture of (you can see much more of the picture by puting the Disc on the TV.
3b. I know that (not an error) all of those shorts were also filmed in Academy Ratio since many theaters couldn't handle the bigger screens so they should consider seriously to put out the Academy Ratio verison out as well to comparison and led animation historian do a side by side comparison.
4. Complete re-mastering on every shorts All none Wartime Donald shorts on vol 2 are bit of lacking in picture quality, Im unsure if other cartoons need better treatment but Blu-ray might actually require that other shorts might need additional re mastering.
5a. Include all surviving Original titles, As advance lover of those shorts I find it disturbing to see majority of those shorts without there original titles, as Disney have often been haled as the studio that take best care of there animated material. If that last statement of Disney is truth then in no why should we have got so many unoriginal titles (in other words they replace what was originally seen when the shorts was released originally to theaters). So they should restore all original titles that still exists. This means Celebrity, Columbia, United Pictures, RKO for example. Get rid of those recreation cards of BW Mickeys they are plan ugly.
5b. Correct the name error on Fiddling Around (wrong name is used on re-issue card on Mickey BW vol 2. Animation Historian David Gerstein posted information of this on his blog and Yes he works with Disney.
5c. Correct Opening music, Three shorts on Cronological Donald vol 3 have incorrect opening musing playing over the titles (When replacing the titles Disney usually kept the original music). Those are Stright Shooters, Crazy with Heat and The Clown of Jungle. Why they fucked up here I don't know. And Its amaze me that nobody asked for replacement disc program on this errors. Im not sure if other sets had similar problem but please let me know if they are.
5c. Correct all sync errors, One short at lest has this error Runaway Brain (1995) according to poster slave2moonlight. I personally don't notices this error on that particular short but that might stem from two possibility Im not native speaker of English thus have harder time to notice the error or the R2 version had this problem corrected.
6. 100% uncensored, This is most important all short should be seen 100& uncensored in the same manners as the moviegoers of the 1920's 1930's 1940's 1950's, 1960's, 1970's, 1980's, 1990's 2000's did no re-release verisons.
The shorts that were actually included censored on WDT were (If more are then please tell me):
Three Little Pigs (Silly Symphony; R2 version is uncensored)
Clock Cleaners (Mickey Mouse; not sure about R2 version)
Bee On Guard (Donald Duck; This error was corrected with replacement program)
7. Other corrections, (not necessarily related to the shorts themselfs
7a. Reorder all shorts on Mickey BW vol 1 and vol 2 in chronological orders. (If you own the sets you see what I mean). and the same goes for the Silly Symhonies sets.
7b. Play all feature to Mickey BW vol 1 and the Complete Goofy (R2 verison still have this problem).
7c. Make Leonard Vault/intro babblings to be skippable. It is enough to hear them once. Even if Leonard is likable. I mean most people that watch those are grown ups and don't need someone too holds there hands when watching those cartoons. Allow the vaulted cartoons to be played inside the main "play all feature"

I agree. As the baby boomers fade away into the sunset, this may be a last window of opportunity to get the rest of Walt's library out to the public before it is completely forgotten by the rights holders.
Besides - - only a few weeks ago at the stockholder's meeting - - didn't Iger cite the "annual collector's sets" as proof that they were servicing the library when asked by a shareholder to release more of the older films on DVD?

