Re: DVD ADVICE
What has been discussed before that you are referring to with your "DUH"? An occasional post that actually says something other than dis iz ein bootleg or DUH etc... might break up the monotony of these very informative posts.Disney Guru wrote:This has been discussed before! DUH

Fantasia Anthology. It's out of print and becoming increasingly difficult to buy for a reasonable amount. The other two should be in print for a while.luigi_atlante wrote:Hi...what DVD do you recommend me to buy???
a) The Fantasia Anthology
b) Brother Bear
c) Treasure Planet
I love them all but I don't have a lot of money beacuse of the Disney treasures, jeje...so...what do you think???

I agree with Luke. If you can get Fantasia Anthology, definitely get your hands on it, as it is out of print. After that, I'd say that BB and TP are both around for a while, so it comes down to which movie you like better, and which has better features and whatnot. I haven't seen TP and I don't have either on DVD, so I can't help you out there.

I agree with Luke and Aaron. Fantasia Anthology is probably your best bet for the aforementioned reasons. BUt if money is such a big issue and you really want one of them right away, you should buy Treasure Planet since it has a reduced price. If you have membership for Sam's Club, you can get one for only $12.99ish!luigi_atlante wrote:Hi...what DVD do you recommend me to buy???

PeterPanfan,
I would buy Sword in the Stone now if you want it, considering it is one of the cheaper Disney dvds. I'm new to collecting though I just started in 2007 so I've tried to get as many Disney movies as I can because I never realized I would miss out on great films like Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and Beauty and the Beast. I wouldn't want to risk it because now I regret not buying those movies....

If you can find it at a fairly reasonable price (I'd say $15 or below), by all means, pick it up, it's one of the better GC discs out there. The only thing I can think that they may drop from a new release are the "Film Facts" text-pages, since hardly anyone does text-based stills anymore. Of course, you'll also be getting newer sneak peeks, Fastplay, kooky cover art, and the obligatory tree-killing DVD condom.PeterPanfan wrote:Should I buy Sword in the Stone now, since it's going out of print very soon, or take a risk and see if a special edition comes out.
If it were up to me, I'd get the old release, it can likely be found for a good price used (either online or in stores if you search enough times over).
Unless the new release adds something worthwhile (anamorphic transfer, or even a modest 10-minute retrospective featurette and the trailer), I'll likely pass on the new release.

I'm not sure. But if past releases (Dumbo, Robin Hood, etc.) are any indication of what we'll expect in the future (Classic Caballeros, Sword in the Stone) there's really not enough that's new that would be worth getting if one already has the old edition (which is why I haven't upgraded/double-dipped yet on several Disney titles, even if I want an anamorphic version of Robin Hood). And since SITS is still in print (at least for the next...16 days), might as well get it now and be done with it.PeterPanfan wrote:Escapay, are you sure a special edition is coming out, because it seemed like it from your post.

I hope I am posting my question in the right thread.
Should I buy the Aristocats Special Edition DVD? Any advice or suggestions? I haven't seen it before. The characters in the advertisments look cute. I hope the movie will be fun to watch.
I have watched 101 Dalmations and Lady and the Tramp. I like 101 Dalmations and Lady and the Tramp. I think that Beauty and the Beast is a bit too silly for me. No offense.
Bye

Also, if you've seen Disney's Jungle Book and Robin Hood, you'll probably like Aristocats because they all feature some of the same voice talent and a lot of similar character designs.
101 Dalmatians and Aristocats also have some plot similarities.

This is also a good thread for me to reiterate the value in buying pre-owned DVDs, as well as joining Netflix or some other online rental service.
If you're not sure if you're going to like a movie, rent it first and you've spent only a fraction of the retail price. Don't be stuck with a movie from an impulse buy that you didn't enjoy. Even trading/cashing it in will get you less value than the cost of renting it.
I wrote an article several years ago for my old Geocities page where I shared advice from my years of experience buying pre-owned DVDs. Although it could use a more recent update, the info is still relevant and useful for anyone who likes to save money:
http://geocities.com/voiceroy/dvd.html
Just as an example, here are some recent Disney purchases I got on the cheap and in great condition:
- Pollyanna
$5.99 at MovieStop, and it was also part of their Saturday Kids/Family Buy-2-Get-1-Free Sale.
- Muppet Show Season 2
$12.99 at CD Warehouse
- Bambi (Platinum Ed) AND Fantasia (60th Anniv Ed) AND Cinderella SE
...plus a 4th DVD at a GameStop B2/G2 free sale, and I got another 10% off with my discount card as well. Total cost per title from this transaction averaged $5.50 each.
- Walt Disney's Timeless Tales Vol 3
$3.49 with 50% off coupon from MovieStop.
And all of the following I got free from MovieStop's trade 4 get 1 new release free promo:
- Ratatoullie
- Pixar's Short Film Collection
- The Tick Vs Season 2
- Darkwing Duck V2
- Peter Pan (Platinum Ed)
- Robin Hood: Most Wanted Edition
...and I'm going to pick up the new Aristocats DVD at MovieStop for free on Tuesday.
And considering that most of the DVDs I traded in were all deep discount finds, the average cost out-of-pocket for the movies I traded in was about $6-8 total (yes, TOTAL... not each). That means I got all of the above listed brand new, factory-sealed DVDs for 60-80% off the retail price.
