Her horse is cute LOL
How confusing is that all these product ranges still reffer to the movie as Rapunzel. I seriously don't get how Disney thinks it's better to rename this movie this late in the game...

Disney has to do Rapunzel => Tangled

Post by leuchtmuschel »

I just have taken a look for upcoming books of Disney at amazon.com.

I got this list:
50. Rapunzel Picture Book (Hardcover - Sept. 14, 2010)
Buy new: $14.99

51. Rapunzel Read-Along Storybook and CD (Paperback - Sept. 14, 2010)
Buy new: $6.99

52. Rapunzel Reusable Sticker Book by RH Disney (Paperback - Sept. 14, 2010)
Buy new: $6.99

53. Rapunzel's Journal: Life From the Tower (Hardcover - Sept. 14, 2010)
Buy new: $12.99

54. Rapunzel: Stick To Your Dreams: A Sticker-Activity Storybook (Hardcover - Sept. 14, 2010)
Buy new: $14.99

It seems that Disney has to done an old antique tradition from the old pharaohs in replacing “Rapunzel” into “Tangled”.

In Germany nearly everyone knows the fairy tale “Rapunzel”. No one knows what “Tangled” means. The German translation is “verwirrend” or “durcheinander kommen” as film title. In English the German translation means only “to tangle up” with no special other meanings coming up. The only possible translation for “Tangled” into German is “Rapunzel”.

Strange Disney Marketing World. Solving this riddle could be so easy...

So far 132 people have signed my petition. But we need MANY more people to sign to even stand a chance at even getting noticed. So spread the word and sign it, it's free, doesn't take any time and who knows. You have a choice between doing nothing and doing something...

Yeah, I have NO idea how they're doing this in Dutch. Tangled... I can't even think of a word that could somehow be anything similar. Everyone knows the story of Rapunzel as "Raponsje" over here and it's very well known. There's even a Dutch fairytale theme park where the tower and the girl with the golden hair is one of their most iconic attractions. And well over 50 years old.

Disney does not understand that Rapunzel is a different thing altogether. It's as iconic as anything they've ever made. The Princess and the Frog was clumsily titled to begin with. Even in the trailer they said "everyone thinks they know the story of the The princess and the frog"... uh no.. we know about "The Frog Prince" though.... If anything, TPATF could also be a sign that audiences don't want twists on their fairytales anymore? Tangled could even make thing much worse.

Well, they can't call it "klitten" for obvious reasons. "Verward" or "In de war" makes it sound like a psychological thriller about someone with schizophrenia, "Verstrengeld" is way too difficult for dutch children. The only logical title for the netherlands would be "Raponsje", for sakes of recogisibility, etc. "Tangled" is a translation mess, that way every country will need to go for a COMPLETELY different title, since the term is very hard to translate as it has different meaning or can't be translated into one word in other languages... More reasons to not use the title "Tangled"

I actually don't like Rapunzel's Dutch name (Raponsje). Every time I talk about her I refer to her as Rapunzel. In the Barbie version she's also still called Rapunzel in the Dutch translation.

By the way, guys from the Netherlands, what about: 'In de knoop?' (It could work, even thoug it sounds completely idiot!) I can hear the voice from the trailer already: NU IN DE BIOSCOOP, DISNEY'S NIEUWE MEESTERWERK 'IN DE KNOOP'!* I will sound really strange.

Maybe if they keep the title Rapunzel (or the local translation of that name) for the rest of the world, and only use the name Tangled for English speaking countries? Kinda like how TLK1 1/2 was called TLK3 here in Europe.

* This obviously means something like: Now in the cinema, Disney's newest mastepiece: Tangled!

POSSIBLE SPOILERS:

Am I the only one to notice that there are not one but TWO "smaller" Rapunzels? Are these just Rapunzel when she is small... or do you think they are sticking with the fairy tale and she really does have twins? It seems odd to me that they would place TWO of them together in the display if it were only supposed to be Rapunzel when she was young.

END SPOILERS.

And on a different note, how many little girls are going to be thinking that they changed the actual character name of "Rapunzel" to "Tangled"? I can hear it now... Princess Tangled and Flynn Ryder. Oh brother..

Nomad, I think you're reading into it too much. I would guess that those are Rapunzel's "Disney Princess Darlings." You know, those bizarre tiny dolls with large heads? Or maybe they're just tiny so that the hair can be to scale without being a ludicrous amount of fake hair. Either way, I doubt that they're anything other than Rapunzel dolls.

Exactly. The title is classic and extremely well-known. Why change it for something uninspired and unflattering?
