"The Worst Witch", starring Tim Curry as Big Daddy Wiz and featuring the classic Halloween anthem, "Anything Can Happen on Halloween".

Ok on second thought, that's not for families, but the music is catchy.

I'd also recommend some of the more sinister fairy tales. Like, Cannon's Hansel & Gretel, also with Cloris Leachman (as she was previously mentioned) as a nasty witch. You can probably rent it from Netflix. It's an MGM DVD release. I've mentioned that movie here before.
Also, for a laugh, and of course to see a performance from horror veteran Malcolm McDowell (Cat People, Tales from the Crypt: "The Reluctant Vampire," Time After Time, Rob Zombie's Halloween & H2), Shelley Duvall's Fairy Tale Theater: Little Red Riding Hood.
These are just recommendations for the purpose of being semi-original. These would also make fun viewing for the Easter or Christmas seasons. For some less than original recommendations, how about:
The Wizard of Oz (good for all occasions)
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Beetlejuice
Edward Scissorhands
Little Shop of Horrors
Jaws
Jurassic Park
Jumanji
King Kong (the original, or Peter Jackson's version, or the one from the 70's)
Godzilla: King of the Monsters
any other Godzilla movies
And there are a lot of horror movies that families can watch together. Like the whole batch of Universal monster movies:
Dracula
Frankenstein
The Wolf Man
Creature from the Black Lagoon
The Invisible Man
Bride of Frankenstein
And, Val Lewton's movies:
Cat People
I Walked with a Zombie
The Leopard Man
The Body Snatcher
The Ghost Ship
Isle of the Dead
Bedlam
And, William Castle's movies:
House on Haunted Hill
The Tingler
13 Ghosts
Mr. Sardonicus
I Saw What You Did
Homicidal
Strait-Jacket
And, Roger Corman / Edgar Allen Poe / AIP / Vincent Price series:
The (Fall of the) House of Usher
The Pit and the Pendulum
Tales of Terror
The Masque of the Red Death
The Tomb of Ligeia
The Premature Burial
The Comedy of Terrors
The Haunted Palace
Twice Told Tales
Tower of London
And: Freaks, Phantom of the Opera, The Birds, The Innocents, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Village of the Damned, Children of the Damned, Spider Baby, Carnival of Souls, The Haunting, The Fly, The Blob, The Stepford Wives, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, and countless sequels and modern movies.
And other creepy (or potentially creepy) movies: Westworld, The Devil and Daniel Webster, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte, The Nanny (with Bette Davis), Portrait of Jennie, What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice?, Who Slew Auntie Roo?, Laura, Jane Eyre (which I've never seen, but I've heard is pretty creepy), The Uninvited, Death Takes a Holiday, Sorry Wrong Number, The Lady in White, Wicked Stepmother, The Willies, Monster Squad, Night of the Lepus, The Swarm.

Um, that is definitely not a kids movie. Don't let the cute CG fool you. I saw that movie with my cousin, both of us in our 20's, and after seeing it agreed it was actually a bit strong for kids... this coming from a man who normally doesn't give a crap about anything.o0Andy0o wrote:I was waiting for someone to say Monster House...

It's rated PG and I found it tame enough.xxhplinkxx wrote:Um, that is definitely not a kids movie. Don't let the cute CG fool you. You know, my uncle said the exact same thing. I keep thinking I should watch it to see what it's really like. Was it a good movie at least?xxhplinkxx wrote:Um, that is definitely not a kids movie. I thought it was both a) not scary and b) crappy.SpringHeelJack wrote:You know, my uncle said the exact same thing. I keep thinking I should watch it to see what it's really like. Your opinion may differ (like Coraline), but you have been warned.

Another movie came to mind, and it was filmed right here in Kelowna:
Fido
The movie is a dark comedy, I say dark because it is a zombie comedy, but it's a 'lite' dark comedy and should be good for families. If the kids can handle Beetljuice and Gremlins, then hey can handle this one. The plot on IMDB describes it:
Billy Connolly as Fido
Carrie-Ann Moss (Trinity in the Matrix trilogy)
Dylan Baker (Peter Parker's Prof. in the Spiderman movies)
Henry Czerny (Mission Impossible [1996])
Tim Blake Nelson (Dr. Sterns in last year's The Incedible Hulk)
I remember when the production crew came to town. There was a casting call for extras. I wanted to go, but an out-of-town contract job prevented me from going. Darn, I could've played a zombie.

The movie stars a number of familiar faces including:Timmy Robinson's best friend in the whole wide world is a six-foot tall rotting zombie named Fido. But when FIDO eats the next-door neighbor, Mom and Dad hit the roof, and Timmy has to go to the ends of the earth to keep Fido a part of the family. A boy-and-his-dog movie for grown ups, "FIDO" will rip your heart out

Absolutely. Loved, loved watching that movie when I was a kid, and I'm shocked Warner Brothers hasn't released it on DVD. So much fun.PeterPanfan wrote:

I try to watch it whenever it shows up on TV, but it hasn't appeared on my satellite dish for a couple of years.

These are some of my faves, in no particular order (sorry, a few Disney titles will be mentioned); some aren't actually about Halloween but I still like to watch them around Halloween:
The Midnight Hour ('80's TV movie about Halloween)
The Haunted History of Halloween (documentary
It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
Garfield's Halloween
The Worst Witch
The Witches
Hocus Pocus
The Halloween That Almost Wasn't (AKA The Night Dracula Saved the World on VHS)
the Casper movies (mainly the big screen one)
the 2 Scary Godmother specials
Tower of Terror
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (Hallmark)
Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow
Disney's animated Sleepy Hollow segment of Ichabod and Mr. Toad
Raggedy Ann and Andy and the Pumpkin Who Couldn't Smile
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
Mad Monser Party
Elvira: Mistress of the Dark
Transylvania 6-5000
Boo to you too, Winnie the Pooh (or the Heffalump Halloween)
Teen Wolf
The Harry Potter films
Halloween
Halloween 3
Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Wolf Man
Mickey's House of Villains
Witch's Night Out
Mr. Boogedy and Bride of Boogedy
The Exorcist
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Night of the Living Dead
Return to Oz
Spaced Invaders
The Company of Wolves
The Howling
The Pirates of the Caribbean and Batman films (Batman Forever is on Halloween, though it's more bad than good...)
Silver Bullet
the Universal monster classics and the Hammer Dracula films
old Horror anthology films
And any other horror movies
I'm sure I forgot some.
Some movie called "Trick Or Treat" is coming out soon too... I'm curious about that one.
