Captain EO Officially Returning to the 'World'

I was at Jay Rasulo's presentation at the D23 Expo. It started 20 minutes late and ended 20 minutes early and everyone kept wondering why it was so short. The major rumors coming out of Disney right now are that they were planning to show Captain EO and announce that it would return to Disneyland for a limited time, but they decided not to because they thought it would generate bad press. So as for now, it looks like this is not coming to Disneyland. And as far as I know, this was never planned for Disney World.

It seems like it is likely once again the EO will return to Disneyland, and an announcement may come any day now for a January return. Rumors only, of course.

From Miceage: Here we go again... Remember the Captain EO rumor we told you about months ago? After being pulled at the very last minute during the D23 Expo, the jittery lawyers and Iger himself have been put more at ease, and the announcement of EO's return to Disneyland in January should be coming any day now. Despite a less than thrilling $32M open for the "This Is It" rehearsal film, Team Disney Anaheim is looking at the merch and attendance numbers that EO could drive before World of Color opens in late April.

It is official: Captain EO will return to Disneyland for an exclusive limited run in February 2010!

2010 - Captain EO - Confirmed - (12/23/09) While Disneyland hasn’t said anything about how long Captain EO will run, we’ve heard that it will run for at least a minimum of 12 weeks. I’ve also heard that only some of the attraction’s special effects will return, notably the smoke and searchlight effect. The star field effect once built into the walls of the theater however will not return and it is unlikely that the laser beam effects will return as well.

2010 - Captain EO - Rumor - (12/23/09) Screamscape sources tell us that despite the fact that the announcement about Captain EO only mentioned it coming to Disneyland in February, there are still active plans to bring EO back to life in Epcot as well later in the year.

Editor's Note 2/11: Hundreds of Disneyland Cast Members will be testing Captain EO on Friday afternoon, but don't expect it to open this weekend as a Valentines Day gift. WDI will test the newly reprogrammed motion base theater floor to see if it syncs up with the EO film well, before they commit to using that effect with the public. There's still lots of work to do and perhaps several more weeks of waiting, although the Imagineers are burning the midnight oil and hoping for the best during the tests. - Al Lutz

Walt Disney Imagineering was "exercising the systems" of Captain EO last week, and put out a call for interested cast members to attend preview showings Friday afternoon. The announcement posted to cast members included the warning "keep in mind that while show elements may be active, the attraction is not yet complete or ready for the public," and reminded cast members that "these opportunities comes the responsibility to adhere to our Company's policies and guidelines on proprietary information and intellectual property." Cast members were told not to talk or post about their experiences.

The Disneyland Resort has not made any announcements about possible opening dates, and, with many of the Disneyland Resort publicists in Walt Disney World last week for that Resort's big Summer Nightastic press event, it was unlikely that Disneyland would schedule a newsworthy event at the same time. We've heard that Imagineering was targeting February 18th as the public opening date, assuming last week's tests went well, and we'll keep readers updated as we learn more.