If it is still unclear what I would buy if series ever goes Blu-Ray
Possible New Release:
1. Song of the South (plus The Joel Chandler Harris Story, Trailers, promos, TV spots, Soundtrack, outtakes, artwork, etc.)
2. Ludwig Von Drake vol 1-4* (18 episodes of Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color***)
3. Ranger Woodlore and Humphrey Bear (4 hour WWoC shows)
4. Jiminy Cricket (all educational shorts/MMC shorts, plus all 6 Jiminy hosted hour shows)
5. The Magic Mirror (all 6 TV hours hosted by Magic Mirror, including Walt's first two TV specials)
6. Mickey, Donald and Goofy on TV vol 1- (TV hours featuring all the standard characters in original animation bridges)
7. Animated TV material from the anthology series that don't fit elswere (Moby Duck etc..).
8. Rarities 2 (Reaming One-shots theatrical shorts, Leftovers of Donald (1965x2) and Goofy (1965x2 and 2007x1), Chip 'an Dale 3 shorts+the hosted TV hour*****)
9. Rarities 3-4 (Laugh-O-Gram and Alice material)
10. Rarities vol 5* (TV and Theatrical commercials; Wartime shorts, educational shorts)
11. Oswald vol 2 (Depends if the lost cartoons will ever be found).
12. The Fabulous 40's (All the 5 package featurs)
13. The Mouse Factory (Given if there was actually new bridge material, animated, I would take other compilation shows as well if of course there were new bridge material on those episodes as well if not then I would like to see the openings and closing as bonuses).
Notes:
No. 2-7, 8-9, 12-13: Im not 100% sure how many sets it would take to release everything.
No 2-7: They might and might not order those sets differently than we have already discussed.
No. 6-7: They Might and Might not want too fit Leftovers of Donald (1965x2) and Goofy (1965x2 and 2007x1) with the Donald Mickey and Goofy TV material instead of putting them on Rarities set.
NO 7:I see no reason for them to re-release the Donald vs Chp´n Dale material on there own with the None-DOnald vs Chip an' Dale materal since they couldn't figure out to put the none-Donald vs Chip and Dale material on the Donald vol 4 as bonus; They did instead what nobody asked for the put the MouseWorks/House of Mouse shorts on as Bonus; I would have liked to see MouseWork/House of Mouse material released on there own and not inside WDT line)
No 11. They might also/instead want to do complete Oswald Collection ((total of 26) if the lost cartoons will ever be found (total number of lost cartoons are 13).
No. 12: If the can't get the package features right (100% uncut) on standard release then I see no other way than include them on the Treasury line.
Possible Re-Relaes:
(with all the errors corrected I listed in my last post):
Wave 1:
Mickey Mouse in Living Color, vol 1
Silly Symphonies
Wave 2:
Complete Goofy
Mickey Mouse in Black and White, vol 1
Behind the Scenes at the Walt Disney Studios

i just want the unreleased animated shorts. it's okay if some of the past sets have censored or reissue prints of the shorts. i can still enjoy them anyway, besides i really don't care about original title or such things, it's the short itself i like. don't know what the big deal is. we should be happy with what we do get. they did do a great job on these sets.

There is a lot of classic Walt Disney Productions original animation outside of the shorts still unreleased, including almost all of the material done for the anthology series. These things are important to the Walt Disney story and could easily be lost to time.
Yes, they did a great job on the previous sets and should continue documenting this body of work until their very important job is done.

Those Von Drake TV shows that everyone are crying and begging Disney to release are mostly clip shows edited from the shorts. So in theory most sets would actually be double dip.The_Iceflash wrote:merlinjones wrote:>>I would not like that for the simple reason that it would most likely mean that we would get stuff we already have. Given opportunity to take old sets re-released in HD on blu-ray with all corrections that need to be made that I pointed out or pointless clip shows. I think my choose would be easy, I would take the former.
Another unrelated question what did you ether buy Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies or Bugs Bunny show (the show is mostly a pointless clip show of the former)? Soon as Warner starts to release Looney Tunes on Blu-ray they will be asked to re-release Looney Tunes shorts that are on the Golden Collection too Blu-ray. So why shouldn't Disney be any different wen it comes to its animated shorts?. The most important factor that Studio exist in first place.

There is a lot of new animated material in these TV hour shows and often an entirely different context with Paul Frees narrating - - these shows are worthy of seeing separately from the shorts - - and the "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" hour shows often make for a better viewing experience than chronological compilations. Also - - the VonDrake and Ranger shows are all in color.
Why not have it all?
And for the record, I'd rather have "The Bugs Bunny Show" in addition to "Looney Tunes" shorts compilations for the same reasons. The original animation done for the shows was great.
Why would you begrudge the shows to people who want them - - no one is forcing you to buy - - but unless they are made available we can't get 'em.

