So your old DVDs play fine. If you want the weekly releases of new films and catalog titles in stunning true 1080, then you buy the new Blu Ray HD release. If you don't want it, you pass.
What do Blu-Ray discs look like with a non-HD or Blu-Ray TV?? You have to buy a special TV. Then, what do those discs look like on an HD TV (I'm going to take for granted that there is no Blu-Ray TV)? I've already tried regular discs on an HD TV - they look really really bad. Are you saying a Blu-Ray player will fix that?
I would love to go Blu on everything I own. But guess what? I have a very small collection (400+) and I - of all people - can't afford to upgrade. So, what do you think it's like for people with a collection pushing 2 or 3 thousand discs?
Nor can I afford for Blu-Ray not to be the perfect and final next step in DVD technology. And it's not. Because the current buzz means studios are rushing out certain releases. Read up on the Blu-Ray release of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The faster this goes, the more films are half-assed out. When you think of it that way, what good does it do anyone to upgrade at all? Then they have to go from perfection on some to mediocrity on everything else- their regular, non-Blu Ray discs. That's a tease. And a SERIOUSLY expensive one.
Don't make it out like it's so easy to get into for everyone. Or, easy on everyone for Blu-Ray to take over. Obviously, the aggressive manner in which you're correcting me proves there is pressure in getting Blu-Ray to go ahead too fast. How many years have you been into Blu-Ray and already you're getting upset that some people aren't crazy about it.
Rudy Matt wrote:b) Nonsense -- in fact, most of the buzz around blu-Ray is how good older titles look -- films like The Adventures of Robin Hood and Sleeping Beauty look like they were shot yesterday. They are amazing. The coming Blu releases of Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind are creating huge buzz, to say nothing of Lawrence of Arabia, which will be a high def event.
You're only talking about some of the most famous movies of all-time. Blu-Ray is not like a kind of Gold Collection for certain movies. Like movies of a certain stature. They already have freaking porn in Blu-Ray. And any cheap stupid piece of garbage made today can go Blu-Ray (
Exhibit A, ladies and gentlemen). Studios do not see Blu-Ray as a Graduation Present for movies and shows that really deserve to be appreciated in the highest quality. They'll put anything out there they think will sell a lot. Which is why the ratio of movies in the format are mostly - new Hollywood big budget crappola. As it is now, there are still several movies and TV shows that we wait and wait and wait forever and ever and ever for to get a regular DVD release. It's been harder for years now to get these releases because the market is dominated by new films, new direct-to-DVD, and new novelty garbage. There is less money to get those movies and shows out onto the format. Blu-Ray isn't making things easier. It's going to make them harder. Now studios have to divide their budgets between newer movies and Blu-Rays.

Didn't understand that last part. I don't know what's so hard about typing "Amazon.com" or "DeepDiscountDVD.com" if you're looking for an older titel.
Oh, wow. This is
really embarrassing for me.
Not because you've told me something I haven't thought of. But because I've been misunderstood again (I'm still not used to it yet). And have to say something shocking as a result:
I'm talking about studios having the initiative to release shows and movies that they haven't put out yet. There is still a huge list of shows not out on DVD yet. And I know a lot of people have movies they want to see on DVD that haven't been released yet. Blu-Ray will put an even longer stall on these releases. Not to mention by the time Blu-Ray does take over... now we need a Blu-Ray release of something it took forever to get onto regular-DVD in the first place!
