Just curious...Spending habits question

Post by Loomis »

I was just wondering this about other board members, because I was wondering it about myself this morning:

Do you buy certain DVDs because you really want them, or because you think you should. Specifically, would you buy a Disney DVD that you may not have considered buying were it not for the fact it is Disney? (Because I get the feeling some of you do...YOU know who you all are )

My answer to the above was "Yes", so I immediately went about cancelling those DVD orders that I wouldn't have considered buying were they not Disney (August titles mainly).

Sure, there are some DVDs I have been MADE AWARE of because of being a Disney fan, and I'm glad I did consider them. But where do most of you draw the line (if at all)?

Just curious really :P

I tend to buy and DVD that interests me, and I'll quite happily make a "blind buy" (something most people seem to be against) because it's just to expensive for us to go to the cinema to see films. Too be honest buying a DVD may be slightly more expensive (but only slightly) but I always work on the assumption that I can sell unwanted DVDs later and get some of the money back. But in practice I've only sold a few DVDs - the number can be counted on the fingers of both hands.

There are a few Disney DVDs that I have bought that I otherwise wouldn't (such as the two Kim Possible DVDs) but I only got them as they were cheap. I get very few Disney live-action films.

We won't mention my International Disney DVD duplicates. At least I've vowed not to buy a Lion King Trilogy - I have enough Lion King DVDs all ready! (And I think its a pretty poor disc as regards to the supplements! :o ) Still, to repeat my catchphrase "It's better than collecting Disney Snow Globes". If I tell myself that enough times, I may think it's true!

As for the question of buying DVDs because I think I should - well, yes, I do. While I know Schindler's List is an exceptional film, I don't really see myself watching it that many times. But I have this strange collecting obsession so not only do I want it, I want "the best version available" so I've got the gift set on order. But the vast majority of the films I buy are for content I want to see (even if sometimes it takes me about 4 months to finally see it).

Hey Loomis! I draw the line on my Disney releases if they are Foolscreen and not OAR, if they catalog tittles that have been stuck on dvd without any Digital Remastering, Winnie the pooh stuff, cheapquels, releases that are there for the quick buck. I buy animated features, live action in OAR, TV Show, some DTVs, collectible releases.

as for non-Disney releases if it's two disc and comes in a cool case and lots of extra goodies is a sure buy for me even if i havent seen the movie and Loomis can tell you! I convinced him into getting the E.T. Collector's Box set which he know enjoys and the Seabiscuit Collector's Box set which he also adores! and soon to be added to his collection will be Master & Commander C.E. hehe :D

and same as Netty I to am a collector and I will purchase the bestest edition available no matter now much $$$$ is involved! if it's available it's mine! hehe I didnt get the SChindler's list box set because it was a rip off and it didnt have anything the one disc didnt have plus the "glass" plastic rip off case had a lot of manufactoring problems with breaking apart! but I pretty much own alot of boxed sets of movies or it's 2 disc deluxe sets if its a movie i want to own.

Exactly, therein lies the problem. I've bought both of those versions despite cheaper versions being available simply because I thought I HAD to have the better copy. Mind you, that is with everything with me - I have to buy the best version available.

And as Netty says, something just compels you to buy a DVD you probably won't watch more than once in 10 years (e.g. the excellent example of Schindler's List), but I KNOW I will buy it at some stage...

I think Showgirls: V.I.P Edition is at the heart of my dilemma :D I dn't need it, I'm not even sure I want it - but I MUST OWN IT !!

Anyways, I have the answers from two people who I already knew the answer too (sorry guys, you are worthwhile, but I know your dirty little habits :P)

I sometimes buy DVD's because I've been made aware they're Disney titles. But I like a lot of different genres, so it's very rare I've been disappointed. Most of my purchases are blind buys, and that's half the fun of it. In average, I think I buy appr. 1-1.5 DVD's a day.

:P It was meant as an average. If you e.g. take 10 DVDs a week, you'll get an average of 1.42.

In other words -- when does it stop being a hobby and become an illness?

Most of my buys seem to be for movies or shows that I remember fondly from childhood. I haven't bought the "Fireball XL-5" set yet, but I am gratly considering it. "Supercar" to a lesser extent. I'll probably buy the first seasons of Johnny Quest and the Flintstones, but not the later ones.

I also have that "completist" obsession that so many collectors have. I want ALL the Disney Treasures. The question is, do I want ALL the Disney animated features? even the ones I didn't like very much e.g. The Rescuers? Robin Hood? The collector in me says BUY, but the practical side which knows I won't watch them more than once says STOP.

I am a collector of a lot of things. I think it is more of an obsession. I don't necessarily buy a title because it is Disney (except for the animated titles, whether I really like them or will only watch them once in a while). I buy what I like, but I do buy good bargains and a lot of collector's and box sets because I want them. Although they are harder to store in conventional DVD storage devices.

I don't know if it is better than the snowglobes though, I collect them too:)

Maybe I spend too much on collections? But I enjoy them and enjoy displaying them for others to see when they are visiting. maybe we should start a DVDA thread for addicts :P

Blind Buys are very rare for me, but I will do it if many are highly recommending a film dealing with a suject that is very intersting to me. As for my Disney tendencies, I have bought a few of the Animated Classics just because I wanted them for our collection, even though I personally do not like them much. Luckily my daughter has loved every one of them.

I just usually buy Disney DVD titles that are classic or cheapsequels for example this year I'm going to get Aladdin a classic film and cheapsequel I got was The Lion King 1 1/2 that was a blind buy for me.
I rarely get any other DVD's movies.
For example I got X-Men, Spider-man, Indiana Jones, Bruce Almighty.etc.
Movies that I think that are good because of how much money they made in the box office.
I buy at least 3 DVD per month depends on if any Disney titles I like come out that month.
I usually just rent movies or see them on televison or cable.
I don't like to spend that much. :D

The two main things for me is how good the extras are and if I'm really interested in the movie. Also the price is important.

I'm not a huge fan of 'Sleeping Beauty,' but I bought it because it was going OOP. I guess Disney's tactics do work...

And you find that to be a good criterion?

Some real clunkers have made lots of money at the box office.

I only buy the movies that come out in the threatre that I like and know will be good because I see it or a friend has seen it.
I'm not saying I buy all the top making movies I just buy the ones I like from the preview.
For example
Fox : X-Men and Daredevil.
Disney: Finding Nemo and Brother Bear
Sony: Spider-Man and Men in Black
Fox: Cheaper by the Dozen
Warner Brothers: The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolution

I just buy the ones I enjoy to see over and over again.

I usually buy DVDs because I want them. Sometimes I will do the occaisional blind buy though. Blind buys aren't all that bad, I don't know why most people are against them.
