This should be interesting. I hope that this does not extend the Oscars until about 1:00 in the morning.

Should prove to be interesting, but I don't like the idea of the Lifetime Achievement and Jean Hersholt Awards being dismissed to another dinner somewhere in town. Why can't they just cut all the awards that no one really cares about, like the technical awards. Let them have their day the day before, and then show a brief two or three minute clip of what went on. The problem with the Academy Awards is they think people really care about all the technical awards, which are in my opinion very boring. Also cut down on the miscellaneous 'junk' time, like the 'red carpet greeting' and let's try to tighten up the show with a good host and be really conscious of a time limit on acceptance speeches.

So "Up" will be the second animated film nominated for best picture. Should have been "Wall-E", but I guess this is better than nothing. Pixar should get use to having a BP nominee every year from now on (well, until they finally goof and make a real stinker).

I love this idea cause it will split the votes more, which could potentially lead to some big upsets in the coming years.

I'm not so sure that Up will get a Best Picture nomination. I think that as long as there is a category for Best Animated Feature, that the Academy will not recognize animation for the top prize. Now if they announce they are dropping the animation category then all bets are off.

UD mentioned it on the front page yesterday too:
  • Following one of the more griped about Best Picture fields in recent history, the Academy Awards of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that the number of nominees for its top prize will double, from 5 to 10, beginning with next year's ceremony for 2009 films. Ten films competed for the Best Picture Oscar from 1932 to 1943, but in the sixty-five years since, there have been just five nominees annually. The decision is expected to considerably improve the odds of blockbusters, comedies, and animated films, all of which have been severely underrepresented in the category, especially of late. From now on, any Best Picture snub is going to carry more of a sting, while acclaimed, well-attended works, like those from Pixar Animation Studios, are much more likely to be recognized.

They should just adjust the actors and actress awards to incorporate both lead and supporting roles. That'll cut time. No offense to anyone who misses the nominations, of course.

I'm confused, are you suggesting there just be one acting award?

No, I'm saying there should only be two. One for Male and one for Female, any role.

sorry but i literally lol b/c you would like seeing the tech awards.

and yes, i came out of my hiatus/lurkdom to tell you that.

and now that i'm back...i think this is a good idea since a lot of great movies have been snubbed in the past. last year there were a few solid movies that were snubbed and deserving of at least a nomination. i just hope they don't all of sudden decide to increase actor noms to ten as well...totally unlikely, but if that happened, holy fudge the torture that ceremony would be.

Yeah... no. That's shutting a lot of great performances. Bad idea.
