a question about region 2/PAL Disney DVD's in widescreen

Post by Richard--W »

Does anyone know if BABES IN TOYLAND, THE MISADVENTURES OF MERLIN JONES, THE MOON SPINNERS, and THE GNOME MOBILE are in widescreen on the region 2 / PAL editions?

The reason I ask is that I read reviews that claim these and other Disney DVD's are in widescreen in the U.K. I have multi-region players, so I thought I'd take a chance. When I bought KIDNAPPED, IN SEARCH OF THE CASTAWAYS and BLACKBEARD'S GHOST, however, the claim turned out to be false; they were full screen.

Only THAT DARN CAT! (1965) was in widescreen as claimed.

I know for sure that "The Moon-Spinners" is widescreen in PAL Ragion 2. I have a copy of that and can confirm. For what it is worth, I also have "The Journey of Natty Gann" and "Baby...Secret of the Lost Legend" on PAL Region 2 DVD which are also widescreen (even though they are only available fullscreen here in the States).

I think I read somewhere that those other titles you listed may just be open matte full screen, while their U.S. release was pan & scan....so you would still be getting more picture with the region 2 release. Not for sure, though.

Thanks for confirming that THE MOON SPINNERS is widescreen in region 2 PAL. I'll buy that and THE JOURNEY OF NATTY GANN, another fine film.

IN SEARCH OF THE CASTAWAYS is definitely pan & scanned in region 2 PAL. The film's 2:35 anamorphic image is tight and badly over-cropped. One might as well stick with the domestic edition.

I don't know what the administrators of Disney's home video division is thinking. They seem oblivious to industry standards, audience expectations, and consumer demands. Or, if they are aware, they don't care.

Hmmmm... I'm now debating whether or not I should double-dip for the R2 "Moon-Spinners" now. It's one of my faves. You sure it's widescreen?

Do you mean the region 2 / PAL in the U.K.?

Of the American DVD?
