Early in 1984, Don began in earnest turning the famous tale into an animated feature. He even announced it in the Fall of 1990 in his Animation Club newsletter. At the time, he described it as "a tender love story that says, 'a thing must be loved before it's lovable.' We sprinkled this classic tale with a generous amount of comedy, a little bit of terror, and a lot of love. From Nan, the clairvoyant dog, Max, a bird detective, and Otto, an escape artist lizard, to the King Bats, the Wee Beasties and Queen Livia, herself, this picture has something for everyone". An American Tail also interrupted this production.
As work began on The Land Before Time, Bluth felt that Beauty and the Beast would be his first independent picture. However in late 1986, the Disney Studio announced they were working on a version and by 1989 had begun full production (for a 1991 release). Knowing his version could not be completed before Disney's, Bluth dropped the project.
Regarding character development, we know very little about it except that Don Bluth had in mind a very different idea from that of Disney's. It seems that he wanted to make a version that was closer to the 1949 film which he loved. We also know that his film was going to include the witch Queen Livia, who, being jealous of the Beast, would have attempted to manipulate Beauty in her sleep so she would leave the castle and let the Prince die.
Wow I NEVER knew this! Thanks so much for posting, I love Don Bluth's films and it's a shame that he never got to release this, it could have really been something. It would be intresting to see have different/similar it would have been to the Disney version!

I'd be interested in seeing it executed, because on paper it seems a little goofy and underwhelming. I'm also of the belief that apart from "Anastasia", Don Bluth really hasn't done anything interesting since "An American Tail", so part of me is a little glad this didn't happen.

i bet itll be rotoscoped, beauty would look like thumbelina/xanadu's girl/anastasia/rock a doodle chick and be filled with anthropomorphic characters and highly humanistic movements ala milo j thatch.
Oh wow... I wonder how it would have turned out. Bluth during the start of his career created very unique and different animated films, easily distinguishable from anything Disney did at the time. It was until the success of Little Mermaid and the rest of the fab four films in which Bluth started making films that were similar to Disney in style, music and themes.
I would have loved to see how he would have handle the ancient fable.
Don't tell me the dog is supposed to be Beast? The dog reminds me of a longer haired version of Charlie from All Dogs go to Heaven and the girl reminds me of Thumbelina. I love Don Bluths style but sometimes the characters can look a little too similar.

Ok while I jumped to the awkward confusion of the dog being the beast....I think the below sums it up that he is not the Beast from the info sotiris2006 found on that website...
Although I swear my dog looks just like that...and he for sure is tempormental like The Beast is

That reminds me of the Prince Strongheart character from "Lady Lovelylocks", who was trapped in the form of a dog.

Me too! Takes me back to a very happy and centered time in my childhood. I have a cheapo DVD with a few episodes, but I'd dearly love to see official seasons released.
