Snow White Blu-Ray Problem ?
I just tried to play Snow White on a Playstation 3 and it wouldn't go. I selected the DisneyView where it puts decorations on the sides instead of the black bars. But the PS3 froze and wouldn't do anything. I haven't tried it on a normal blu-ray player yet, so I hope it works.
Think about this. Once bread becomes toast, you can't make it back into bread.

Go and get a DVD player from 1999 and try to play a modern DVD game on in it. Go on, we'll ALL wait. At least on a BD player you can actually update your firmware. I had to dump my first generation top of the line Toshiba (the people who developed the DVD standard) simply because it refused to load anything authored after 2002.Marky_198 wrote:Updating firmware?
Another reason NOT to go Blu Ray.
Furthermore, the flexibility of the Java platform and the ability of firmware updates mean that new features can be added to Blu-Ray over time and your ancient PS3 will still be able to play new discs.
I'm not one of the people on this forum who feel the need to take sides (Both have a purpose and serve different markets) but nothing pisses me off more than stupid morons making blanket statements without even making an attempt to research or back themselves up in an attempt to shitstir.
Can you remember the first few years of DVD players?Marky_198 wrote:Updating firmware?

No?
How about I remind you?
Lots of players couldn't play various discs. The "White Rabbit" user branching on The Matrix and seamless branching (such as on The Abyss) were features which commonly didn't work. At all. With no chance of an update. But it wasn't just "advanced" features like those above which caused players to choke - sometimes simple menus could cause a player to stop - simply because of how variables were set/updated, or if there were too many chapters/titles on a disc - The Nightmare on Elm Street bonus disc caused problems on lots of players simply because it has hundreds of short clips on the same disc - some players simply couldn't store the file index!
Even The Snow White Platinum Edition DVD refused to play on early PS2 players, it only plays even today on later PS2 players with upgraded DVD drivers (but note, people with early PS2s with early DVD drivers couldn't and still can't update their old PS2s).
Check out this list from 2004 (5 years after the DVD format was released) to see how PS2 and Xbox consoles choked on some discs. Notice on the PS2 how some updates to the drivers actually introduced NEW problems!

And here's general player problems with some discs (which I doubt is definitive)
http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#1.41 (check out Question 1.47 too to read about DVD firmware)
Don't rewite history. DVD had as many computability issues as Blu-ray has/does. And people weren't put off DVD.
BTW I had a player which needed a firmware update. Most DVD players did support firmware updates. However, I had to phone up the manufacturer, report the fault, wait for them to get enough complaints to look into the issue, wait for them to write the new firmware, wait for them to press CDs, wait for the CD to be sent in the post. It took over six months for my players firmware to be updated in order to play seamless branching discs!
At least with Blu-ray people have the option of easily upgrading their players and the manufacturers are more on the ball when it comes to fixing issues. In addition new features can be added (many players have been upgraded to 1.1 or 2.0 specs without the customer having to buy a new player, or new sound-codecs have been supported). Remember, Sony insist the PS3 will be capable of supporting 3D with a firmware update - and probably most of their stand alone players too I would suggest.
How is that worse than making people buy a whole new player if they want 3D?
Edited to fix spelling. I'm sure I've still left some mistakes in though!

I tried it on my stand alone blu-ray player, and the DisneyView worked just fine. I think I like it even better than the DisneyView on Pinocchio. I don't know about the firmware on the PS3. It's my brother's, but I'll mention it to him. We watched Snow White for Halloween. It was on a widescreen tv and I wanted to see it with the DisneyView, but at least I was able to watch it period.
