Did some Christmas shopping yesterday and also got the following for myself...
The Gizmo doll I got off Ebay, so I'm still waiting on him. I also discovered and bought these...
Disney comics are back! This is the same company that's been doing Muppet Show and PIXAR comics for a little while now. I wanted to keep up with those, but they were too hard to find without missing issues of, so I am just going to get them whenever I can as collections (picked up the first Muppet Show collection so far, anyway). But these, THESE I wanna try to keep up with. On the Boom Kids! website, they also have a Donald Duck and Friends title up, but I haven't seen it anywhere yet. They've got a Christmas and Valentine's title posted too, and they seem to be releasing a hardcover of Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. How much of this stuff has already come out, I don't know, but those three titles I picked up are the first wave of those particular ones, and they're the only Mickey and the gang titles I've seen so far anywhere. I found these at Hastings. Not sure about the Scrooge one, as it had that old fashioned look, but the other two had all new stories. All of them have a "continued" ending so far, and the influence of Marvel already seems to be showing up. In the Walt Disney Comics and Stories title, it is all one big super hero set up, and Pete is a Doc Oc looking villain, though he is just called Peg Leg Pete, ha. Sometimes, it seems like the writing could be better with things like that here and there. They also work in stuff from the European comics, like Donald's superhero persona (something I was never too comfortable with for Donald; and there is apparently one for Daisy too...). And, I read on the site that the Donald Duck title is going to present him as a secret agent. Hmm. The Mickey title, by the way, is this big wizards story. When I first saw it, I thought of my own Disney Lord of the Rings spoof that I need to work on some more, and it certainl seems inspired by both that and Harry Potter, but moreso Lord of the Rings.
Frankly, I love that Disney comics are back, and love the art in them; it's new and great. I love that there are new stories. It's cool that they want to make reference to Disney's wide and long history, even having Mickey and the gang drop names like St. Canard the way Bruce Wayne might mention Metropolis in a Batman Movie (Batman Forever, I believe it was). However, ha, some of this is all too Looney Tunes-ish to me. I guess I'm thinking mainly about this new version of Walt Disney Comics and stories and the apparent direction they're taking Donald in. I'm sure it'll be interesting though. I will miss the variety we saw in the old Walt Disney Comics and Stories issues though, and I think that I'd feel better about this new version if it read more inspired than it does. Love the art though.
Oh, and each issue seems to have multiple covers. I really hate when they do that though. I don't need to have to make a decision about every little thing in life. Why complicated matters. I know, for those suckers who have to get the same issue multiple times so they have every cover. Well, that still sucks... Glad Disney comics are back though. I hope Disney Comics and Stories doesn't always stick with just Mickey, Donald, Scrooge and the gang though, because the way it used a wide variety of Disney characters is why I always loved that title.
