I pre-ordered my through BestBuy.com, and it got here this morning via UPS. Anywho, my boyfriend wants his own copy. So I called my old Best Buy, I used to work for. And they said, that each store will only have a minimum of 2 of the Best Buy exclusives per store.goofystitch wrote:I really hope Best Buy still has copies with the lenticular cards when I get out of class at 3:30 tomorrow. Those look really cool!

Yikes! That's such a low number. I checked and they won't let me preorder it for in store pickup, so maybe I'll order it in the morning and put in the instructions that I want the cards so I can just pick it up after class. The Little Merboy wrote:I pre-ordered my through BestBuy.com, and it got here this morning via UPS. I'm picking up the 3-disc set from Target on Blu. Saw the pictures and it looks exactly like I want. None of that extra crap like I got with Casablanca, just the movie. Still wish they didn't make Casablanca a single layered disc as The Wizard of Oz and Casablanca have about the same run time yet Oz takes up 23GB and Casablanca takes up 15GB. I want to sell my UCE, as I don't need all that junk taking up all that room, but I'm waiting for it to go dual layer and get a single disc case that doesn't suck so much (the HDDVD cover looked better). Just wish Oz was a little cheaper as I don't think $35 is a sale price but the average price (like Bladerunner). If they sold it on Amazon it would probably be $20. Maybe I should wait for BlackFriday sales since no one seems to offer first week sales anymore.

Anyone know if Target's quantities are limited?

In another forum, a Target manager posted that each store was only guaranteed 2 copies. I went to my Target today to get something else and they only had 3 copies, so anybody wanting the Target version should go ASAP.
I ordered mine this morning for Best Buy in store pickup and I'm glad I did because by the time I got there, all of the exclusive versions were gone. The lenticular cards are really nice.

I've been watching the new bonus features and I started "The Dreamer of Oz" about ten minutes ago. The transfer for this feature is awful! I know that the TV film is almost 20 years old, but so are shows like The Golden Girls and they look much better on DVD. The picture quality on this feature is worse than VHS.

Target's version isn't limited, as in numbered limited, but just limited quantities being sent out at the present to create false demand (like Nintendo's doing with the Wii). Am I right in assuming thats what you meant by limited? If its number limited, like the UCE, then I'll go out now and buy it. If its not ACTUALLY limited, then I'll wait for a sale as $35 is way too much (thats what I paid for Casablanca's UCE and more then I paid for BladeRunner's 5-disc set).

Correct. Sorry for using confusing language. I just meant that the current stock is pretty limited (i.e. each store received only limited numbers to sell). As far as I know, the printing itself is not limited to a set number (though I supposed it could be, but that hasn't been announced anywhere).jpanimation wrote:Target's version isn't limited, as in numbered limited, but just limited quantities being sent out at the present to create false demand (like Nintendo's doing with the Wii). The big rumors are that in 6 months or so, when all of the Ultimate Collector's Editions are sold out, both the 3-disc Target version and the 1-disc Wal Mart version will be made available to all retailers and will become the standard options to own Oz on Blu-Ray. So if you are unable to find a copy of the version you wanted, you should be able to pick them up down the road.
I was on the fence about getting the Target version or the UCE, but I'm really glad that I went with the UCE. It really has me excited for Snow White's collector's set.

I picked up the UCE from Best Buy today. Alas, my Best Buy didn't have the four BB-exclusive lenticular postcards. Apparently there are only 2,000 of these produced: 1,000 for the UCE DVD sets and 1,000 for the UCE BD sets. It's not that big of a deal to me, though. The packaging itself is gorgeous, especially the book. Thankfully, there's enough space inside the box for me to stick the physical collectibles from the 2005 DVD in it (the technicolor snapshots, the two vintage booklets, and the premiere ticket).
My one caveat is with the packaging of the discs themselves. The design is beautiful and classy, but not only is it prone to fingerprints, the outer slipcover is also kind of flimsy. I'm afraid it's going to wear itself out before long, especially with how tightly the digipak slips in and out of it. If the Target Emerald Edition in the standard BD case becomes widely available, I may pick that up for movie-watching, leaving the digipak version as a collectible/back up copy in the box.
I won't have time to watch the actual disc content till the weekend (I'm too busy reviewing another 1930s fantasy classic that I'm sure most members here are interested in...), but I'm already pleased with my purchase. It deserves an award for catalogue release of the year.

Got the UCE BD version at Best Buy Tuesday. Watched Dreamer of Oz first. Been wanting it to come to DVD forever. Of course, I'm disappointed in the transfer, but at least it's watchable. I wonder if that is the best version available? Thankfully, the opening is the worst part as far as the picture quality...

