The Evil Dead Coming To Blu-Ray Later This Year!
The Sam Raimi/Bruce Campbell horror classic The Evil Dead is finally hitting Blu-Ray later this year! Fangoria (via it's blog has the story).:

"First, a bit of a mea culpa: We discovered this news tidbit in an on-line article from Video Business a little while back, and have spent the time since trying to dig up more details. None were forthcoming, and since then the mag and its on-line incarnation have gone defunct, so the original posted item has been lost in cyberspace. But trust us: it was announced that THE EVIL DEAD will be making its hi-def disc debut later this year.
A source from Anchor Bay Entertainment, which has issued Sam Raimi’s classic gruefest in several DVD editions over the past decade, confirmed to the trade that the movie is on their Blu-ray slate for 2010. We haven’t been able to confirm which extras will be ported over from those previous discs, whether new ones will be created or if Raimi and co. are directly involved, but we’ll keep digging and bring you further info as we get it!"

It's actually called "Within The Woods". And I'm not sure if it will make any official home video debut due to some rights issues (mainly with the music). It was supposed to be with the Book of The Dead edition in 2002 that would featured a new score but was dropped for some reason. If it should make it on the Blu-Ray, it would likely be the one featuring the rescored music. More info can be found here.:

Anyway, Horrorbid.com gives us an update:

"The heavens have opened up and spit out the greatest news this Deadite/Bidite has heard in a long time. Anchor Bay Home Entertainment is slated to debut the Blu-ray later this summer, more precisely August 31st! Mark your calenders because this is a must own...
Follow up:
Details are more than sketchy at this point as we are not sure what the cover art or Blu-ray specs will be. We are hearing that a brand new transfer and completely new audio commentary by Sam and Bruce will most likely make it's presence felt. Rumors of it also containing an updated quality look at the film the started it all "Within the Woods" has us crossing our fingers as well. With the zillion versions of "Army" put out over the years it's great to see the original getting much need attention as well. Stay tuned for more details as we get them."

I still don't do Blu-Ray, so I wouldn't know this - can U.S. Blu-Ray play Blu-Ray discs of all regions?
Because that Suspiria disc is not from North America.

Released: October 2, 2007 in the U.S. - one of Anchor Bay's first, if I'm not mistaken.

Released: September 15, 2009 in the U.S. (and on HD-DVD June 26, 2007)

And those look absolutely horrible. Do not buy those if you want your Blu-rays to look like film. I really hope that the original 1.33:1 version of The Evil Dead looks good, the cropped widescreen version could be DNR'ed to hell, for all I care.Lazario wrote:I still don't do Blu-Ray, so I wouldn't know this - can U.S. Blu-Ray play Blu-Ray discs of all regions?

What does that mean?
So, do you know how many DVDs even today are only available in North America? Do you know how many Blu-rays are only available in North America? Do we just sit bitching and moaning (actually we do bitch) but we also do something about it so we can watch the movies and tv episodes we want to watch.Lazario wrote:I still don't do Blu-Ray, so I wouldn't know this - can U.S. Blu-Ray play Blu-Ray discs of all regions?

If you want the movies, you have to find ways to work around the system. Don't just sit there complaining when there is something you can do.
I have no idea if the Suspiria disc is region locked or not - but you can easily find out. Post the question on a few horror forums or European based DVD/Home Video forums.
That said, most likely it is - not because of the European distributors, but because (ironically) the US distributors put pressure on them to do so. Realistically, the European distributor would love to have a few thousand extra sales to the US on their balance sheets.

I didn't mean it to come off like bitching but I think you remember me (haven't we met somewhere before?2099net wrote:Do we just sit bitching and moaning (actually we do bitch) but we also do something about it so we can watch the movies and tv episodes we want to watch.

Unlocking other region discs isn't the only issue with me doing foreign DVD (Blu-Ray or standard). There's also the procurring of the DVD's (who to buy from) and where on Earth to find a really good region-free DVD player. I haven't had any luck yet and that's just for standard.

DNR means 'digital noise reduction'. It's used to eliminate grain, primarily. However, very often it removes too much grain, and removes detail in the picture in the process. This makes everything look really unnatural and waxy. For example, The Longest Day, Spartacus and Gangs of New York. The latter has a comparison with the remastered version, so you can see clearly how awful the first version looked.Lazario wrote:Remember, I'm a standard-DVD primate:KubrickFan wrote:And those look absolutely horrible.
