"The Golden Girls" on Hallmark: Is it good or bad?
Recently Hallmark Channel began airing episodes of "The Golden Girls." This seemed a bit odd due to the fact that their usual programming doesn't often involve the language and subject matter that "The Golden Girls" contains. So, it seems that they have found a way around that by heavily editing the episodes. There are certain episodes that have been so edited that certain sub-plots either become lost or misunderstood. As for any cursing/fowl language it either gets muted or over-dubbed with a laugh track. At any rate it appears to be a sloppy job. Of course, as I'm sure everyone knows, these used to run on Lifetime which done a much better job of editing than whomever is doing it for Hallmark. When the show stopped airing on Lifetime it immediately went to Hallmark and We channels. When it airs on We the only heavy editing is that they play commercials over top of the end credits [to Hallmark's credit they do leave the original end credits in full-screen if they have dialogue with them]. Does anyone else here agree that "The Golden Girls" should be back on Lifetime or at least be able to air without such heavy editing?

I own the series on DVD so it doesn't matter to me. I do watch TGG on Hallmark every now and then when there's nothing else on (which has become more and more nowadays). I wish they'd take off 2 of TGG episodes and put at least one episode of Murder, She Wrote back on.

I usually always watch them on DVD but I have seen episodes on Hallmark and couldn't get over what a hack job they've done on them!tlc38tlc38 wrote:I own the series on DVD so it doesn't matter to me. I also wish they would show Murder She Wrote again and what's up with Mama's Family? I miss seeing it on TV

I haven't seen any of TGG on Hallmark, but if it's anything like the edits they did for "Cheers", I'm sure they're terrible. From the looks of people posting here, I seem to be right in my assumption. Honestly, if it doesn't fit your station's mantra to air "The Golden Girls" unedited (and I know it's a little racy, but come on, it's hardly "Sex and the City" or "The Sopranos"), maybe you should just stick with "The Andy Griffith Show" or something.

I don't care for Murder She Wrote, but I do wish they'd add Mama's Family! That's one of my all-time faves, and it should fit well on Hallmark! And what's up with that show on DVD, c'mon! I want to own it so badly!
As for Golden Girls, I didn't realize they were airing edited versions. I watch it there sometimes and it's still funny, but editing sucks. Someday, I'll have to get that show on DVD.

I don't mind the edits so much, mainly because if I'm ever watching "The Golden Girls" on Hallmark or WE it's as a background noise to something else. Plus, having the whole series on DVD, if I wanted to watch a complete episode, I'd just watch the DVD (even if some episodes in Seasons 3 and 5 are the syndicated ones, harrumph!).
The edits are hilarious, though. You can tell when they hastily include a music cue and fade to go to commercial, or when a laugh track is choppy because they removed a certain part of a joke. I distinctly remember a WE broadcast of the pilot episode. Rose asks, "What do we have for collateral? A gay cook?" and then it had a quick laugh track and fade to black rather than continue the scene with "Dorothy, we'll become bag ladies!"
