That would make sense.
Beauty And The Beast 3D early 2010, Diamond Edition late 2010
The Lion King 3D early 2011, Diamond Edition late 2011
Aladdin 3D early 2012, Diamond Edition late 2012
I'd be willing to bet that will be their strategy.
They could use the theatrical release to boost the Blu-ray/DVD sales
Get people excited about the movies again, while introducing whole new audiences to them at the same time.

Just like a regular movie at the theaters.. the DVD release of the movie will be out a few months after its release at the theaters.
I'm really looking forward to seeing these films in the theatres. When they were released I was too young to remember seeing them and would LOVE to see them on the big screen. As a non-fan of 3D in movie theatres, I have a feeling the 3D addition is going to be actually kinda neat with these.

i really like that idea too. although i think aladdin should come before lion king because it would be quite a spectacle in 3D. i think it's great that little kids will get to experience these movies in theaters again. i think its kind of sad when i kid has never seen a disney movie because their parents missed getting it for them when it was released when they were 1 or 2. that's my only problem with the whole vault system. some kids have to wait til they are 7 to see certain disney movies. i can't imagine growing up without all of mine. you know?
...Creating a Disney Digital 3-D version of "Beauty and the Beast," which won two Oscars(R) and is the only animated feature to ever receive a Best Picture nomination from the Motion Picture Academy, will be handled entirely in-house at Walt Disney Animation Studios, and will utilize innovative proprietary software, along with the latest techniques and advances in 3-D technology. Overseeing the project from the creative end will be the film's original team of acclaimed filmmakers -- producer Don Hahn, and directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale. A team of technical experts at Walt Disney Feature Animation will be headed by Sara Duran-Singer, senior vice president of Worldwide Post Production. The re-rendering is expected to take about nine months to complete, and will require a painstaking frame-by-frame analysis of the film's original computer files in order to create new images for each eye.
Don Hahn, producer of the original "Beauty and the Beast" feature as well as the upcoming Disney Digital 3-D version, adds, "It's a real thrill to be reunited with the film's original directors, Kirk and Gary, in bringing new magic to this beloved animated classic. By going back to the original animation files, which have been carefully archived for 17 years, and using the separate background, effects and character animation elements, we're able to come up with a fun and unique 3-D experience for existing and new fans of the film. With its exciting story, dazzling musical numbers, and landmark computer animated ballroom sequence, 'Beauty and the Beast' lends itself particularly well to the 3-D process, and moviegoers will feel more connected than ever with the fairy tale world of Belle, Beast and the castle's enchanted objects. It's wonderful to revisit some of our favorite animated friends, and to bring them to life in a whole new way."...
Turns out that this is coming out in June in the U.K,(which is where I'll be most of the time for the next 4 years of my life ) so I got pissed and sent the distributors an email telling them there isn't a good excuse to delay the movie... I mean these 3D movies can be distributed digitally, and it's the first hand-drawn movie to be in 3D, everyone wants to see how it turns out. So why the delay ?
Disney will be previewing a few scenes at the D23 Expo during a panel discussion about Beauty and the Beast lead by Don Hahn. I hope I can get into that event at the Expo. I'll be sure to let you all know how it looked if I can go.
The stereo conversion of Beauty and the Beast is coming to a close. A couple of people down on the first floor said that there's one more week to go and then they're done.
Originally B and B was supposed to come out on Valentine's Day, but now it's set up for a twentieth anniversary release.
"The 3-D conversion came out well, I think. We got the characters rounded and shaded. They don't look like cardboard cutouts in a ViewMaster ..."
3D-ifying the 90s films is just like IMAX-ing the 90's films. If they choose to continue this they'll probably quit after aladdin and then release really crap blu-ray releases using the 3D versions over the already damaged IMAX versons
Nah jokes. I expect ALL THREE versions on the blu ray Even if there were no bonus features I'd buy that in a snap.

3D versions will be sold separately because they require a special TV and BD player to properly out put the stereoscopic image. In addition, Beauty and the Beast will already have been available on Blu-Ray for 2 months by the time the 3D version hits theaters.
I'm currently watching and reviewing every Disney film in chronological order. You can follow along at my blog, The Disney Films, and also follow me on Twitter.

The reason for the UK delay is that BVUK sucks at releasing the animated classics on time. Big live action films like POTC are pretty much same day, animated films are always delayed. Up only came out in October and Princess and the Frog (probably the most important animated film in a decade) is coming in February.
With TPATF in February there's no way they could have released 3D B+B at the same time so that's why it was June (where did you hear this btw, I could never find a date and was getting worried!).
With the re-release being delayed until the anniversary then there's a chance (VERY small, but still a chance) that it will get a release closer to the US release. BVUK will probably not delay Toy Story 3 (they're promoting it already) so we'll get that next summer, so hopefully they won't delay Rapunzel either and therefore line the animated release schedule up with the US schedule and not delay B+B in 2011.
Or they could be pure evil and delay it until the 20th anniversary in the UK which would be October 2012! If they do they need to be fired for just being mean!

What do you mean 2 months? It's coming to Blu-ray October 2010. Re-release is November 2011.

Actually, 3D finally has a standard in which all 3D discs will be entirely backwards compatible with 2D-only equipment. It's still 2D, but will not require separate sales.

Were you able to go to the Beauty and the Beast panel, goofystitch? I was there, and was enthralled the whole time.

Whoops! I must have been really tired when I wrote that. I meant a year and 2 months.

I was. It was so cool! I was impressed with how much depth they were able to add without making it look like a pop-up book, which is how I'm used to seeing hand drawn animation in 3D.

I was impressed, too! (Side note: the Expo was mind-bogglingly wonderful, and I'm being reminded of why as I reply to this post.) Thoroughly blown away by how beautiful it was. My jaw dropped at the first shot of Belle's house... WOW. That shot, the aerial view of the village where Belle's walking toward the viewers, the wolf chase in the woods all had me FLOORED with how deep and rich they looked!
And the ballroom scene defies words. I thought it was cool to see the camera swoop down from the chandelier recreated in live action in Enchanted... and I thought the animated version in 3D looked even more REAL than that. Just... wow.
Did you talk to any of the panelists at all afterward? I met Glen Keane and Paige O'Hara.

Ariellen, I am so amazingly jealous of you right now The day that the Beauty and the Beast panel was scheduled at the Expo was the one day I couldn't make it. I'm glad to hear it was a great experience though! I can't wait to see it in 3D

Aww, too bad you couldn't make it that first day! Did you enjoy the other 3 days, though? I live on the East Coast and made a trip of the Expo with one of my roommates. SO glad that I did.
And yes, the sooner that 3D reissue gets here, the better! I was a little sad to hear that it got pushed back from February, but I love the idea of it being a 20th anniversary event. (Even if that makes me feel old )
