Favorite Disney Animated Classic from the 90s?

Post by tlc38tlc38 »

Based on the success of the "Disney 2000 Decade Poll", I thought it would be a cool idea to do these polls for the different Disney decades. Vote for which film you liked the most from each decade and feel free to rank the others in order from most liked to most disliked.

Here's my ranking:

1. Beauty and the Beast
2. Aladdin
3. The Lion King
4. Hercules
5. The Hunchback of Notre Dame
6. Pocahontas
7. Mulan
8. The Rescuers Down Under
9. Tarzan

Arguably the hardest decade for me to pick from!

1) Beauty and the Beast: I don't think I need any explanations. But I do have to say that I hated it when I was a kid (the Beast used to scare me). It wasn't until last summer that I rewatched when I bought the DVD and loved it!

2) Hunchback of Notre Dame: I really think this movie is one of Disney's greatest! I will say it would have been better without the gargoyles, but I love this movie! The music especially! My brothers who hate Disney (I know...it's sad) even love this movie! The music is so appealing to me and I love each character. Frollo is tied for favourite villain (Ursula is the other) as he isn't as exaggerated as other villains.

I'm just going to list the others in order as I'm really tired and I'm pretty sure my brain is dead right now. ***NOTE: I love each of these movies so just because something is lower than something else, doesn't mean I dislike it. I would say all ten movies (yes that includes Rescuers Down Under) are in the list of my favourites. So I'll rank according to good the music, animation and story (which includes characters) are***:

3. Hercules
4. Lion King
5. Aladdin
6. Pocahontas
7. Mulan
8. Tarzan
9. Rescuers Down Under

This was quite difficult, too. Besides Rescuers Down Under, I loved all of the other films:

Beauty and the Beast
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Aladdin
Mulan
The Lion King
Pocahontas
Hercules
Tarzan
Rescuers Down Under

That's probably not accurate.....

Was going for Beauty and the Beast but went for Mulan instead because last time I saw Mulan, I thought it was amazingly solid, funny and terribly moving.

Last time I saw Beauty and the Beast I thought 'wow this is nowhere as good as i remembered'.

I actually LOVE ALL of those, though Pocahontas I didn't love until they put the If I Never Knew You scene back in. My fave is Beauty and the Beast though, as I consider it Disney's best animated feature over all.

This is a really hard decade to put into any sort of order!!

Umm, let's see.... BatB is one of my favorite stories and, even with off-model animation and a weaker score than Hunchback, it's a really lovely fairytale with several moments that just take my breath away (and even though I said the score was weaker on the whole, that prologue music is one of my favorite bits of Disney score of all time).
Hunchback is a very close second! Quasi is probably one of my favorite Disney characters of all time (seriously... If I could date one Disney character, it would be Quasi! He's such a sweetheart!). And Frollo is one of the strongest Disney villains, just for his realism and sheer cruelty. Really, all of the characters are great, and almost every song is almost perfect, definitely Menken's greatest achievement. Why isn't this movie my favorite? I don't know. But I think it's the fact that Quasi ends up alone in the end. As a hopeless romantic, that fact always turns me off just a little, enough to make BatB higher on my favorites list.

I have no reasons to explain the others.... Well, except the fact that Aladdin is so low. I just thought it was a little ridicululous with the constant gags. That silly genie ruined a lot of good moments, IMO! I love the movie, but I think it's a bit too madcap for me at times... Sure, Hercules is zany, too, but I think it pulls it off better. It's genuinely funnier, and has more interesting characters, and an overall better style.

And, don't think I dislike "The Rescuers Down Under!" I really do like it, and I especially appreciate it as one of Disney's very few "action movies." But I'm a sucker for musicals. So... As far as the 90s goes.... The Rescuers Down Under was a little bit of a letdown.

2. The Lion King
3. The Hunchback of Norte Dame
4. Beauty and the Beast
5. Tarzan
6. Mulan

8. Pocahontas

Aladdin is my absolute favorite Disney movie. It has great songs, good humor, and fantastic animation. I seriously love all the characters! It has my favorite hero (Aladdin), princess (Jasmine), and villain (Jafar). Iago and Genie never fail to make me chuckle or laugh! "A Whole New World" is my favorite Disney song and the final battle is my favorite of all Disney animated classics.

The Lion King is my second favorite Disney movie of all and it becomes very powerful in many scenes. It has the best introduction of any Disney movie and I love all the songs. "Circle of Life" is one of my favorite Disney songs and "Be Prepared" is my favorite villain song. Scar is my second favorite villain and Zazu and Timon and Pumbaa are my favorite sidekicks.

The Hunchback of Norte Dame is very powerful and mature for a Disney movie, and that's what I like about it. Quasimodo is a very understanding hero and Frollo is so cruel and so realistic is that he's the only villain that makes me hate him throughout the movie, especially during his rampage across Paris. Despite what a lot think, the gargoyles didn't spoil the movie at all for me. This movie is brillant, and the biggest thing I love about it is the music. The music is spectacular.

All the other movies are great too. I just don't want to make a lengthy post explaining all of them.

@IagoZazu: I agree with you on the Gargoyles from the Hunchback of Notre Dame. My thoughts on the Gargoyles:

I think they played a very important role. Quasimodo had very little interaction with others and through the Gargoyles we got to see a lot of his feelings expressed. Think of it of it being like a person in real life who is alone but has a dog or a cat as a companion. They may not seem like much from an outsider's point of view but to the person they serve as a comporting companion that they can actually talk to freely and candidly. That's how I always viewed the Gargoyles. I always saw them as loyal companions for Quasimodo and through his interaction with them we got to see the pain he goes through and his dreams. At the same time they also provide comedic relief which in my opinion is very much needed since it is a very intense film. Some may see them as disposable but I see them as very important part of the film.

I'm agreeing with you, too! They're there for him to play off of, to reveal more of his own personality. They aren't just comic relief. And really, they're not all that distracting, the movie's powerful enough to make sure that you remember the serious bits! It's not terribly common that people feel that way about them, though.

I mentioned above that I didn't like the gargoyles in Hunchback, but I'd like to make myself clear. I actually like them, it's just I hate their song. No matter what one may say, like it gives the audience a break from the dark tone of the movie, I will always hate this song. It just doesn't fit in, and it, lyrically and musically is very weak. But Hunchback is still my second favourite from the 90's.

What you said is true. Quasimodo would have been terribly lonely up there in the belltower, and the gargoyles were the only ones that gave him much company. They were also the ones that gave him confidence when he most needed it. However, I agree with Babaloo that I didn't like their song. It wasn't bad, but I didn't like that it was placed right after Frollo's rampage to sort of make things less daunting and serious. I know that you said comedic relief is needed sometimes, but it just didn't feel right to have it take place right there. It would have been fine in a different scene.
