Do you guys think the mansion used in the movie more closely resembled the mansion at DL or WDW?

Hmmm....
It is looking pretty cool.

I haven't seen the film yet (it doesn't come out here until the end of the month!), and the US DVD comes out not long afterwards. Can anyone recommend it to me?

I figure I may as well get the US DVD with all the bonus features and watch it in the privacy of my own home...

Yeah, if there's not much time b/w the theatrical and DVD release, just wait for the DVD. Overall, it's a so-so film. It lacks the overall quality of POTC, but it does pull off some laughs (maybe some more if you're an Eddie Murphey fan, which I'm not). The effects are awesome, it seems to be big-budget. The story's not too bad, and it reminds me a lot of the attraction. The acting pretty much sucks though. Definitely worth seeing, maybe worth buying it. I'll probably make an eventual purchase, as it's probably going to be a good enough DVD, and it was a decent movie.

The DVD looks good, but I didn't like the movie at all, so I won't get. Yeah, pretty special effects and wonderful production design, but the story was more cliched than... say, Dinossaur. And what about that ending? Eeeww.
Well, you can't make every movie a "Pirates of the Caribbean"...

I Have "The Haunted Mansion" DVD In My Hands!

Post by goofystitch »

I preordered "The Haunted Mansion" through http://www.disneystore.com and it arrived today. For those of you who may have been wondering, there is no slip sleeve. I wasn't really expecting one since they appear to only come on select 2-disc sets, but I figured Disney might try to sell it to the "Pirates of the Caribbean" crowd who aren't diehard Disney fans. Anyway, I have just finished watching the special features and they are severely lacking. Here is what there is:

Bloopers- They aren't very funny. Basically just a bunch of mistakes with lines, nothing really interesting is shown.

Deleted Scene- That's right. One deleted scene. In the scene shown, all of the special effects where finished, but I know that more must have been deleted.

Raven "Superstition" Music Video- I like Raven and I think she has a great voice, but if you are a fan of the original Steevie Wonder version, you are gonna hate this. The video gets a little boring. It is just her and her dancers inside the mansion and mousoleum.

Haunted Mansion Virtual Tour- I was more excited about this feature than any other, which is probably why it was such a huge let down. It is on the annoying side, with ghost hosts Emma and Ezra letting you navigate your way through the mansion. Uninvited ghosts keep disturbing you, making it even worse. It is nice to see the intricate set more closely than in the movie, but this isn't good and it takes 23 minutes.

"Making The Mansion" Behind The Scenes Featurette- I wish this was longer than 12 minutes and it could have been way more informative.

Anatomy Of A Scene: Ghosts In The Graveyard- This is pretty cool, showing how the ghosts where digitally composited and how the effects where done. There are even interviews with the extras who play the ghosts.

Hours Of DVD-ROM Content- Ha! There is only "hours" of content if you do absolutley everything. Most of it is just arts and crafts, as well as a shortened version of the Haunted Mansion Virtual Tour. The only reason to put the disc into your computer is to watch the short featurette about the creation of the ride, as well as to register your DVD.

The DVD Guide included folds out to tell you exactly what each special feature is, gives you chapter selections, and also tries to advertise "Ghosts of the Abyss" coming to DVD as a 2-disc set, which makes me even madder that Disney put very little effort into this release. There is nothing new in the coupon book. Although, if you haven't already picked up "Lion King 1.5," "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Holes," "The Nightmare Before Christmas," or the remake of "Freaky Friday," you should find the coupon book helpful. There is the same old advertisement for "Aladdin" in this book. The DVD also comes with a sweepstakes entry form to win many "The Haunted Mansion" prizes, as well as the grand prize of a trip to Disneyland to ride The Tower of Terror.

I will be watching the movie tonight with my family, and even though I saw the film in theaters, I will post a review after watching it so it is fresh in my head. There is also a commentary on the DVD with Don Hahn, Jay Redd, and David Berenbaum which I am hoping is good.

P.S: The "Vesion Francise Incluse" sticker shown in almost every picture of the cover art was not anywhere on my DVD case. I am glad because if it was part of the cover, it would completely ruin it. My only gripe with the cover art is that the widescreen banner at the top is much bigger than it needed to be.[/b]

I really wish Disney would have done some sort of look at the 2 mansions (DL & WDW) and put it on the DVD, as they did w/ Pirates.

My Review

Post by goofystitch »

Upon second viewing,(I saw it in theaters and just watched it on DVD) it was not as good as the first time. Maybe it is because I already knew where the story was taking me, but it just didn't seem as gripping as it was the first time.

Jim Evers(Eddie Murphy) and his wife, Sarah, are partners in their own real estate agency. When workaholic Jim misses their anniversary, they decide to take a much needed weekend getaway with the kids. However, when a mysterious caller tells Jim he is interested in selling a mansion, greedy Jim forces the family to make a pit stop. But when a surprise flood strands them in the haunted mansion, it's dark secrets unfold into a quest to break the poor inhabitants of an age old curse.

The widescreen presentation is in cinemascope and the DVD transfer is excellent. The 5.1 surround sound mix is put to good use in this film. Even though it lost a lot of it's intrigue during the second viewing, and even though the special features aren't that great, I would still recomend owning this film. However, when I had my family watch it, there were mixed feelings about it. Both of my parents (around 50) liked it, My little brother(11) loved it, and my older brother(22) thought is was just soso. That is 4 out of 5.

By the way, there are two commentaries on the DVD. The other one is by the director. I started to watch the commentary with Don Hahn and the people talk about a lot of inside jokes without explaining them to the audience, therefore I stoped watching it. I will try the other commentary later.

I think I will like The Haunted Mansion because of Eddie Murphy is in this film and you know he has to be funny.

As long as that is all you have in your hands...

(I was stuck in a chat room once with a certain member of this board who will remain anonymous who could stop talking about that, but I digress...).

Anyhoo, I was considering getting this DVD at one stage, btu I think I will just not on general protest.

Nobody covers "Superstition" without feeling the wrath (just the wrath, nothing else mind you) of Loomis!