DVD is a very very good archival format. That's why. Also since BD players are backwards compatible to DVDs it wouldn't be like releasing them on VHS. Besides, the Walt Disney Treasures are too good a collection to completely disregard and diminish due to the existence of a new format.yamiiguy wrote:But what's the point in releasing them on a format that in a few years will be 'old'? Why not have both? - - and there is no current proof that Blu-Ray will be a lasting format either.
If the unreleased Walt Disney era programs aren't released in some form soon, they may be lost to time - - and their unavailability will be be cited and perpetuated to the next format.
Proof of history: After all, several volumes of "Wonderful World of Disney" shows and many Walt era features and TV features were released on VHS, but 20 years later, have still not made it to DVD, let alone Blu-Ray.
Get 'em while you can. Another 20 years is too long to wait (especially at my age).

i agree, what i meant was that i don't know what the big deal is about getting original title cards. but as far as the unreleased shorts i think they are very important and i really want them to be released

This is about preservation and not including original titles is not good way to preserve things as they were originally made.jlppr wrote:i just want the unreleased animated shorts. it's okay if some of the past sets have censored or reissue prints of the shorts. i can still enjoy them anyway, besides i really don't care about original title or such things, it's the short itself i like. don't know what the big deal is. we should be happy with what we do get. they did do a great job on these sets.
Tell me what is more valuable original print or reissue print?
When I started to pick into those errors on WDT i came evidence to me that Disney could have done lot of better job than they actually did given if the have all the source material to do so.
Short actually start when the opening titles comes up and ends when the closing titles comes by. So changing those titles are actually change to short it self even if the body of the short is intact.
Some review I have found on the web have called those just an another way of censorship things and accused Disney of false advertisement.
Only reason why people are not as were of re-issue titles on Disney shorts is because they are mostly identical too the original card than Warner's Looney Tunes Merrie Melodies have re-issue titles that are piss easy to spot the Blue-Ribbons. First time I saw Blue Ribbon short I knew soon enough that there were something seriously wrong with that short, and I knew I was not seeing what I should be seeing i.e the credits and beautiful card were the name of the short is displayed.
Warner have try to do there best on restoring original titles and actually are winning in that race with Disney. So if Disney have the actually original titles on those shorts then there is no excuse to not include the original titles. recognized
If Disney actually have there original titles all over the place as I do believe until more recognized information come by and say other wise until then I will give Disney an big fat F in that department. Even if other parts of the presentation is quite good.

Who was saying that the line should be scraped. The series should be moved to Blu-ray when the DVD case to exist as new release format. I can see it Walt Disney Treasures on Blu-ray for limit time only Wave 1?
"3 or 4 brad new sets" for limited time only x number of tins made.
Small reminder what is the most important factor that the studio exist:
a) Snow White released 14 years after studio was reorganized in Hollywood.
b) The animated shorts released from the begining and no it didn't start with a Mouse; it started in Kansas.
c) Treasure Island relsesed 27 years after studio was reorganized in Hollywood.
d) The Anthology TV series originally broadcast 31 years after studio was reorganized in Hollywood.

