The purpose of this thread is to discuss the two Dragonheart films by Universal Pictures.
DragonHeart(1996): Very good film. Particularly moving in the scenes concerning Draco. Dennis Quaid and Dina Myer were excellent as Sir Bowen and Kara. Julie Christie was simply amazing as Queen Aislinn. I wish she had been given more screen time. Lee Oakes was very good as the young Einon. David Thewlis portrayed the older Einon with chilling effectivness. But Sean Connery trumps them all as the voice of Draco. When he speaks you can feel how tortured Draco is. My favorite scene was the revelation at Avalon. The final scene was very heartbreaking. I've also read the novelization and it is better than the film. When the film was made the scene from the novel where Kara gives Bowen her father's headband was left out. I feel that part should have been filmed because I was confused the first time I saw the headband around Bowen's arm without any explanation why.
Breathtaking film.

Back in 1996 I fell in love with this picture. I was getting into the CG effects found in movies and thought Draco was amazing. I really wanted to go see this film in the theaters...and I did.
The theater I went to only had around two to three other people so the experience was rather intimate.
While the story was not as strong as expected the characters were indeed memorable, especially Draco. Simply put without the stunning CG and the vocal performance by Sean Connery the movie would have been just OK.
The chemistry between Draco and the Knight was also great, filled with humor, friendship and heart. George Lucas should have seen this film when he made the Star Wars prequels just to get the interaction between CG and humans right.
The music is also great. To The Stars eventually became an anthem in film trailers. The trailers for Mulan and Patch Addams both include this song, and its easily one of the best things to come out of the film.
The sequel was alright, but it proved my point that without a strong dragon character the story falls flat. It was neat how they discovered a new dragon egg and I liked the young dragon. But the story was messy and didn't quite get what was the issue.
So long story short...
First movie great, second movie just alright.

I remember this one as being advertised with how the creators of Jurassic Park CGI dinosaurs made Draco. They pushed that A LOT. But really, it was a fantastic movie! Just the right mix of action, drama, and comedy. Sean Connery is the best dragon ever
It was a great story. I hated Ivan, he was a great villain. Such a dirty little bastard. IMO, one of the best fantasy villains by far because you really do hate him. His father is dying and he just takes the crown, doesn't shed a tear, blinds Kara's (I think her name was) father, attempts to rape Kara, and kills his own mother. I remember as a kid hating him so much, and then when I saw Black Beauty, he played such a kind character, it was amazing to see how easy acting came to him.
I also agree about the interaction between CGI and human characters. It was seamless, especially for its time. Yes of course Jurassic Park was one of the first ones to do it and do it well, but its different directing actors to run and scream from a CGI dinosaur, another to look a CGI dragon in the eye and speak to it, conveying all the emotion necessary to make the illusion work.
The second movie was ok. I agree. I hated how they added bathroom humor to it though.
