Favorite Disney Animated Classic from the 80s?

[Disney's Divinity]

1. The Little Mermaid ~ I won't go in-depth, because I've explained 20x over why this is my favorite Disney film. All I'll add is that the cast is one of the strongest of all their films (including the characters, though I'm referring mostly to the voices).
2. The Great Mouse Detective ~ This is an excellent and, outside of this forum, a clearly underrated film. I would almost put it on the same level as Mermaid, except that I think Ratigan's design is horrid and some of the songs were rather bad lyrically (I almost feel the movie would be better without any music, except the "Goodbye, So Soon" which plays in the background). Basil ultimately makes the film, ending up a very original and memorable Disney lead. Also, I adore the main theme/score for the film.
3. Oliver & Company ~ This is kind of a hit-and-miss film. I enjoy it at times, but for the most part it's not memorable. I liked most of the dog characters, but I think the film is weak because of the movie's design/animation (it's fairly weak, to me), Oliver's annoying voice, and because Sykes is done rather badly. He tries to be a male Cruella, but comes nowhere near. I guess it's because Cruella seemed rather unrealistic and over-the-top from the moment she came onscreen, thus it worked for her character to be driving in the snow and over banks. But Sykes is dealt with more seriously, and it's rather unbelievable that he wouldn't have backup men or that he would drive off onto a traintrack. But the music's good.
4. The Fox and the Hound ~ I've actually always had a fondness for this film. I still enjoy it, but it's horribly flawed. I think the movie really goes bad in the 2nd act with the introduction of Mickey Rooney and Vixey. It's another one of those films that goes for a Bambi-ish type of feeling, except with pets instead of wild animals (though I don't think it succeeds as well as in Bambi). Overall, I like a lot of the characters (I'm one of the few, it seems, who loved the birds chasing the caterpillar), and the movie has a charm to it you might not expect.
5. The Black Cauldron ~ I think this movie mostly suffers from being completely forgettable (and it seems even Disney's forgot about it at this point). None of the characters stay with you, though I enjoy them at the time, and I can't really explain why. This is a horrible explanation, but it just doesn't even feel "Disney" at points--it's like one of those crappy, unoriginal movies that gets played on Scy-fy. However, the witches are entertaining and the Horned King is a pretty good villain, imo. But someone needed to give that pig some pills--she never shut up. (Also, though it doesn't matter in regards to the film itself, but the books were a lot better).

Overall, I think this is a so-so decade. Even the most flawed films here have a charm to them.

1. The Great Mouse Detective - Simply one of my favorite Disney movies ever
2. The Little Mermaid - Great soundtrack and a great movie
3. The Black Cauldron - contains one of my favorite characters... I don't actually need to say who that is do I? I saw this movie in 6th grade when I went on my first date... Melissa Foslid. I wonder what happened to her.
4. The Fox and the Hound - Another movie I saw as a child and I remember crying. I still cry every time she brings Tod to the sanctuary.

Little Mermaid is unquestionable the number one here for me, but i also liked the great mouse detective and the black cauldron. I didn't like at all the last two in my list.

TLM is easily the one that stands out the most of the decade since it helped revived the Disney Animated Classic for the 90s.

I actually think this is a stronger era than people give it credit for, even with TLM aside.

TGMD would be even better had the budget not been slashed in half and had it kept its original release date of 1987.

Fox and the Hound's main flaw is not killing off Chief. It already is pretty popular with the generation who grew up with it but I think it would be considered more of a classic with that one change...and also better songs.

The Black Cauldron really isn't that bad of a film if you look at it on its own. It's just a terrible adaptation of an award-winning book series.

Oliver I liked more than I thought and I'm fond of the music as well. The characters leave a lot to be desired though and the animation is truly abysmal. I think this is easily one of the cheapest looking Disney films.

The Little Mermaid for me. My second favorite Disney movie. Love the setting, the songs, the characters, the animation and the dark atmosphere.

-The Great Mouse Detective: I wish I can like it but never have been able to do so. However, I know it´s a gret movie and the second best of the Era.

-The Black Cauldron: As uneven and failed as it is Disney did try to do something with it. Love how obscure the atmposphere was and The Horned King is the most terrifying Disney villain.

-Oliver and Company: I don´t like. Don´t like the setting, the characters and the soundtrack with the exception of a couple of songs. However I understand the movie is good.

-The Fox and the Hound: Really dislike it. Too depressing just because (I explained before), the animation is incomplete in parts, the soundtrack is bad and songs are awful. Except for Tod and Copper the rest of the characters are forgettable.

What can I say, I find TLM slightly overrated, and TGMD pretty underrated. There's an undeniable gap between two and three, but all of those following films have their moments.

I agree about The Great Mouse Detective being underrated. It might be a better film than The Little Mermaid, but I'm biased because I grew up with The Little Mermaid.

1. The Little Mermaid - one of my top three Disney films, I just love everything about it.

2. Oliver & Company - speaking again as cat person/pet owner, this movie hits most of the the right notes, from the heartbreaking opening sequence to the happy ending. Some parts in the middle don't really work, and the villain is not that great or developed. The songs are amazing, and the movie as a whole has a really cool, fun, '80s vibe.

3. The Fox and the Hound - somber but also sweet portrayal of friendship and growing up, along with the movie's simple color scheme and score give it this wistful feeling. Not a lot of (quality) humor, but this movie doesn't really need it. All but one of the songs are terrible though.

4. The Great Mouse Detective - I never got into this movie. I watched it twice and thought it had strange pacing issues and I didn't like any of the characters. It also didn't feel like it came out in the '80s, but rather something out of the '70s.

5. The Black Cauldron - I only watched it once in full, thought it was forgettable and unappealing. Another one with a dreary color scheme.
