The Pink Panther and Mr. Magoo

Post by jlppr »

i'm doing a research on cartoons that are available on dvd because i want to complete my collection; i'm having a little trouble deciding on which set of the pink panther to get...

if anyone owns these dvd's, which one would you most recommend? i will really appreciate the help. so far i'm leaning towards: The Pink Panther Show - Classic Cartoon Collection, it seems to be the most complete without having to double dip.

as for Mr. Magoo i'm more interested in the theatrical shorts. are those available on any set? i've seen one set of the show but reviews weren't too good for it? then again they weren't good for the tom and jerry sets either and i personally have no problem with those, except for the fact that they left out two shorts. any opinions?

I can't help you out with Mr. Magoo, but I can with The Pink Panther cartoons. The best set for that would be The Pink Panther and Friends Classic Cartoon Collection from this year. It includes 5 discs of Pink Panther cartoons, The Ant and The Aardvark, 2 discs of The Inspector cartoons, and Roland and Rattfink. That makes a total of 9 discs. It should also be noted Volume 2 of The Inspector and Roland and Rattfink don't have individual releases yet. The 5th disc containing the remaining 16 Pink Panther cartoons don't have an individual release either (but it is available in the Pink Panther Classic Cartoon Collection 5-Disc set). So getting The Pink Panther and Friends Classic Cartoon Collection would be you're best choice. There's also The Pink Panther: A Pink Christmas DVD available that contains A Pink Christmas as well the other 2 specials; The Olym-Pinks and Pink At First Sight. It's not available in any of the Cartoon sets. Now, if you enjoy the movies as well, there's an 18-Disc Collection containing 9 of the 11 Pink Panther films and the 9 discs of Pink Panther Cartoons with the book The Pink Panther: The Ultimate Guide To The Coolest Cat In Town. The set is missing the new Collector's Edition of The Pink Panther (The Ultimate Collection disc of The Pink Panther says that is the CE but in reality it's the 2004 release), The Return Of The Pink Panther, The Pink Panther 2, and The Pink Panther: A Pink Christmas. So if I was the ultimate Pink Panther collector (and I am!) here's what you should get:

If you're a fan of the cartoons:
-The Pink Panther and Friends Classic Cartoon Collection
-The Pink Panther Classic Cartoon Collection (if only like The Pink Panther cartoons and not any other UA/DePatie-Freleng cartoons)
-The Pink Panther: A Pink Christmas

If you're a fan of both movies and cartoons:
-The Pink Panther Ultimate Collection
-The Pink Panther Collector's Edition
-The Return Of The Pink Panther (2006 Focus Features release for the better transfer)
-The Pink Panther 2
-The Pink Panther: A Pink Christmas
-BONUS: The Unknown Peter Sellers

So there you have it. Finally, I'll tell you what Pink Panther/DePatie-Freleng Cartoons are not available yet:
-The Inspector Volume 2 (it IS available, but only in the 18-Disc Ultimate collection and in the 9-Disc The Pink Panther and Friends Classic Cartoon Colelction. There's no individual release yet)
-Roland and Rattfink (same as The Inspector Volume 2)
-The Pink Panther and Sons
-Tijuana Toads
-The Blue Racer
-The Dogfather
-Crazy Legs Crane
-Hoot Kloot
-Misterjaw
-The Pink Panther Show (90's)

This has ben my 2 cents.

The films are live-action. Don't be confused by the name as the films don't feature the cartoon character (except in the opening sequences) but rather a diamond named the Pink Panther ('cuz if you hold in the light an image of springing panther can be seen clearly).

i think i'll just stick the cartoon collection then. at least for now. the live action never interested me much. the cartoon set i'll be buying for sure. that info was very helpful.