I was not sure for many years if I was seeing original titles or not and couldn't tell if I was seeing orginals or not couldn't even careless as you do. But threads over at goldenagecartoons.com sprakkled my interest in this matter. http://forums.goldenagecartoons.com/sho ... ney+titles But the op in that thread never finished his task so the only half of the story was told there. But the thread is very helpful of those matter.jlppr wrote:how can you tell which ones are reprints? i'm seriously asking, not trying to argue. i could never tell with the disney shorts. as for the looney tunes, like you said, are more obvious. ie the blue ribbon issues.
Those following threads are can be related too the erlier threads
This threads explain what is going on with the black and white Mickey Mouse http://forums.goldenagecartoons.com/sho ... hp?t=13834
conclusion of this thread recreated cards with disappointed results, i.e lacking information on distributor Columbia (left of in first BW set) United Pictures (left of in both sets). Feel to them.
This thread explain what is going on with the Band Concert first regular Color Mickey short. http://forums.goldenagecartoons.com/sho ... hp?t=14472
This threads explain in few word early Pluto cards but is not all that informative http://forums.goldenagecartoons.com/sho ... hp?t=13469
Too make long story shorts on original titles you should be seeing the distributor references on them expect of course those recreated Mickey cards.
On Laugh-O-Grams, Alice and Oswald shorts I dont have any knowledge what is and what is not orginal but distributors on those were Leslie B. Mace, Winkler Pictures, Universal. Since majority of those are probably lost to history I guss that ether the shorts exist in full with its original titles intact or the shorts is lost along with its titles.
from 1928-1929 Celebirty Pictures (Silly Symphonies are explained here on the replacement program of More Silly Symhonies , Mickey cards are very similar to those of Silly but im unsure when celebrity deal broke of in favor of Columbia)
from 1930-1932 Columbia Pictures (explained in the second thread on Mickey Mouse shorts; Silly Symphonies are explained; Silly Symphonies are enplaned here on the replacement program of More Silly Symhonies those might also be recreations but I have no clear evidence if that is the case when we come to the replacement disc of more Silly Symhonies)
from 1932-1937 United Artists Pictures (BW shorts explained in the second thread on Mickey Mouse shorts; Silly Symphonies are enplaned
those might also be recreations but I have no clear evidence if that is the case when we come to the replacement disc of more Silly Symhonies), Color shorts should have had gray titles with the series is name and title card with the name it might and might not have carried a beautiful art with the name of the shorts some believe that Don Donald for example carried beautiful art of Daisy Duckhttp://home.mira.net/~kirseval/mss/ wrote:here on the replacement program of More Silly Symhonies
from 1937-1953* RKO Radio Pictures (On the sets Goofy and Donald vol 1 there references to Buena Vista at the start of them thus piss easy to spot. Other ways too spots reissues are the sunbeam logo (character is heads those titles were identical from short to short with expectations of cheater cartoon like How to Play football it had originally very different opening (it reflected a scoreboard) from what we should expect. Smaller heads sunbeams were not designed until very late 1940's early 1950s. all earlier shorts with those smaller sunbeams are therefore reissues. Other ways are to watch out for RKO references, MPAA logos, credits (after 1944; im not all that not on this credit thing though) and other fine prints. I watched out for RKO references and in why too many times there were no references to RKO thus made me assume the titles I was seeing were not original one which have turned out to be the case. On the title card (were the actually name of the shorts appears) it is unconfirmed but I personally think that only one short got its original art replaced is Mickey's Symphony it has on wdt an alternate title card set against a background of notes, whereas the original version had the title card set against a background of a silouette of Mickey conducting (see IMDB).
from 1955*-present Buena Vista/Walt Disney Pictures (I think we are seeing almost everything with its original titles on those shorts, I haven't had all that much time to proberly check those to confirm
*Some Donald scope cartoons of the 50's might have had RKO distribution deal on the Academy Ratio (1:37:1) version of those cartoons as the cartoons were actually filmed both ways. But strange thing is that some scope ratios have RKO references
Reasons way those original titles are important.
1. Its carries the correct name of the title. Thus we are sitting with wrong name of one shorts at least Just Mickey/Fiddling Around as that errors happended when wrong name was used when reissued. (can name more example from Warner Bros if you like in comparison)
2. Its carried beautiful artists on the sunbeams logos and on the main title logos (were the name of the shorts appear) You are not going to see that art elswere if replaced or removed.
3. They are more life like when the replacement titles are usually more duller and boring, thus original animation on titles gets lost if replaced.
A side note all most all titles original or not carries the original opening music expect for Stright Shooters, Crazy with Heat and Clown of Jungle (there is also notable fuck up in the shound when short is played in WDT disc). Those orginal music can befound on Youtube why Disney made those replacement made me scratch my head since there were no reasons to do that.

Hum, there is no reasons to re buy shorts that were over exopsed on show like this, without there proper theatrical display. But the show it self (Bugs Bunny show) is very fit to be cut down to only the original bridges.merlinjones wrote:>>Those Von Drake TV shows that everyone are crying and begging Disney to release are mostly clip shows edited from the shorts.<<
