Raise the morel standard of TV (please sign this need your)

Post by Black pearl »

Hi all.

I am finding it so hard to fined anything wholesome & entertaining on television.
Just about every programme aired is polluted with one or more of the following:
Blaspheme, foul language, drugs, violence & sexual immorality, especially after 9pm.

People tend to use the argument “If you don’t like it change the channel” but in reality there is not really anything to change to.
And the people in England who “don’t like it” pay for a TV licence just like every one else in England has to.

Take blasphemy (using God’s name in vain) for example, some people find it very offensive (I am one of them) & some people do not, so if they take out the blasphemy from the programmes it would please the people who are offended by it & will the people who are not offended by it care if it is taken out?

I could go on & on about all the things that are wrong with TV but I’ll just get to the point instead.
I am going to write to the BBC and other places about airing more wholesome programs, but there is power in numbers so if you agree with this please raise post your name here, & I will add all the names to my letter.
Please get your friends & family to sign as well, or sing there name for them (with there permission) the more signatures I get the better the chance that the letter will be take notice of. If they don’t take notice at least we can say we tried.
Thank you

(I am not trying to start an argument/debate so if you do not agree with this then please kindly ignore it)

If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

I don't know how many people here are from the UK to begin with... It always sounds strange to me to hear of a "TV Licence"

Can I offer a suggestion? If you want to raise the moral standard, people might take you more seriously if you spell "moral" properly. Just a thought. But, uh, hey, good luck.

Would also help to include a link to the petition you're asking us to sign too, Black pearl. :)

Anyway, here in the US, our post-watershed time is 10:00, and usually the 10pm dramas on network tv ("NYPD Blue" for example) could get away with a couple breast flashes and an occasional "sh!t" (I remember "ER" had Dr. Greene yell it after falling out of bed).

Why is watershed so early in the UK? For us, the 9 pm slot is usually that gray area between slightly-safe tv and adult-issues tv.

I think its Fox that has the "animation domination" thing with Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad and all that which starts around 7pm. Some of that isn't what you want your seven year old seeing. Tad early, but as I would say (I'm one of those types) if you're a responsible parent, you'll change the channel.

I remember on an episode of Friends (which was aired before 10:00 PM), Joey yelled "sh!t." :P

And anyway, a LOT of people like the shows you're referring to, and I highly doubt that you can single-handely take down an entire coorporation just because you dislike their programming. :)

Haha, ever heard of ratings?

As much as I love FOX's Animation Domination, most of their shows are rated TV-14... 14 and up. So if you're a parent, don't let your 5 year old watch it! I mean, true they could just flip to the channel but if you're THAT concerned and can't trust your kids to make good judgment, just use the V-Chip, that's what it's there for!!

I honestly wish parents would RAISE THEIR KIDS instead of whining on how everything is so adults-only. There is plenty of good material out there for youngsters, parents just want to be lazy and get rid of anything they don't approve of.

Oops my bad, “morel” is a type of mushroom! Thanks for pointing that out

The Simpsons start about 4 or 5pm here in England.

I am not trying to take down an entire corporation single-handedly, I am just trying to get them to clean up there act.
I know show’s like friends, the Simpsons, Family Guy & American Dad are very popular & that they will not be stopped being aired because some people, myself included object to some of the contents.
But they could air them at a latter time & they could easily cut or beep out the swearing & blasphemy.

There is no link, just post your name here & I will add them to the letters I am going to write to the BBC & other places such as the Broadcasting Standards Authority, etc.

I agree with Amazon. TV standards are already insane enough as it is.

So if you think that what the TV airs at a certain hour is blasphemous/what have you, don't watch TV.

TV is not a babysitter, it is not a substitute to instill values. That is up to the parent/guardian....

I also agree.

Because the fact of the matter is, more people enjoy it than don't, and so long as people are tuning in, it will stay on the air.

Ah, I see. In that case, I'll decline (sorry!). I'd rather know what the letter says (as I would in an online petition) and be able to sign my own name with my own comments. Either that or write my own letter.

I can't really say that this'll help anything. Like so many on UD have posted, it's no use trying to hide everything from your kids. At least not after 10 years of age. Over-protection is what's caused teen pregnancies in the first place.

Um, what? I strongly assure you that overprotection caused teen pregnancies? Do you watch too much Secret Life of the American Teenager?

Usually over-protection (aka more than one contraceptive) can help prevent teen pregnancies and shows they know what they're doing. :P

So if you think that what the TV airs at a certain hour is blasphemous/what have you, don't watch TV.

TV is not a babysitter, it is not a substitute to instill values. That is up to the parent/guardian....
EXACTLY

I remember when I was in elementary school, they'd have a single rating bug show on the hour (if it was a movie or something it would show up then fade again)... like if the show went from 10-10:30, they'd have the TVPG show for a little bit at 10:00 and that was it until the next show started. And it wasn't that big either, it was visible enough but maybe only an eighth of the screen at most.

Well now look at it. They have these HUGE ratings that take up a fourth of the height of the screen to start, then after EVERY commercial break they come back... I mean, heaven forbid someone flips to the channel during the show proper, what will they do then?
I only hope that it doesn't become like some stations in Japan where the rating bug is there 24/7 to prevent that.

Also, wtf is that E/I crap? They almost make it like a sin to watch educational TV... I mean, are parents only going to allow their kids to watch E/I shows? I've seen some truly stupid stuff with E/I bugs... and then actually good shows don't have them. Again, I only hope that stations like Discovery Channel don't give in to the madness, that station is almost entirely educational and if they E/I bug it 24/7, that'll probably be the day I stop watching TV.

And really, it IS the parent's job to raise their kids. My parents only allowed me to watch three stations when I was little: PBS, Disney Channel, and Nickelodeon. Well Disney Channel sucks these days, but I grew up when it was actually good in the 90s... and Nickelodeon had more kid-friendly shows (though I don't mind the teen stuff now since I am one)
Did they put blocks on the cable box to prevent me from changing the channel? No. But they just trusted that I would do the right thing. I flipped to some other station once, and my mom walked in and yelled at me, telling me to turn it off.

So why can't parents today do the same? ESPECIALLY since they HAVE a V-Chip now where you can block ratings you don't like! If you have kids under 5, maybe just only allow TV-G and TV-Y? Or better yet, DON'T LET YOUR KIDS WATCH TV! If you're going to show them anything at all, maybe just get some DVDs of Sesame Street.

So I seriously wish the TV studios would stop trying to raise this generation's kids and that parents would do it instead. Good riddance, I miss the days of "if you don't like it, don't watch it", rather than them trying to ram it down our throats.
