The Wonderful World of Disney Signature Movie Edition
Any word on when the second title ships?
I'm interested in the program, but I'm not going to jump in at 20 bucks a pop if they're simply going to reissue the exact same discs that have already been collecting dust on shelves for the last few years. Swiss Family Robinson was a great first title, but since the original 2-disc was already pretty comprehensive, they could get away with a straight reissue. I figure the second title will really tell the tale.

Disney Signature Movie Edition
No clue yet as to title #2. Should be another 2-3 weeks, so I'll post when it arrives.

Title #2 is The Apple Dumpling Gang
Title #2 arrived at my house today in the same packaging as "Swiss Family Robinson" did last month. It's "The Apple Dumpling Gang." Not as excited about that one because I love the Walt era classics more.
The tin is very nice; as noted earlier, these tins are hinged on the left with the series' name and the film's title printed on the left - nicely convenient for being able to tell the title. With the Treasures tins, I stack them and then can't tell which is which, other than the ones at the top.
The same "Wonderful World of Disney" booklet with the show's history and user agreement came with it again. Not sure what the point of that is if you're already subscribing to the series.
The little poster card reprints the 1975 one-sheet poster art.
The disc was inside the little booklet that has a few pages of text about the making of the film, with quotes from Susan Clark, Tim Conway and the late Bill Bixby.
Here's the very bad news, and I'll have to call the toll-free number --- the DVD disc is for "The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again" !!!
To me, that's an inexcusable mistake, especially if they're trying to launch this new line, however inconspicuously or quietly! I hope they will replace it with the correct disc, even though from the booklet's bonus feature listings, it appears to be the exact same content as "The Apple Dumpling Gang" special edition disc. This would match how they double-dipped on the "Swiss" release.
If you're a collector like me who is sucker for the different releases, I suppose you might like to have this (with the correct DVD disc, of course). There's one side of my brain wondering if Disney deliberately messed up to see if the audience for these could know the difference been the first and second Apple Dumpling films!
Waiting to see what they do in terms of bonus features for some of the films that didn't have them, i.e., "Big Red." If I start getting barebones discs for those, I may cancel the subscription, but the other side of me is waiting to see when we get something released this way that has NOT been released before, i.e., "The Horsemasters," etc.
So, diehard Disney fans are suckers, probably, but Joe Public who half pays attention and doesn't know when Disney releases what might enjoy owning it in this tin, this way, provided the right movie is included, of course.

pics of the Swiss Family Robinson release
My partner inadvertently removed the images from his business photo folder on Picasa, so I just noticed that my previous post's image links have expired.
Here's a link to the images that I just re-uploaded:

My apologies if anyone tries to see the older links earlier in the thread.

Well that's very disappointing as it sounds like I'd be paying 20 bucks for a tin. I already have most of the live action releases and can get the remaining ones for a lot less than that price since it looks like they are simply repackaging old discs. About the only consolation here is that so far, they are sticking to releases that have special features and were actually in the proper aspect ratio. I guess it'll be more interesting to see what happens when they get to something like Boatniks, which has a real piece of crap as it's current release.
I wonder if they'll just issue Apple Dumpling Gang Returns as the next release and tell you to simply swap the discs?

First of all, thanks for all the information about this program. Having just discovered the whole thread I couldn't wait to make the phone call. It doesn't matter to me that I already own the movies, I want these releases.
You can imagine my disappointment when I learned that I have to wait until Monday to start this subscription because the order lines are closed right now. You have to call between 9:30 am and 6:30 pm central time.
This is extremely good news to me. It at least shows that Disney hasn't totally abandoned this sort of thing and they are exploring different venues to make classic titles available.
Last year we canceled our satellite subscription because we just don't watch TV anymore. We had it solely for the D****Y Channel and when they put Disney back on it, I'll start typing the rest of the letter and start up the satellite again. After 9 years of waiting for some semblance of vintage Disney we gave up. With a wall full of Disney movies DVD's, lasers and VHS, it seemed foolish to pay for something we weren't using since our evening were spent watching real Disney, even if that sometimes means the old worn videos we fortunately taped from Vault Disney.
We never would have seen the commercial without access to TV Land so I have a whole lot of thanks to extend to the original poster for sharing this info and for all the discussion that followed.
I'm hoping the subscription program catches on. I know we all want the unreleased titles but unfortunately, if we don't support this sort of thing, we probably aren't going to see them. There must be some interest in them though since the DMC exclusives line keeps expanding!
Monday is two days away, right now that seems like an incredibly long time!

