1. Cinderella ~ Even though the mice kind of override the movie, Lady Tremaine is an excellent villain, Ilene Woods plays Cinderella to perfection, and the animation is spectacular (though the animals and humans seem to be designed for different movies). And even though the mice are the weakest part of the film, they are still more entertaining than either the dwarves or the fairies to me in the Walt-era films with the same problem.
2. Lady and the Tramp ~ This movie has a beautiful simplicity to it. The story is non-existent, but the characters are the most interesting part of this film regardless. And, again, the animation is excellent.
3. Sleeping Beauty ~ Mostly I find this a dull film (as with the next three). The only reason it's ranked higher is the beautiful design/animation and Maleficent. The fairies don't bother me (I find them entertaining), but it's sad that the story is so thin and bland that it has to rely on them to fill screen-time.
4. Alice In Wonderland ~ The design for this film is a highlight, and I enjoy the Cheshire Cat and Alice. The Queen of Hearts episode is also the highlight. But the rest of is irritating--I share Alice's frustration--when it's not boring.
5. Peter Pan ~ This is easily one of my least favorite Disney films. As with all of their works, there are shining moments, but they only shine because the rest of it is so unbearable. All the women are in heat, Peter is annoying beyond belief and the portrayal of the Native Americans is just embarassing. Hook has also always been a disappointment to me. I'm not adverse to comedic villains, and Hook does that pretty well. The problem is the movie needs a serious villain, and when it tries to force Hook to play the part, it fails. You just can't take him seriously, ever. Most other adaptations of Peter Pan succeed much better than this one.

Mixed decade. The first 2 in my top ten, with the last 3 all being pretty low on my list.

Favorite 50's Film?

Post by Disney Duster »

1. Cinderella for obvious reasons (like it's awesome!).

Babaloo, I am soooooo glad you like Cinderella sooo much!

I am curious about your stage version of Cinderella. Was that the "Cinderella with Kids" version? I think the fairy godmother asks the audience to help her spells and other interactivity.

I'm quite glad to hear you think the lead captured the Disney version's personality! Did you help with that?

But what I really want to now is more about the production, and pictures if possible...! Please! If you need to find another thread, you could start your own or you could use this:

Cinderella Discussion

Or search for one you think fits more! Otherwise I would ask you to private message (pm) me, but I don't think you can. You could also E-mail me but let me know first.

First of all I hope I'm not getting anyone mad since this isn't the right thread to reply to this, but I didn't want to bring up an old discussion to reply to these questions. So, sorry in advance!

This is probably a disappointment, but it wasn't any grand release. At the high school I volunteer at they put on two stage productions a year. One from the drama club (spring time) which put on official plays written by professionals, and another (winter time), where the students get to pick any story and rewrite the story (that includes scenes and script. They could even add characters if they wanted to. Like, to appeal to high school kids, they added the three blind mice). Well this year they picked to do Disney's Cinderella (which I was surprised since they picked another Disney movie (when I was in grade 12 three years ago we did Alice in Wonderland (my doing 8))). So they watch the movie (I brought my DVD of course 8)), write their own scripts, design sets, and then practice for a Christmas release. They retained all the characters from the original movie, except added more backstory for the prince, king, and a new character the queen (So like a second story). So this wasn't the "Cinderella with Kids" version, but an adaption. Of course we couldn't do much advertising since Disney would be all over us :P. So the time set was the same (except for the Queen (to add to the humour for high school kids) they had the band Queen follow her around), and everything was the same, except with more humour (although I love Cinderella and its original tone), but the one thing that everyone wanted to keep for sure (even without my help) was Cinderella's character and personality, and the lead actress played it well.

Unfortunately my laptop with all my pictures crashed and with it, everything in it :(. If you want to know anything else just PM me, but I hope hearing that this wasn't a grand performance was disappointing.

2. Peter Pan
3. Cinderella
4. Lady and the Tramp

For me this was an oustanding decade for Disney animtated movies.

1. Sleeping Beauty - I love the art in this movie and while it probably doesn't have a great story it has a great heart and that resonates with me.
2. Alice in Wonderland - Absolutely wacky and zany and I love it.
3. Peter Pan - Middle of this pack though I can't place my finger on why.
4. Cinderella - Great movie and my wife's favorite but I just like the others more.
5. Lady and the Tramp - Another story with heart but I despise Aunt Sara and that's enough to make this the worst of a great lot.

hmm, I don't know, for me it's not that hard^^ I like them all but there are just two which I really love.

