Which has the most to lose?

Post by BK »

I have just started to collect some of the Disney DVDs but was wondering, that if BR is going to be the future for all releases (not just Platinums), how many of them will or could foreseeably improve from what they have now?

Disney likes to screw us over and even Pixar releases whilst trying to keep everything drop a few here and there. I think only once has Disney managed to keep everything of worth from one release to the next (Peter Pan SE to PE) but that release had a worthless feature length read along too.

So basically I'll list what I'm thinking of getting and if you could give your input it'd be nice.

1) Fantasia Anthology->Main concern being the Legacy disc
2) Aladdin -> From what I gather the 2nd best Platinum
3) Tarzan -> My default fave DAC after TLK showing turned out disappointing
4) Emperor's New Groove
5) Atlantis -> From what I gather best non-Platinum?
6) Pocahontas -> The DVD still has missing elements from LD
7) Mulan
8) Dinosaur
9) Brother Bear
0) Treasure Planet
1) Winnie the Pooh
2) Alice in Wonderland -> Loads of LD missing features
3) Lilo & Stitch

I think those are the only ones worth getting since the rest have been shortchanged majorly. Most of those have only had 1 release with Tarzan and TENG getting terrible updates. So is it likely all the features will make it to BR (and the combo) and if it's most likely they don't, which of these are must-gets assuming I like all of them?

Thanks (I don't want to double dip if I can help it)

Also, I got 101 Dalmatians, how does that compare to Peter Pan, Bambi, Lady and the Tramp, Little Mermaid, Cinderella, Jungle Book & Pinocchio?

Based on all the stuff that got dropped from Snow White (even on BD) I wouldn't be surprised to see similar things happen with the other Diamonds. Even the Sleeping Beauty Platinum (in both formats) is missing some supliments from the original 2-disc DVD. So, I, personally, am glad to have all the Platinums in my collection, and in the case of SB, glad to have both editions (one of the few times I've ever "double dipped"!)

You just never know with Disney though. Sometimes, almost everything of importance gets carried over; sometimes not. There doesn't appear to be any logic or consistency to these things. ;) Look at how they totally fumbled the Bedknobs re-release last year, losing SO much substance from the original; yet Pete's Dragon, which was reissued around the same time, was generally considered an upgrade.

Thanks at least someone replied.

I meant how does it compare to other Platinums since I have none and really words on a review doesn't really compare each to each.

The thing is to ask yourself what is more important - the picture quality of the film or the bonus features. All of them will improve in the former respect, the latter remains to be seen.

I am talking about special features.

Does anybody know of a different forum for Disney movies?

This forum is incredibly unhelpful. Most people own those 13 movies I listed yet no one gives a damn. Stop referring me to those damn reviews, that's just one person's opinion.

Seriously, people come here everyday or something just to post inconsequential nonsense about Fantasia/BATB/slipcovers and god knows what else and they don't bother helping someone else out. There's absolutely no news out either but whatever.

1) Fantasia Anthology - I'd wait, Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 are out soon and once they are then you can decide what release to get, the Anthology will probably be cheaper then.
2) Aladdin - I'd get this now, it's been dropped from the Platinum/Diamond line so the chances of it getting stellar treatment are slim imo.
8 ) Dinosaur - Already out on Blu-Ray

I referred you to the reviews because you were asking about bonus features and the reviews give a thorough breakdown of the bonus features, much more so than most DVD review sites. AnimatedViews also has really good reviews of the bonus features.

As far as our opinion about which bonus features will get retained or dropped, the truth of the matter is that no one really knows. My point was Disney is very inconsistent with this, so your guess is as good as anyone's here. My rule of thumb is if they release a really nice 2-disc set, there's a good chance that not everything on it will be on the next edition. But even then, the new Alice appears to be retaining everything except maybe the 2 sing-alongs, so as I said, you can never tell with Disney. We can't predict the future and can't read Disney's mind! You seem kind of upset, but I WAS trying to be helpful.

Since you just posted this earlier today, and you've gotten 4 responses, I'd say that's pretty good. Not all of us can be on this site during the day, we have jobs, school, etc. Our lives don't revolve around answering your questions the second you ask them.

And if I want to post 'inconsequential nonsense' about Fantasia/BATB/slipcovers, then I will do just that.

My honest opinion....... I think you should definetly get

Tarzan original 2 disc edition
E.N.G original 2 disc edition
Atlantis original 2 disc edition
Lilo and Stich 2 disc edition

They all have unbelievable wealth of knowledge, 2hrs + of special features, which I really don't think will see the light of day on any Blu Ray.

I think the main Blu Ray editions that will recieve good attention will be the Diamonds, so I think the Fantasia's will be a better deal when put on Blu, however the Legacy disc is really good.

You might want to check out www.secondspin.com for these titles, as they are no longer available (except maybe Lilo and Stitch). I picked up Tarzan and Toy Story Toy Box from them last year, for this exact same reason, and they were about $20 each for pristine condition.

I hope that helps, one persons opinion!!!

Take care Greg.

My two biggest concerns, as the extras a definitive. I'd be really disappointed if they lost their extras. While I'm excited for Fantasia World, and the prospect of getting the Fantasia 2006 shorts, I'd really like to have ALL the Fantasia Legacy extras (I must be greedy). I'm really hoping that the Aladdin Blu-ray NOT being a Diamond Edition will help. Hopefully that will help them resist any urges to make new extras (not that I'm against it) and just port over the current set (the near-2 hour doc was fantastic and is why its one of the only Platinums I own).

Same with these ones. Hopefully their Blu-ray releases NOT being Diamond Editions will help with the chances of their extras being ported over. How hard would these Blu-rays be, with them being CAPS (no restoration required), and having an excellent lineup of extras already?

Thanks to everyone except Scar for their input.
:)

Good to know there are some helpful people out there.

Is secondspin better than ebay then?

I mean, there are some worthwhile sellers, especially this side of the Atlantic.

I recently purchased the Ultimate Toy Box, not pristine as I would like, some minor marks and scratches on discs 1/2 but great supplemental features disc.

I know they have like 9 copies of Tarzan which I want to get.

I guess I'll try to get the above, I have been looking for and skip the others.

I find secondspin very good. I prefer it over ebay, as its just like an online store, and are very easy to deal with. I live in Australia, and have had some problems with ebay over the years. secondspin have always been helpful, and every week they have some kind of discount on offer, and the product is always clean, with no scratches. I have sometimes recieved brand new stock.

I know they have some copies of the titles I mentioned at really good prices, so you should give them a go, if you're not happy, I'm sure they would offer another copy. Just remember it is second hand, so the packaging may not be like new, however I have always been happy with the condition.

Hope that helps, Greg.
