Movies That Need Blu-ray Releases

Don't know if this has ever been a discussion topic here before, so I guess I should bring it up.

Have a film you think should get the popular HD remastering (and no, it doesn't only have to be animation or Disney)? Post your list of films that deserve the Blu-ray High-Def treatment that have yet to get one.

Pee Wee's Big Adventure (1985). No, I'm not kidding. Have you SEEN this film? Drop-dead funny. Rotten Tomatoes even gave it a 100% score.

Well, what do YOU think should get the HD makeover?

AND PLEASE; I'M BEGGING YOU ALL. Don't turn this into one of those "Screw Blu-ray, DVD's are fine for me" topics. I chose Blu-ray simply because of the true Cinematic experience you get out of the darn disc. Yes, DVD's can do the same... but Blu-ray does it better.

I really don't think any of these films are going to be lacking a Blu-ray release for too long, really... it's not like any of them are really some obscure unknown films that only a handful of people know about.

Yeah, I was kind of aware of that when I wrote the topic. But come on, Blu-ray's been out for about 3 years already, and not a word has been said on ANY of the films I mentioned. Plus, I never said they weren't going to get a release, I just said they've YET to get one.

But still, there are some movies that I'm still impatiently waiting to see turn up on DVD, like The Mating Season, The Sword and the Rose, The Magnificent Ambersons (though that's understandable given that Warner is still looking for the best source material), Johnny Guitar, Wings... And there's even some movies that have never even hit VHS or laserdisc yet. Then again, I doubt Peter Bogdanovich really wants anyone to see At Long Last Love.

Anyway, I'm sure all the high-profile titles will get Blu-Ray releases within the next few years.

Of course, the only three I could see coming out in the near future is TSOM, because it's forty-fifth anniversary's next year, and Ben-Hur, because I swear I remember reading a report that it was being remastered in time for a BD release. I think V/V really just deserves a more decent home video release than the DVD. At least a nice, decked-out 2-Disc DVD.

This just needs released, period. DVD or Blu or digital, I don't care it just needs acknowledged and released to the public (preferably restored).

King Kong (1933)

Well, Warner had a pamphlet that came with the Poltergeist last year that had King Kong as a Blu release for this year. I guess they changed their minds. This is my favorite film and I have the collector's tin. The extra's on the current set are perfect but the PQ sucks. I understand why the grain is so thick and the picture sometimes lacks clarity, 30's film stock sucks and optical F/X shots reduced clarity, but there is no excuse for the scratches, dust/dirt and flickering that is all throughout the movie. I'm hoping it was delayed because they are taking their time with it and giving it the treatment they gave Oz.

A treatment like the one given to Oz probably isn't going to help Kong. The original negative cannot be found, so all they've got to work with is a third generation dupe print. So unless the ON is found, the Blu-ray is going to look very similar to the dvd. But does a 30s film really have to be scratch free? It has its charms.

Personally, yes, I hate imperfections on old films and don't consider it charming. In-fact, I can't stand grain either but put up with it for the sake of film detail (I hope in the future they have tech that can remove it without washing out the detail). I doubt the original directors wanted the grain and imperfection but put up with it because thats all they had. The only people who purposely want that are probably horror directors.

Anyways, sorry for the rant that wasn't aimed at you. I think the print should still look better than it is. Singin' in the Rain has no negative and it looks fantastic and I understand the Kong print from Britain was well kept. Its my favorite film and I get a little worked up when discussing it.

And some directors then would've preferred to shoot in color and/or widescreen, and I don't want anybody to cut up a film or colorize it.
I hope they would just leave the grain intact. It was there to begin with, and many directors and DPs use it as an artistic way, instead of treating it as an imperfection. Steven Spielberg's movies contain quite heavy grain. So it's not just horror directors.

Didn't Warners use a British print source for the DVD of "King Kong"? I recall them saying it was the most complete, intact print they believed existed for the film.