1. Sleeping Beauty: At others pointed out the story's nothing special, but despite of that Sleeping Beauty has my favourite villain, loveable other characters (the fairies), a great and unique Style and I also love the integration of the classic compositions by Tschaikowsky.

2. Alice in Wonderland: A film full of nonsense and I love it just for being exactly that :D

3. Cinderella: During my childhood it was one of my favourites. Today I like it very much but the mices annoys me a little, as the stupid german opening does. If you want something to laugh, I translated it for you:

"Here comes a story which we all know. And nevertheless you can't hear it often enough. That great is the story about 'Aschenputtel' and her way through thick and thin till the victory over all ugly and evil. Because this story is haunting and instructive at once it exists not just at us but all over the world, also in faraway America. There's "Aschenputtel" by the way called "Cinderella". And who appears else in our story? Anastasia ans Drisella! These are the both stepsisters. Two evil girls who enjoy to hurt Cinderella. Their mother abet them to do, because she can't accept that Cinderella is prettier than her own daughters. In this old castle the big filmmaker Walt Disney laid the storyline of our tale and let us over the next 1,5 hours experience how Cinderella accomplished to become a happy girl. Oooh, did I said again Cinderella? ah.. Well, of course. As I told you 'Aschenputtel' in English will be called 'Cinderella'."

4. Lady and the Tramp

= Peter Pan: I enjoy both but most of the DACs I like better.

The lightness and the absence of any tearjerkers or 'romantic tension' is what makes the film so appealing to me. It's just one fun ride through a magical, faraway land where nobody has grown up! What more do you want?

Lady and the Tramp is my favorite, and I'm surprised at how little recognition it gets on DU. Sleeping Beauty I appreciate for the wonderful artwork (I could look at one scene forever and still be in awe), but the story and characters bore me.

1. Lady and the Tramp
2. Cinderella
3. Peter Pan
4. Sleeping Beauty
5. Alice in Wonderland

All in all, a very strong decade for Disney, save for Alice.

Exact same way I feel about it.

As for the lack of a tearjerker moment when Tink is supposedly dead, due to a cut to a more lighthearted moment, same thing happened in Lady and the Tramp. It goes straight from us thinking a dog dead to a happy christmas celebration. The end is probably what bothers me most about Lady and the Tramp, everything else is good. I think it doesn't get recognized as much because its the only Disney Animated Classic from the 50's not based on a book and doesn't include magic/fantasy. It more down to earth. I love it even more as a dog lover (would've loved a Rottweiler, imagine the German accent).

rotfl !!!!!
I can imagine that that gets extremely annoying, Scamander! So, wait, that plays during the movie!? What were those dubbing people thinking!?
Goliath wrote: It's just one fun ride through a magical, faraway land where nobody has grown up! What more do you want?
But the thing is, the whole point of the movie is that Wendy does grow up. She goes from wanting to be a child in the nursery, to becoming a "little mother," and accepting responsibility of those who depend upon her. And that's why more romantic tension between her and Peter would have really, really been perfect, as a part of her transition into womanhood!

And as for Tink.... I just feel like we as an audience would have had more reason to care about her if we really did think she was dead. In the original "Peter Pan," we really aren't given much reason at all to care about Tink, in fact, we're given more incentive to find her obnoxious and bitchy! (Which is why I approve of her having her own film series. Seeing her story and her own life really does give you reasons to love her.)

1. Sleeping Beauty
2. Peter Pan
3. Cinderella
4. Lady and the Tramp
5. Alice in Wonderland

While this one was an easy choice, Sleeping Beauty ties with The Little Mermaid for my favorite Disney film, it was very hard to rank order the rest. All of these films were amazing.

Hmmm... I don't think she has to have romantic tension with Peter, or with anybody, to make the transition to womanhood. I found it refreshing that it was absent. Certainly in a 1950's film, you would have expected it to be a part of a girl's transition to womanhood to *have* to have a man by her side, but ultimately the überconservative Walt Disney, of all people, chose to leave it out!

I know that, and I'm not saying she needed a "man by her side." I just meant a little romantic tension, not a full-blown romance. And yes, she does make the switch without him. But more of the "sexual awakening" subtext. Not in a dirty way, and certainly not overtly, but just more for maturation value. At the end of the movie, she's no longer a girl, she's a young woman. And a stronger attraction between her and Peter might have helped pull that off a little less abruptly. Like all of a sudden after the incident in the Indian camp, she goes from "Gee, Peter, Neverland is great!" to "Children, come on, we need to go home!" It's like.... really really sudden.
