iPhone 3G

Post by MadonnasManOne »

I've been wanting an iPhone since they were first released. Finally, my contract with the carrier I've been with for many years was up, and I decided that now was a good time to get an iPhone, since they were releasing a 3G version (which we get 3G coverage where I live), and the price was cheaper than the phone I was looking at with my old carrier. I went to an AT&T location, they did my credit check, told me I didn't have to pay a deposit (yippee!), and would port my current cell phone #. So, I decided to go with AT&T, so that I would finally be able to get an iPhone!

I got up yesterday morning (5:15 A.M.) got ready, and headed to the AT&T store. I arrived around 6:10 A.M., and there were already around 28 people in line (although several people were just there with family/friends, and weren't getting a phone). I ended up as #24. I didn't get into the store until 9:25 A.M., it took about 15 minutes, and I was out the door. Unfortunately, the activation process had come to a halt, and they said that I would activate it at home. No problem, except that thousands of others were trying to do the same thing. I wasn't able to get the phone activated before I had to go to work. So, I had a $300 brick, basically. After what seemed like 8 long hours, I went home from work, connected to iTunes, and was FINALLY able to activate my phone, and sync everything.

I REALLY love this phone! It's amazing all of the things it does, and the new App Store is great. I've downloaded quite a few applications. I love being able to have all my music, videos, etc. on it. It's just an amazing phone! I am so glad I finally have it, and it's cheaper and better than the first generation model. I ended up getting the 16GB model, in black.

Did anyone else here buy an iPhone 3G, yesterday? Anyone planning to? If so, I think you'll be very pleased!

Though I usually steer clear of Apple, I wouldn't mind getting one; but the data plans from Rogers are obscenely overpriced. The best they can do is a $30/month 6GB data-only plan, which means it has to be tacked onto whatever monthly rate you're already paying for voice. That way would cost me $50/month before taxes and system access fees. Considering I actually talk on my phone about 20 minutes a month, and have only sent a half-dozen text messages in my life, I really don't think it's worth it for me.

6GB seems excessive for me, anyway. If Rogers can offer that, why not a 2GB plan for an extra $10/month? I would be wiling to pay that, and I still wouldn't come near hitting that limit with the browsing and e-mailing I'd do. Of course, the fact that Rogers won't offer an unlimited data plan while carriers in most other countries do, is further proof of either their greed (likely) or incompetence (less likely). I have no interest in unlimited data myself, but the fact we don't have one is fairly noticeable.

Either way, it's hardly a necessity. If Rogers doesn't improve their plan options, I'll just put the money towards a new Q9450 CPU for my PC. I imagine there will be several competing, similar devices released to market within the next year; some likely better (and cheaper) than the iPhone. Hopefully by then, Rogers will have grown some sense and decreased their data prices... or, preferably, better Canadian carriers will have improved their networks by then.

I'm hoping to get an iPhone within the next week or two. I'm still trying to figure out which plan to go with, and that's no easy thing to figure out. Apparently all the plans (at least with AT&T in the US) come with unlimited data/internet/visual voicemail (but not unlimited texting), so that's nice.

I'm also not sure if I'll be getting the 8gb or 16gb. Since I'm not currently eligible for an AT&T upgrade, the 8gb is going to be pretty pricey, so I'm not sure that it's worth springing for the higher one. After all, 16gb isn't a lot of space anyways. Either way, the iPhone won't be replacing my iPod, just my cell phone.

The final choice to be made is, if I get the 16gb model, do I go black or white? I'm leaning toward the black.

I really like the new iPhone, but I don't have a use for it. I rarely use my cell phone at all. So I just keep a prepaid phone instead of signing a contract.

They showed the phone off on the local news and said that 3G was available here. The unlimited plan for everything was like $150 a month (thats what the reporter said, I haven't checked). Pretty pricey, but a very nice phone.

Sorry to bump up a year-old thread . . . I always seem to be behind on the times anyway. :p

I rarely used my old cell phone and already have iPods up the wazoo, so I didn't feel I really needed an iPhone. My boyfriend talked me into it though. We're both on the same phone plan anyway and now we match.

Even though I'd played with his a bit, I really had no idea how much these things can do. I'm really enjoying playing with this thing, and I love how I can browse the internet from anywhere now (and not just when I have wi-fi access) and all the different apps you can pick up are just great!

Plus maybe I wanted another chance to show off my wallpaper . . .

So yeah, I'm having too much fun here.
