No, it sounds fair to me. It's only now Disney are infringing on Luxo's marketplace with the limited edition Luxo Jr Lamp set, which lets face it, 9/10 people would assume was a Luxo made lamp.

It does seem silly that Disney would assume they could use the image of the character to make a product out of. It's like disney making Barbi's but calling them "Barbi the 2nd" and expecting to get away with it since the character is seen in Toy Story 2.

Well, the Luxo Jr lamp set seems to be cancelled in the UK at least. Presumably due to the legal action mentioned above.

It's not on Amazon.co.uk at all anymore, and HMV now says "deleted"

So what'll happen to all the lamps? Will they just go in the landfills?

No idea. It appears the US release is still on though for the UP/Lamp pack.

Lawsuits take a long time to process, it shouldn't effect the selling the lamp at all. even if they won, it'll be a while before they take them off the market. probably by then they would have stopped production anyway.

Don't forget as well, the US and the EU have different laws and processes, and Luxo are an European company (so probably concentrating on blocking the European sales over US sales initially).

For the Birds Controversy
http://www.cartoonbrew.com/shorts/for-t ... versy.html

Wow, um, Small Fry is a little disturbing. The plots are similar, in the sense that a bigger bird wants to be on a wire with littler birds, but they are pretty different otherwise.

Oh, dear.... That was.... really odd....

Seriously, is anyone else creeped out by all of the little birds flaking into ashes? I know they were mean, but.... Jeez!

Yeah, "For the Birds" was much, much better.

I was just thinking...

1) We know that The Bear and the Bow features a princess, but I wonder how marketing will treat it...will they feature the princess much at all in the trailers? Will boys complain once they see the film that there is a princess?

2) When and if Pixar has its first flop, I wonder what Lasseter will blame. Obviously, it's Pixar, where "story is king", so will he say that they put a crappy film into production? If he blames the story and characters for "flops" like Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Brother Bear, and Home on the Range, I wonder if he'll apply the same logic to his own company's films.

(I posted similar thoughts in the TP&tF thread...but they're a little different, I guess...)

I think they'll downplay the princess and play up the bear and other things. I mean, I was already kinda fooled that it wasn't about a princess until he brought it up due to the name alone. I have a feeling as far as princess movies go this will be marketed towards guys more than frog and the like.

I cant really answer the hypothetical question you asked, because I cant imagine pixar putting out a flop, it hasn't happened yet. the closest thing to that would be Cars, and even that was successful enough to warrant a sequel apparently, so who can really say at this point how they would react.

one thing to keep in mind that not everyone at pixar pushes the story is king thing. Ive heard podcasts with pixar employees that would argue that characters are king. That you can have an alright story that still works because the characters were so well done.

But, I don't think it would be crazy to see Pixar admit something went wrong regarding the structure of their first flop. They are highly critical of themselves already. They cant blame marketing, because they are a household name, people have no reason not to trust that every one of their movies are worth seeing. Which brings me to another point, even if Pixar did make a bad movie, I don't think it would turn people away unless they did a number of those in a row, causing people to loose their faith in the studio. In other words, Ratatouille would have to have been horrible, coming off the heels of Cars, to then lead to Wall-e being their first flop. Its a domino effect. I dont expect any of their movies to flop overnight, it'll be a gradual trend if and when we see it.

I have a feeling they'd market it like Mulan, as more of an adventure story than anything else. I mean, from what we've heard about it, it certainly doesn't seem like a typical "Princess-story."
