First Disney movie I saw? Impossible to recollect, considering my parents owned every Disney VHS available and I watched them every day. I remember liking Aladdin the most but my Dad tells me I wore out our Beauty and the Beast VHS and he had to get a new one.
I actually remember seeing Pocahontas in theaters, as I saw it at a girlfriend's birthday party and I remember seeing Toy Story in theaters, but none of the ones before them (my Dad claims we LOVED Aladdin in theaters and so did he). I'm honestly surprised that some people here are young enough to have had Tarzan as their first.

For animated movies...
In the theater, during one of its early 80s rereleases, The Jungle Book. This was actually the very first movie I saw in a theater as a kid. I think I was 4. I still remember which theater. It was the small one by the Empress Hotel in Victoria. It closed down about 8 years ago I believe. The last movie I saw there was The Full Monty.
The first run Disney movie I saw in a theater was The Black Cauldron. This one I also saw in Victoria, but at the Capital 6.
As for live action. I cannot remember.

My first Disney "movie" is one I actually haven't been able to find a record of. One of the local theaters back home had some kind of showing of Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts in honor of his 50th birthday (I was two, you do the math).
Anyway, I don't remember a thing about it, but my mom told me there was a lady (not even a guy) walking around in the lobby wearing what she called "a really cheesy Micky costume," and I cried when we we left the lobby for the theater. To heck with the cartoons, I apparently preferred the "real" Mickey.
The first actual movie I do remember seeing was Grease and it was at a drive-in. I had to stand in the front seat of the car to see, as I was also only two at that point. But that's not exactly a Disney movie, so . . .
I know I saw both Sleeping Beauty and The Jungle Book in the theater when I was pretty little. While I saw Sleeping Beauty in a regular theater, The Jungle Book was actually projected in the auditorium of our high school . . . back then they'd have free showings of Disney movies every so often on the weekends. I was probably about 4 or 5 when they stopped that, but damn . . . it would have been so awesome if they kept that up, our town was little and hadn't had a theater since the late 1940's (when the showing of Forever Amber closed it down).
I also know I saw Snow White, The Fox and the Hound, The Great Mouse Detective, Lady and the Tramp, Song of the South, Cinderella, 101 Dalmatians, and every DAC theatrical release since (and including) The Little Mermaid with the exceptions of Brother Bear, Meet the Robinsons, and the re-release of Oliver & Co. in the theater (missed out the initial release of Oliver as well).
It was awesome when they re-released The Little Mermaid in the late 90's, even though I'd seen the movie a million times at that point it was awesome to see it in the theater again . . . and I can say the same for the later IMAX releases of Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, even if they were "special editions."
I wish they'd still regularly put the older films back in the theaters again like they used to, but it's considered "old-fashioned" and possibly counter-productive since we get home video releases now.

my first movie in the cinema ever was, i think, babar, lol. i was so excited i walked into a pole. lmfao. that would have been 88 maybe?
i think little mermaid would have been my first disney cinema experience... i would have been 4. my parents used to take us on their anniversaries. i saw beauty and the beast the same way.
i cant remember what disney movie i would have seen before that on video... growing up it seemed like we had always had them. i do distinctly remember buying our first vcr though. it was raining and it got to ride in my buggy with the rain cover, while i walked. lmfao. that thing only conked out a couple of years ago, and i replaced it with a dvd/vcr combo for my parents.

So you are about 11 years old? "You'll be in my heart" is a good song to sing to your kid. I also remember Phill Collins' performing this song on Oscar night (back in the good old days when this event was still broadcasted by the BBCzackiellovedisney wrote:Tarzan
I just saw it when I was a little baby probably not even 1 yet. Back then I still loved movies. Anyway I don't remember it but I know because I remember my mom singing "You'll be in My Heart" when I was little

The first Disney movie I remember seeing in theaters is The Journey of Natty Gann (1985). One of the only memories I have of being with my father, who passed away when I was only 9.
I didn't go to movie theaters often when I was young, so the only other one I really remember is The Lion King when I was 15 with my sister on vacation down in Texas.
After seeing that, I begged my mom for all VHS copies of all animated Disney movies and I've been a Disney basketcase ever since.

