Distress Over Walt Disney Treasures

Post by Prince Phillip »

I've been out of the loop in recent years, but felt I needed to voice my upset over the situation with the Disney Treasures series.

I religiously bought every set through the 5th volume. (There were two in volume six that I did not consider a diehard necessity)

When Vol 7 was released I wanted ALL 3 but could not afford all three on release day, so I bought Donald and Oswald as I decided to make the cartoon sets my priority and asked for the Secrets of Disneyland set for Christmas. I never received the third set for Christmas and months later, when trying to locate it found that the value had skyrocketed. I still do not own this set.

With this past release of treasures, I again found myself short on funds and did not get the Donald volume on release day, and now find that it's value has also skyrocketed...

I suppose I have noone to blame but myself, but it pisses me off to no end that EVERY treasure I have collected to this point has NO VALUE and the two I didn't get on release day have quite a high price tag now...

Actually come to think of it, the Donald treasure may not have been available release day, in which case I can let myself off a little bit for that. But it's upsetting non-the-less.

I'm trying to decide if it's worth paying an arm and a leg for the two sets now... Or perhaps I should try to find someone with a D23 membership and buy the complete collection for $500. Only problem is that I already own most of the sets and I don't think I'll be able to re-comp their value by trying to sell them now... :(

Wow Alex, long time no see!

Anyway, I share your distress. The only Treasure I'm actively searching for is Chronological Donald, Volume 3. I had opportunities to buy it but never did as other DVDs at the time seemed like higher priorities for me to get, and when I finally decided to buy it, it was no longer in stores and cost over $100 online.

I'd love to get the D23 set, but I'm not in D23 and I certainly have better uses for $500 than rebuying half the Treasures in order to get the half I don't have. Even if I sell the ones I do have so that the money can go to the D23 one, it still wouldn't be enough anyway.

Wait, how can you say this:
it pisses me off to no end that EVERY treasure I have collected to this point has NO VALUE
...and then say you bought every volume through Wave 5?

Are you saying Mickey Mouse in Living Color Vol. I, Silly Symphonies, and The Complete Goofy have no value?

Hey, all the Treasures have value -- in the incredible film library of Walt Disney!

I'm not sure how Maryland measures up on used music and video stores, but I've found if you play Treasure-seeker often enough, all of the Treasures will turn up from time to time in the used shops far cheaper than they can be found on the net. Of course, this could be easier to do in Los Angeles...

With Dick Cook gone, I'm worried about getting the rest of the new Treasures volumes we need, particularly the remaining shorts and the TV library. I definitely want:

Ludwig VonDrake (18 TV hours)
Ranger Woodlore and Humphrey (shorts plus 4 TV hours)
Magic Mirror (6 TV hours)
Jiminy Cricket (educational shorts, plus TV hours)
Chip an Dale (shorts plus TV hour plus MouseWorks)
Prince and the Pauper (3 TV hours plus theatrical)
Spin and Marty 2 and 3 (with Annette and Darlene and Moochie)
Hardy Boys 2
Corky and White Shadow (Darlene)
Disneyland: (Around the Seasons, From Pirates of the Caribbean to The World of Tomorrow, Disneyland Showtime)
Park Films (films shown as attractions at Disneyland Walt Disney World)
Annette: The Horsemasters and Escapade in Florence
Moochie (of the Little League and Pop Warner Football)
Complete Swamp Fox (all 6 TV hours)
Disney Family Album (complete series)
The Mouse Factory Seasons 1 and 2
People and Places

MerlinJones, I think you just listed the perfect lineup for the Treasures series (or DMC Exclusives if they are restored). It makes me want them all now.

I'm not happy how Disney has done this set, either how few they have made (especially lately) or how much they cost to complete your collection or for that mater how it almost seems like the collection is slowing down when there is TONS more to release!

I know Disney is pushing Blue Ray, but is that really reason enough to stop with the Treasure? You know, while it would tick me off to no end, if they really wanted to get die hard collector to switch to Blue Ray, they could start releasing the new Treasures on Blue Ray and make those new sets have the stuff they still need to release!

Like I said, it would tick me off to no end, but it might also be the thing that pushes me to switch, complaining the whole way, but still. I just don't want to see the end of this series yet when there is so much to come out with still!

Just a friendly reminder from one fan to another........... :) Im just going to take this time to repeat what I have over and over. The Disney Treasures Series is a limited edition collection. Once they are gone they are gone. Be thinking right now if you plan on ever wanting the complete Zorro series and act and save your money accordingly. Once they are gone...they are gone and I would really like to have a wave come out..... and sell out and not have to hear anyone complain with regret that they decided not to pick it up. If you pass purchasing it right away just know you stand the chance of being disappointed.

Complaints are justified in regards to the first few waves as many didn't even know about the waves when those ones came out. I only learned about the Disney Treasures when I randomly found one in the store.

People and Places - the last cinema series authored by Walt not released on home video. Walt's theatrical films have to come to home video. Even as lowly a format as DVD. :)

If we can't have them on Blu-Ray, I'll settle for standard definition DVD.

Good to see you back, please stay.

I was just saying to my wife tonight that there is a ton of great material to continue the Treasures sets. Plus, it would be great to have the animated shorts on Blu-ray. I purchased all of the sets when they came out and I'm glad I did if they are going for that much money. I don't think that I could afford them now.