My own opinion of the whole "Wizard of Oz" 'what version to buy' is ridiculous. How many times will you watch every disc in a set when you just want to watch the movie itself? Why waste money on a 'deluxe' five disc set with a collector's book and poster book and things that you will end up not ever looking at again for the time you own the set?
I thought and thought about this very much, and sure I am probably the oldest person on this board, so my ideals are not in 'trying to keep up with the Joneses' and get the best one, I want to get the one that I will watch and not have to watch the extras, or if I want to watch the extras without the movie, I can, but what do I need with all the other clutter. This is a heck of a movie and it stands by itself as a "Modern Classic" in the movie world, having been seen by over 10 billion people since 1939. There are people who watch this movie once or twice a week, and there are people who dread the thought of the once a year showing on network television.
So I went looking for the version that best suited me, and fit into my budget, and I found to my surprise that the Wal-Mart Blu-Ray single-disc version with over 4 hours of extras, exclusive to Wal-Mart was the best deal. And was I ever right. I didn't know what I was getting besides the little mini-doc about restoring the classic, and a video version of 'The Wonderful World of Oz', and a couple of other unspecified shorts, along with the film commentary by John Fricke and a cast of thousands.
Well, those of you who spent more than $19.96 for your copy of "The Wizard of Oz" will be surprised to learn that the Blu-Ray single disc Wal-Mart version has everything and more than the two-or-three-disc version at Target or wherever you go to spend your money.
I have spent four hours this morning on just the extras and haven't gotten through half of them. Here is what is included in the Single-Disc Wal-Mart edition with Wal-Mart exclusive features:
Commentary by Film Historian John Fricke and tons of other people. (Will listen to this tonight when I get home from work).
"The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: The Making of a Classic" - Marrated by Angela Lansbury
"The Art of Imagination: A Tribute to Oz" (2005)
"Because of the Wonder Things It Does: The Legacy of Oz"
Memories of Oz (2001) - This is one fabulous 30 minutes you don't want to miss.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Storybook
Prettier Than Ever: The Restoration of Oz
"We Haven't Really Met Properly......" (Another really great extra about all the members of the cast)
AUDIO:
Music and Effects Track Only
Original Mono Track
Jukebox:
Leo Is On The Air Radio Promo
Good News of 1939 Radio Show
Sing-A-Long
Brings up all the words on the screen so you can sing along with your favorite songs from "The Wizard of Oz".
EXTRAS:
Trailers from the original 1939 to present day (total of 6)
ADDITIONAL FOOTAGE:
Harold Arlen's Home Movies
Extended and Additional Deleted Footage:
7 different scenes
And of course the BD Live special extras with your BD portal.
There are lots of other little things that I know I have skipped over but that list is very accurate and like I have said, I watched about four hours worth and am only about 1/3 through all the extras. I don't usually care about commentary tracks, but the reviews I have read about John Fricke's commentary on this movie, makes me want to watch it, so that will be my next viewing of 'Oz', tonight when I get home from work.
Hope this helps some of you who are still on the fence about which version to get. Especially those who just really want the Blu-ray Hi-Def version of the film and are not that particular about the extras. Then this will be a bonus for you, and the Wal-Mart price of $19.96 is perfect for most any budget.

I can't speak for anyone else, but every time I finish watching Monty Python and the Holy Grail, I have to immediately put in the bonus disc to watch stuff like the educational film on how to use your coconuts, along with "Knights of the Round Table" in Lego. No viewing of Holly Grail is complete without those.Bill wrote:How many times will you watch every disc in a set when you just want to watch the movie itself?
Well...it's their money. And how do you know they don't look at them ever again? Are you secretly bugging our houses with video cameras?Bill wrote:Why waste money on a 'deluxe' five disc set with a collector's book and poster book and things that you will end up not ever looking at again for the time you own the set?
I have the E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial Ultimate Gift Set, which comes with a hardcover book, film cel, CD soundtrack, and certificate of authenticity, and after I watch the movie and its bonus features, I peruse through the book whilst listening to the soundtrack. Only the film cel really gets no use from me.
The single-disc Wal-Mart version is simply Disc 1 from the 2-or-3 disc versions, actually.Bill wrote:Well, those of you who spent more than $19.96 for your copy of "The Wizard of Oz" will be surprised to learn that the Blu-Ray single disc Wal-Mart version has everything and more than the two-or-three-disc version at Target or wherever you go to spend your money.