I don't which Disney movie I saw first in theaters, but for home video it might have been The Little Mermaid. My parents usually found me swinging on our swing set (my favorite) and belting out "Part of Your World" at the top of my lungs.
I also remember going to the store and buying The Black Cauldron. I have no idea why my parents let us watch this when Hercules and Hunchback were banned from the house. I was terrified of this movie. My little brother watches this movie now and isn't scared. Of course he saw Pirates of the Caribbean first.
Another gret memory I have is getting Mulan. My parents hid the VHS in the house and we had to go find it with only "hot and cold" for help. I remember finding it in our Lego toy chest and I was so happy 'cause at this point Mulan was my favorite character.
I still have all of these vids on VHS. They still work well after about 15 years.

Just imagine: when I was a kid videos were unknown. I saw all Disney films in the cinema. Anyway, the first Disney videos I got were Fantasia and Cinderella.

I still feel like 1999 was last year. Seriously.
But they still did theatrical re-releases in the 1990's, when all the films were out on VHS. I would also like to see some of the Classics on the big screen! There's just something special about a Disney film on the big screen...enigmawing wrote:I wish they'd still regularly put the older films back in the theaters again like they used to, but it's considered "old-fashioned" and possibly counter-productive since we get home video releases now.
My first Disney movie at home? I couldn't say. We had a very nice uncle who copied all his daughter's Disney video's for us. So we owned almost every Disney DAC. If I had to guess, I would say Robin Hood, just because that one is totally worn out. We watched it all the time.
In theaters, the first film was Duck Tales, the movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp. I must have been 5 years old. I distinctly remember my dad taken me to see it in another city (didn't play in my home town). I can't remember having seen any Duck Tales on tv prior to that.

You've got that right! I saw the Toy Story 1 & 2 combo movie last year on the big screen. Feels just like yesterday I saw TS2, but it's been 10 years! We won a poster on opening night and it's still tacked to the wall downstairs.Goliath wrote:There's just something special about a Disney film on the big screen...

Ok, this post got my brain going. The first live action Disney movie I saw was The Journey of Natty Gann. When I saw it (I think I was 6), I never realized back then that in the future I'd get to work on both steam locomotives that were used in the movie.kbehm29 wrote:The first Disney movie I remember seeing in theaters is The Journey of Natty Gann (1985).
Around the same time I was also lucky enough to see Song of the South on the big screen. I think that one was re-released to theaters in '86.
I can also remember clearly my first Disney DVD, I remember it because they I got it (and the day it was released), just happened to be Halloween. It was The Lion King and I remember going to Sainsbury's for some Halloween sweets and when I seen it (I was 7 at the time), all Halloween plans were out of the window and anybody who knocked at the door were not answered, I was too busy watching it.

Though I'm not particularly sure, I think that the first Disney film I saw in theaters was Aladdin. Though I wouldn't have even been 1 yet, I have some feeling that it was the first film I saw in theaters. My first Disney DVD was The Lion King, too! And just for laughs, my family's first DVD was You've Got Mail, which I think I watched once (plus I'm not exactly sure where it is).

Actually, I've only been able to count 3 DAC's that were re-released in the 1990's that had previously been available on VHS: Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty, and The Little Mermaid (I'm only counting wide releases, not film festivals and the like). The Jungle Book, Fantasia, 101 Dalmatians, The Great Mouse Detective, Snow White, and Oliver & Company were all theatrically released in the 90's as well, but none of those titles had been released on VHS yet at that point (I'm going by US releases here, I'm unsure when it comes to other countries). It seems that once a DAC gets released on home video, it's not very likely to ever hit the theaters again.Goliath wrote:But they still did theatrical re-releases in the 1990's, when all the films were out on VHS. But yes, there's something special about seeing them on the big screen!
