the very idea of someone thinking the artists at Disney would even acknowledge let alone reference the existence of Dragonball Z is funny in and of itself.
so, no. If anything, Rapunzels big eyes are simply part of trademark Glen Keane Disney females. And they lost me at Bibbidy Bobbidy what now?

DBZ is a big franchise and is influential to many people , I doubt Disney would not acknowledge that, and I'm sure there are some disney artist out there that are fan of DBZ. What I was WTF-ing at was the fact they site using DBZ as a reference inspiration for this movie.

This isn't fault. When Akira Toriyama created the characters Bibbidi (babbidi's father), Babbidi, and Buu I used the "bibbidi bobbidi boo" title song as an inspiration and those three characters involve magic in their abilities
I thought the whole DragonBallZ reference was just a joke. Were they being serious? But when I read this I couldn't stop laughing! It's like IagoZazu said, I imagined Rapunzel becoming super saiyan and it made me burst our laughing
Thank you Kyle for confirming, and your great info!
If you know any more...do you know if that cel shading also looked painterly?
I have, for a while now, though Rapunzel would look great with CGI background and characters with the background looking like very detailed oil paintings and the characters outlined with painting-like shading. Then, they would just be more detailed, more lush, oil-looking versions of the previous hand-drawn films.
But do you know if the cel shading tried to look painterly at all? Because even Snow White had a blended white in her black hair for the shine in it, and Figaro had a similar shine effect for his black hair. The Walt Disney artists didn't use all lined shadows, but some blending, man! And, of course, their films were painted, so obviously they looked painterly and blended. In fact, even in The Rescuers Down Under, Beauty and the Beast, and on, the new artists tried to do a blended shadow thing, and also the blended blush in Belle's cheeks, just like Snow White's painted blush.
Wait....does this mean the guy Rapunzel falls in love with is Goku or Gohan? Or Trunks...
I also thought maybe that was a joke....like some prank someone would put on wikipedia.......like if wikipedia said the inspiration for Stitch in Lilo and Stitch and eventually Stitch's Cousins came from Pokemon

I read it's still coming out on November 24, 2010, but thats for the wide release. The Novmeber 12th date is for the limited release. I guess we'll find out once Disney confirms.
Yah that's what I think it is. But the limited release was supposed to be on November 24th, but now it changed to the 12th, allowing for the wide release on the 24th, which is great since it allows its release to be on thanksgiving in the USA. But this is all theoretical until Disney finally comes out and says something for once.
All I remember about that arc in DBZ is that Buu had the power to turn people into candy. At least, that was what is said in the English dub, and goodness knows how badly those things are mangled!
But, yeah, I can just imagine, like, Rapunzel being harassed by Mother Gothel and being like, "Ka... Me... Ha... Me... HAAAAAAA!!!"

I don't see what's so surprising. I'm sure people who work at Disney can enjoy anime also....
Apparently Disney has a tendency to release their annual year report on the second sunday of the month january. Which is this sunday, which means we will most likely get a new visual for Rapunzel, if the pattern of the past few years is being followed... Fingers crossed and keep your eyes peeled!
I'm wondering when the disney animation website will be updated!
Disney Duster wrote:Glen Keane credits animator Kyle Strawitz for achieving the painterly style of the film: "Kyle helped us get that Fragonard look of the girl on the swing... He took the house from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and built it in CGI, and painted it so that it looked like a flat painting that suddenly started to move, and it had dimension and kept all of the soft, round curves of the brushstrokes of watercolor. Kyle really helped me start to believe that the things I wanted to see were possible... that you could move in a Disney painterly world."
If Disney was able to this this three or four years ago, as well as pruducing the famous test with the squirrel and the 3D image of the girl in the swing, it should be possible for them to do it even better today. Especially since they have done a couple of more CGI movies before this one, meaning they should be even more experienced now.
I wonder if the need to meet the November 2010 deadline was the reason for Rapuzel's less-painterly visuals. The whole production has cost them enough money already so I wouldn't be surprised if the execs ordered the team to just get the damn thing finished. Btw, the look Kyle described (CG with outlines) sounds really appealing, it's a shame we'll never get to see it.
I found this new article. Here's what Im so concerned about.
There were other good ones if you click back though. There were also some interesting comments which I'd hoped to address. But this week went on as long as Rapunzel's locks. Jack observed/worried that Disney will be going all snarky/cynical with this one (note the poses) and misses the sense of innocence and wonder that used to be found in the genre. Duly noted and I do think that's a shame. Especially since I love the story of Rapunzel and if any character shouldn't be worldly and snarky it's probably the one who's a total shut in with no outside contact.
I have to disagree.Rapunzel is innocent. She just thinks that everything revolves around her. When she's out of the tower she'll act like a child.
Just because she's tying up Flynn doesn't mean she has "girl power".
She'll have her girl power when she understands that she can't do this to people.

Yes. Tthe backgrounds more than anything were going to be painterly, with the characters having charcoal and/or pencily outlines and shading. It sounded to me like a mix of all sorts of mediums, pencil, paint, charcoal, 3d. Was going to be much more stylized than what we have now.
Thank you Kyle. I'm also glad you agree with me about it being a real shame if Rapunzel has lost all that. I also agree Candy_Bonita that Rapunzel wil not be as snarky and cynical as that poster thought...though I hope we turn out to be right and she had childish, unworldy innocence and wonder.
