Whole lotta shakin'

Post by Joey »

I wonder if the supposed disappointment and eventual loss of the Narnia franchise (was anyone really that surprised that it ended up at Fox?) was the reason the Bob Iger recently appointed Andrew Milstein as Head of Production? Someone whose background literally screams Special Effects (he was the head at Digital Domain during their heyday)?

On a side note: Could this be why Race to Witch Mountain had a very different presentation of visual effects than what was usually shown in Disney movies? I haven't seen effects like these since the glory days of Harrison and Peter Ellenshaw.

Tron?
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Mighty Joe Young?
Dinosaur?
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest?

You'd rank Race to Witch Mountain over those?

No, of course not.
I was just saying that there was something different about the effects in Race to Witch Mountain. IIRC, there was something a tad bit more organic about them and it reminded me of when Disney had their own in-house special effects department.

I know this is slightly off topic, but it is Narnia related.......

Disney channel will FINALLY premiere The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe movie (and its about time! The DVD has been out for THREE years). It'll air UNINTERRUPTED on June 19th at 8 Est / 7 Central. This means no commercial breaks unlike ABC family which takes breaks a LOT (3 1/2 hour time slot when the movie is just over 2 1/2 hours).

(edit: forgot movie name, DOH!)
Disney Channel died when they stopped airing movies with Haley mills (Parent Trap and Pollyanna) and fun adventure movies like Swiss Family Robinson. R.I.P. the REAL Disney Channel. Date of Death: When the shows became teenie bopperish.

I still can't believe Disney is not doing this, I hope it isn't too too different!

I still believe Disney really only wanted to do the most popular book in the series, i.e. "Wardrobe," but felt they painted themselves into a corner when it was such a big hit. So what do they do to justify severing ties with the series? Dump "Caspian" into theaters in May right smack-dab in between "Iron Man" and "Indiana Jones," give it a half-hearted marketing campaign, and viola! -- a sure-fire underperformer at the box office!

So, yeah, kudos to Fox for keeping the series alive...at least to complete the 'Pevensie trilogy,' if not the remaining four as well.

the reason they got rid of it was because it was Eisner who desperately wanted a Harry Potter-like film franchise.

When he was gone there was no real reason to continue making them. The most popular book had been filmed and the rest of the books don't have big appeal as movies. Especially with Disney acquiring Pixar and the Pirates franchise taking off big time at the box office.

Yeah, that makes sense, too. Funny (and sad) they'd prefer the utterly disposable "Pirates" movies over the more substantial "Narnia" movies. :?

I think it's probably time to move this to the Movies, Music & TV board since it's no longer a Disney film. I'll become more active in this thread once the Alice mania dies out and a teaser trailer for this one is released.

Disney will not produce the third "Narnia" film

Post by Cosmic Creepers »

It has been announced in the Hollywood Reporter that The Walt Disney Studios and Walden Media have opted out of co-producing/co-financing the third installment in the "Narnia" franchise. "The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader" was set to go into production in May with previous cast members [i.e. Ben Barnes, Georgie Henley, etc.] returning in their famous roles. Yet with the previous films budgets ranging somewhere near the $400 million mark many believe that the budget has forced Disney to stop production on a third film as it would be too costly. So, is Disney/Walden in the right by choosing not to make the third "Narnia" film or do you believe that they should produce it? [I know this may be kind of old news but I thought I would start this thread anyway. I don't think it has been started yet. Or maybe it has. I didn't find it when I did a search.]
