To be honest, this is probably the wrong board for a Deep Purple appreciation thread, but...
I (like most people I'd assume) prefer the Gillan/Blackmore/Glover/Paice formation of the band.
I saw them live in 2006 with Steve Morse, and they were awesome. Still one of the loudest shows I've ever been to.
and Tommy Bolin...well, Tommy Bolin had this unfortunate habit of picking up the scraps of other great guitarists (Blackmore in Purple, Walsh in the James Gang...etc.)
This is probably the only post you will get on this thread. Unless Mr. Toad or dvdjunkie have anything to say.

Thank you Mr. Wadding for that challenge.
Ah, yes!!! The Music of Deep Purple. One of the most unappreciated bands in its era. Who can forget those guitar riffs in "Smoke On The Water"? How about "Woman From Tokyo"?
Richie Blackmore's leadership in the band is what kept them together. And I agree in recent years their weakest link is Tommy Bolin.
Didn't realize there were any "Machine Heads" here on the UD Board.