Just an added thought about this approach to selling these titles.
In 1979 the Disneyland Records label was facing extinction. Their latest release, Mickey Mouse Disco, wasn't selling as expected and they turned to telemarketing to try and boost the sales. Using cleverly edited vintage Mickey Cartoons edited to the albums music, that LP went Gold, (500,00), then Platinum (1,000,000) until it became the first children's album to go double platinum (2,000,000).
While that sort of thing happening with these vintage titles might seem questionable, getting the word out about them is essential. There are a lot of Disney fans who are looking for this sort of thing but I'm willing to wager a lot of them don't know about it.
Thanks again for the number!

Swiss Family
Kaijueguy, glad you were able to order the "Swiss Family Robinson" set. Be sure to post your reaction, as I think it'll help continue the discussion and call attention to the new DVD series.
That's an excellent point about how Disney sold LPs in the late 1970s. I remember those very well and still have my copies today!

GOOD GRIEF this sounds like a great series! I cant wait to hear about the rest of the titles to be released in the first wave. Im very disappointed tho that you cant just order the titles you want. I have no interest in Double Dipping on the new releases.
QUESTION: If there is a title you dont want and need to return it....WHO PAYS THE SHIPPING?? Please let me know about that. If they pay it then I will go ahead and join. If I pay the shipping im going to hold off on this.

I called today, and was told that movies would come automatically each month, and you'd be billed right then. When you receive the movie, and you decide you don't want to buy it, call and Disney will send you a return slip. Then when they've received the movie back, your credit card will be credited the amount.a-net-fan wrote:GOOD GRIEF this sounds like a great series! I think I'm going to wait a while on this.... From what has been described here as to the first wave's titles, I'd be sending everything back, and that represents too many opportunities where mail-ins and refunds can get goofed up.
^Thank you and I agree. I think I will hold off until I see the rest of the titles. I would think the best way to launch this series would be to capture as many ppls attention with it by offering movies that have not been released before first. I also want to wait and see what the quality of these releases are once we get to the titles that previously got generic releases presented in incorrect aspect racios.

This line has potential, but I'm skeptical as always with Disney's treatment of their older live action titles. However, I'd really like to see titles like The Happiest Millionaire get 16:9 enhanced picture or awful looking pan and scan releases fixed. How about a Babes in Toyland 50th Anniversary Edition for 2011?
And what happened to the "Walt Disney Film Classics" line from last year?

Apple Dumpling Gang disc replacement
I'm new here but noticed this post , I recently joyed The Wide World of Disney Signature edition dvd program. When I called The operator gave me a choice for my first movie, The Apple Dumpling Gang or Swiss Family Robinson. I chose the Apple Dumpling Gang, received my movie a couple of days ago and noticed they had also given me the Apple Dumpling Gang Rides again. I called Customer Service this morning and told them about the issue. Operator told me there were aware of the issue and told me they would be sending out a replacement disc, she also stated I could keep the Apple Dumpling Gang Rides again for my inconvenience. I do have something to say about the packaging though, I like the tin but hate the cheap plastic holder they have put inside the tin. The way the disc is stored inside the booklet is not a good idea as well (easily scratches discs), and on top of that if you want to put the booklet back in the plastic holder you booklet will get bent and it doesn't really stay in place, I wish they gave me a normal disc holder just like in the treasure line.

Cool you got to choose. Maybe there is hope for having the option to just order the volumes you want.bucklingpirate wrote:I'm new here but noticed this post , I recently joyed The Wide World of Disney Signature edition dvd program. QUESTION ABOUT THE APPLE DUMPLING GANG/ APPLE DUMPLING GANG RIDES AGAIN....... Are there any bonus features and is it presented in Widescreen??

Thank you very much. So it isnt widescreen and it doesnt really have any bonus material. Considering it was a mistake to send the disc in the first place I guess we cant say that this is the way future releases in this series will be presented. It looks like they are first offering the titles that already are/have been released in the correct aspect and have bonus features?bucklingpirate wrote:The APPLE DUMPLING GANG RIDES AGAIN is the exact dvd from the Don Knotts collection, its a repackage.
Do you guys think it would be benefitial for all of us to get together and call the number and actually make requests on what titles we would like to see included in this series? Let them know that a number of people arent going to want to double dip on titles they already own and that by releasing unreleased content they are setting themselves up for much better sales? Iv been waiting long enough for Escapade in Florence and The Horsemasters to come to DVD.
