What's your career?

Post by snowbot »

I don't know if this has been discussed in the past, since I'm pretty new here, but I thought I'd ask- what's everybody do for a living?

Personally, I'm about to graduate from college, and I'm trying to narrow down my options for a next step- I'll be pursuing a music career, but since it's hard to count on finding success, I'm also considering going to grad school in order to either teach film studies or land a really cool Disney job one day! How about you guys?

I just so happen to be a college student who also manages a fake hair kiosk at a mall.

I'm eating out of a dumpster because I've spent all my money on my hardcore DVD addication.

Actually, as a few of you know I've finished a law degree, and am currently working here and there getting some money together for a trip next year.

I am also in the process of putting my first short film together, so hopefully that will lead me somewhere.

I've been a certified pharmacy tech for a little over 2 years now. It's by no means my career though, just putting me through college (although there are some people who make a career out of it). I just finished my paralegal certificate program, so I'm going to go into that for a couple of years, then off to law school!

My dad's a doctor! Anastesiologist!(sp?)
...that doesn't count, though

I'm just a boring highschool student, making money from being a photographer, babysitting, teaching English to Japanese children, and teaching Baton classes... :P

My dad's a doctor, too. Family physician - the "jack-of-all-trades" of the medical profession. And me mum's an RN, so we're just a hardcore medical family all around. :D

Myself, I'm in college, work part-time at JCPenney's. Thinking of majoring in Film Studies (yeah, I know - a useless BA :P), but after that - heh, proabably nothing really worthwhile. Some low-key job to pay the bills, 'cause I'd rather not spend half my life clawing my way to the top. I'm just a Ferdinand in a world full of fighters. :|

Who knows, though - I might find something cool in the next few years... Here's hopin', anyway.

I'm a college student, too, finishing my freshman year ... and majoring in creative writing (though I have no idea what I can realistically do with that). I work about 12 or so hours a week in my dorm's cafeteria ... but, when I go home for the summer, I'll have to have another job (and I get to bale hay and straw, too, at home ... as I live on a farm; baling is good exercise, and it is work you appreciate ... even if I don't tolerate the heat very well; lol).

I am also a college student. My original plans were to go to medical school and specialize in OB/GYN. However, since my mother was diagnosed with cancer I have been motivated and determined to work in the field. Right now, I am looking at potential graduate schools for my PH.D.. I want to specialize in a combination of cancer biology and genetics.

I know, I know, not very exciting. Hey, someone's got to do it! :)

Professional Student (11th)...it's the only thing I'm good at: going to school and doing the work and getting good grades.

If I had time to work part time, I would. I generally work for the school and community by volunteering for our community service club and playing my violin and helping to publish the school Literary Magazine.

You want the long story or short :D

After graduating from Indiana University in 1996 I took a job with a publishing company, which eventually saw me in a position as a National Account Manager. Basically I sold computer books (those of you computer geeks certainly have a few books from Que, Sams or New Riders Publishers, which are all a part of the company I worked for) and computer software (games, productivity, entertainment/edutainment, etc) to Fry's Electronics, Office Max, Office Depot and BJ's Wholesale Clubs. I travelled to each of their corporate HQs once a month and presented new titles and fought for more shelf space, introduced new promotions, developed and implemented Consumer Rebates, etc., etc. Our overall business was in decline since 1998 and we were hit hard with cuts. I survived them all until the events of 9/11 brought about one more round of cuts...and I got chopped.

Today I am currently in my second year as an Instructional Assistant with special education kids in a junor high school. I started classes in January in pursuit of my Masters Degree in Special Education, and hopefully this August I will be able to get a job at one of our middle schools here as an actual salaried special ed teacher.
