Looks so classic.

And I die every time I see the TV spot that says "From the directors of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin"! Makes me so nostalgic.

On this Saturday, check out USA when they play Sweet Home Alabama, they advertised showing clips of Princess and the Frog

Don't ask me WHY with THAT movie...would make more sense if they were showing something like Enchanted, but I wanted to pass on the news

I have the movie DVRed.

Perhaps because of it's Southern connection? Other than that I have no clue why they'd associate "Sweet Home Alabama" with this movie.

Reminds me of a scene in "Will & Grace" where Karen catches up with her arch enemy/best friend Candice Bergen:

KAREN: I just saw you in "Sweet Home Miss Congeniality"
CANDICE: Those are two separate movies.
KAREN: Were they? Well, not from my airplane seat...

I wish I could say differently, but The Princess and the Frog looks like a disappointment. I've always been wary of the project turning out a little too reminiscant of prior Disney films and my expectations were realized in the latest trailer. Everything from the songs (Where have I heard "when we're human" before?) to the taglines (Wishing upon a star? Is that part of the plot?) remind me of other animated flicks. And as sensitive as the filmmakers tried to be with their treatment of the ethnic and regional characters, they still come across like broad stereotypes.

I might pick this up if I see it. Used to have tonnes of Golden Books as a kid but they were all thrown out years ago...I really want to start re-collecting the Disney ones especially so this sounds perfect...

Well I can say that from the first 30 minutes of the movie that I've seen.... "Wishing upon a star" is part of the story, (spoilers) but it's more about Tiana having to work for her dreams to come true..... It's not the same as say in, Pinocchio.

To me, the film is about how faith and hard work must be united in order to accomplish goals in life. You must have faith in that you will accomplish your life's goals, but you also need to work hard to achieve it.

In Tiana's case, she focuses too much on the hard work and not enough in faith (hence why when she feels like all her hard work means nothing she wishes upon a star and meets Naveen).

The movie is also about how you must enjoy what you have rather than focusing on what you want. I figured this out by watching two scenes. The first is when Tiana's mother looks at her and says "Tiana, your father may have never gotten the place he always wanted, but he had something more important...love". Then Mama Odie tells her "You are blind as to what you need", meaning that Tiana is focusing so, so much on her restaurant dream that she is unaware that she must enjoy life as well.

I say that's pretty deep and relevant...

If you get right down to the basics of any Disney fairytale, they all revolve around finding love, a physical or emotional transformation, wishing and faith. But it's how those themes are handled in the individual stories that sets a separate tone for each film.

Nearly every fairy tale...and one can even say....most stories....are about transformation and achieving one's goals. Simba started and ended as a lion, but he started as a cub and ended up a king. Carl in Up started as a loving husband, became a disenchanted old man, and became an adoptive grandfather figure. Most stories are about growth and transformation. It's not always so black and white like from spoiled boy, to beast to a good man of course.

Is Princess and the Frog original....nope. Is anything original? Nope. But its about time they got back to their roots...hand drawn fairytales. Disney is best at it!

Exactly! I'm so tired of all the nit-picking I'm hearing over a film that's not even out yet. I personally can't wait until opening night so I can judge for myself whether or not it's "good" or "original" or whatever . . . and as long as I enjoy myself, I'll be happy.

Judging by the first 30 minutes that I saw at the D23 Expo and the musical number "When We're Human" that John Lasseter showed, I already love this film, and I've only seen slightly over a third of it. I can't wait to see the rest of it. I feel like this will probably end up being in my top 10.

This is how I feel too. I mean, I'm sure it'll be a good film, but based on everything I've read and heard, it seems more like Disney has consciously made it from the mindset of "let's recapture our glory years in this!" rather than "let's make a good film!"
