Well, Harald Siepermann hadn't heard it was resuming production (but added that didn't mean it hadn't).

You can read that at my blog (click my favorite characters banner below!)

Now, Mike Gabriel, (whom Gnomeo says could be the director) responded and didn't really add any details.

I've included my e-mail to him, followed by his response.

I am a Disney animation fan and am curious about where you will go next at Disney.I was recently reading an interview with Alan Menken where he stated he is working on two 'cartoon's (the interview was translated from Italian) - Rapunzel and 'Snow Queen'.

Does this mean that "The Snow Queen" will be made after all? Is it traditionally-animated like "The Princess and the Frog" or CGI like "Rapunzel"?

Is the actual Walt Disney Animation Studios creating it?

I ask because the rumor has always been that you are directing it. Is that true?

And will it be released in late 2013?

Any help is appreciated!

Thank you,

Neal Patten

P.S. I love the tiny bit of 'Lorenzo' I've seen online (mainly stills and concept art, a few seconds of footage) and have been trying to find a legitimate way to see the beautiful short. Any news on a DVD release? "The Fantasia" and "Fantasia/2000" Blu-ray releases in 2010 would be a fitting place!

I have no firm info on that but it is expected once we have enough shorts to merit a full dvd. Should be within a year or so I would guess. But just guessing. Sorry I can't be of more help. Glad you like Lorenzo. I am anxious to get it released, believe me.

Perhaps I'm reading too far into it, but I think it's interesting that while I called it "The Snow Queen", he merely referred to it as 'Snow Queen'. Alan Menken also called it 'Snow Queen'. No The affixed. Finally, he didn't say "that project was canceled" (a response I got from a Disney animator when I asked about the status of "Joe Jump"). Instead, he said Disney wants no information out at this point. That's not a "yes, production has resumed", but it's also not a "no, that project is dead".

Again, maybe I'm just reading too far into this.

About the word "The": Many people call The Lion King just Lion King, or, heck, some people call The Hunchback of Notre Dame just Hunchback. That might be just looking into it too much. I could be wrong.

Yay for a new shorts DVD, though! I hope it is comprised of all the shorts that were supposed to be in Fantasia 2006. I know that One By One and The Little Matchgirl are already out on DVD; my reasoning for not buying the Pixar Shorts DVD was because I already have the shorts. If Lorenzo and Destino are on it, though, I will definitely buy it.

Well, Destino is getting its own DVD and a documentary about its production next year.

For some people (I may be included), we're too lazy to switch the DVD four times to see each of these shorts. We'd prefer a fluid sitting of the four shorts airing one after another - which is what a new DVD could do, rather than rotating "The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride" Special Edition, "The Little Mermaid" Platinum Edition, 'Destino' on DVD and whatever DVD contains 'Lorenzo'.

I'll believe it when I see it. I've waited YEARS. At least I've watched the short on YouTube, but I want the DVD, dammit! :D

From bcdb.com:

Molly puts a hex on Lorenzo's tail, and now it has a mind of its own.

Or, if you want a more detailed summary;

The way he phrased it:
the studio doesn't want Snow Queen info out at this point.
only confirms they are working on it. But it probaply hasn't received the green light yet.

My best guess is that the directors (Musker, Clements or Gabriel) want to do it traditionally. But I think higher ups want to wait for the opening weekend numbers of The Princess and the Frog.

If that one opens big, it'll go into production and they'll probaply announce something the monday after. That would also be in line with what I read on TAG blog. Something about someone complaining that the next handdrawn film wouldn't be going into production for another 4 months or so. They were probaply aware of the Winnie the Pooh film at that point so I dout he or she was refering to that film.

Well, yes, the way he phrased it did seem conclusive but I'm going to continue to regard it as a rumor, as to not get my hopes up.

This would be a very exciting choice! It has a story filled with the potential of great disney magic!

Now what would make me really happy with disney , in regards to rumored projects, is if they would animate a version of Aida! sigh, one can dream...
