Mexico City legalizes same-sex marriage, adoptions

(CNN) -- Mexico City, one of Latin America's largest metropolises, on Monday legalized same-sex marriage and adoption by same-sex couples.

By a vote of 39 to 20, the city's legislative assembly approved revisions to the civil code to permit same-sex marriages. Five legislators abstained.

In a separate motion, the assembly voted 31 to 24 in favor of legalizing adoption by same-sex couples, with nine abstentions.

The revision will change the definition of marriage to a union between two people, instead of the current version, which specifies a union between a man and a woman.

Civil groups in favor and opposed to the vote had gathered since early in the morning outside the legislative building.

In 2007, the legislators approved same-sex civil unions.

Mexico City is the second major Latin American city to legalize same-sex marriage.

In November, a Buenos Aires, Argentina, court legalized same-sex marriages. The first marriage to be held under the new law, however, was delayed over legal wrangling in the courts.

It's bizar that third world countries like South Africa and second-world cities like Buenos Aires and Mexico City have recognized same-sex marriage before a lot of Western democracies.

I don't know if it's lust, extreme friendship, or what. But I have this uncontrollable desire to protect her, to know that I love her, and to make sure that she won't ever be hurt again by a guy.

The problem is, she's straight. And so am I (or at least bi, I would say).

So what do I do?

Nachonaco... If you feel that way about her, you probably are bi, not straight.

But, I don't know what you could do in that situation.... If she is totally straight, then I guess the only thing you can do is offer her your friendship, and be there for her, and just let her know you care. If it can't be romance, then it wasn't meant to be.... But I'm sure you'd be, like, her best friend ever if you let that love for her come through a little bit! Everyone needs to be loved, at least a little bit.

I am so glad that Mexico City has legalized Same Sex Marriage/Adoptions. It proves that there is a definite step forward in the Gay Rights Movement.

Now I know that in my current state of residence Utah it will be a long time if ever that Gay Marriage is legalized, but here is hoping for a better year.

September 11th of '09 a friend of mine and myself, were robbed/assaulted with a metal baseball bat because we were gay. It was very frightening, thankfully neither of us had any internal damage just some very big bruises.

You always hear about things like that happening, but until it happened to me I never fully grasped how horrible it is. Some people out there are total wackjobs.

Some people are just horrible. The best thing we can do IMO educate the future generations and make sure that this kind of behaviour does not go unpunished.

No one deserves to be physically assaulted with any kind of weapon and robbed on top of it because of their differences, homosexuality included.

I can't believe that this kind of shit is still going on. I have never been discriminated against for being bi (but, I mean, I really haven't been out for very long), but I live in a really conservative place, and I've been treated badly because of being multiracial. So I can feel your pain.

This is part of the reason I've decided to be more assertive and stuff this year. I need to be assertive if I want to do anything important and get any kind of goals achieved, and my biggest goal right now is to fight homophobia. There's just no reason for it to even exist! So, who's with me, guys!? This year, we've got to raise our flags even higher, march even stronger, and stay together no matter what.

Deeply sorry to hear about the hate crime. No one, no matter who they are, deserves to be beat up over their sexual orientation or religious belief.

On a different topic, last night my parents and I were watching a special on TV at my aunt's house, starring a well known comedian known for playing a character who is a crazy old lady (hilarious character). One of the other guys at the house pointed and said "That guy's gay because he dresses up like a lady...".

As you know, I am allergic to ignorance. I find it kind of sad that most people assume that men who dress up as women are automatically gay, no matter if they do it for comedy purposes and they are straight, married men.

Let me see if I got this right, and you guys tell me if I am wrong...

Homosexuality: When a person falls in love with another person of the same sex or has a sexual preference towards people of the same gender.

Cross dress: When a person dresses up like someone from the opposite sex, often for parody and comedic purposes.

Transexual: When someone completely alters his or her gender, including the removal of genitalia.

Only ONE truly defines homosexuality. The other people just get people confused.

So no Mr. drunk ignoramus, a guy putting on a skirt doesn't make him gay, nor being a tall, muscular, macho man makes him straight either

But you're right, transexual and gay are really different things, and cross-dressing doesn't mean anything one way or the other.

But you're right, transexual and gay are really different things, and cross-dressing doesn't mean anything one way or the other.

I think the confusion comes from the fact that many transexuals claim to be gay and want to change their sex. I think its different, though. Most of the time, transexual people say that they feel they were born into the wrong sex (guy feels like a woman, woman feels like a man) and thus want to change.

Meanwhile, gay people often say that they have a sexual attraction towards someone of the same say, which is different from feeling like someone from the opposite gender.

In other words, saying "I am a woman inside the body of a man" is different from saying "I like having sex with other men". At the very least, the connotations are different.

As the only straight male member of UD (or so I think), in response to your question I have to share this story:

I used to be friends with two girls. Two attractive girls. Two very hot girls (pardon my French), with whom I've been in love each for a certain period, but always remained friends with. They were both straight and both had a boyfriend. They were very close friends, and they liked to freak out their classmates by pretending they were bi and being 'more than friends' (this was in high school and their classmates were very immature and homophobic). So they held hands and kissed, as a joke. I always felt it was more than a joke, but they denied this. Until one night I was at a party and one of the two had drunk too much and told me more than she was suppsoed to. She told me they had indeed 'slept together' and made love (without their boyfriends knowing this) and they enjoyed it very much and wanted to do it again.

I didn't sleep that night.

I asked her how this happened. Of course, I asked for much more details, but she wasn't that drunk.

She told me it just happened one time because her friend was staying the night at her place (like they had done many times before) and they both had drank more than usual, and they started to get curious. So my advice to you is: win her friendship, invite her to stay over for the night (as friends!), give her enough to drink and see where it ends!

And come tell us.

The reason I participate in this thread is because I don't like injustice, especially when your only crime is having a belief or life style that disagrees with the rest of society.

In other words, I refuse to see how a guy or girl who likes people the same gender deserves to be as punished as someone who had committed serious crimes (which are then forgiven).
