I agree that the Boo ending was wrapped up so nicely that if a sequel is in the works, I would almost prefer that Boo be left out of it.

Pixar has set a November 16, 2012 release date for Monsters Inc. 2 (or whatever it’ll be called). The company that only makes hits has also announced Brave will be released on June 15, 2012. Brave used to be called The Bear and the Bow.

Pixar will release two films in the same year? That would be a Pixar first.

Up till now, I just wrote this off as Fan Boy speculation. The intern is full of that anyway. But, now it looks like it is the real deal. I can't believe Pixar is doing this! Are they loosing it? Have they gone mad?!

Docter has pretty much already stated that he isn't directing it.
This is what he had to say when asked about a Monsters sequel a few days ago.

Docter:...For me, the most interesting part is usually taking something new on, so the film I'm developing now is an original project....

Well, considering they are responsible for far-and-away the best animated sequel (IMO), I have faith in them. That said, I'm not all that excited for Cars 2 and as much as I'm a big fan of Monsters Inc, I thought they ended the first one pretty nicely.

As for Finding Nemo 2, I think Andrew Stanton has said he doesn't want to see one. I think it's been guaranteed these are the only Pixars that won't get sequels:

A Bug's Life
Finding Nemo
Ratatouille
Wall-E
Up

Which leaves The Incredibles 2 as the last possible sequel Pixar can do and Bird hasn't poo-pooed the possibility of doing one. To be honest, I would rather he do that than Mission: Impossible IV.

yeah I agree. Why would he do MI:4?? Everyone knows that movie exists solely to try and fix Tom Cruise's reputation, which isn't gonna happen anyway. He's an idiot and he's been exposed as such. Audiences have moved on, the industry and mr Cruise himself should do the same. Brad Bird would be a complete tool if he made that film just to be able to make his earthquake movie. He'd be a bigger tool than when he'd just go ahead and finally make Incredibles 2.

Wait, so we ARE getting a Monsters, Inc. 2!? OMG! I'm actually rather excited! The only really bad news is that *shudders* Brave has been delayed. Really!? That's worse than Tangled! Oh well, still, it's not coming out as soon as I thought, and that's a disappointment.

So, here's my hopes for MI2.... Sulley comes back and finds Boo (Mary, now) a teenager. For some reason, Sulley and Mike end up in the real world, and the three of them have a crazy adventure. Weird? Maybe. But it would be fun!

It is annoying, though. The only Pixar movie that really begs to be sequal-ized is The Incredibles! NOT MI, NOT Cars. Just The Incredibles. While I'm sure that those two sequels will be fantastic.... I just really, really, really wanna see a sequel to The Incredibles someday....

I don't see the creative or financial (read: franchise possibilities) logic behind doing a sequel for Monsters Inc, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

I agree with you there. And now, with 3 of their next four films being sequels, it's like Pixar can't greenlight another sequel without eliciting one long collective groan from the public. Mind you, I'm sure the films will all be great. But this is Pixar, who seems to have gone out of their way in the past few years to not repeat themselves... so it's more than a little odd that they're making sequels to films that have no creative need for them. I enjoy these universes as much as anyone and I'm sure if there are satisfying sequels to be made, they are to be done by Pixar and sooner rather than later. But I think they're really testing their reputation for originality by doing all these sequels practically back-to-back-to-back. It's like popping in a 2002 Disney DVD and being bombarded with previews for 8 different sequels; maybe not all of them were bad, but it's a poor reflection of the company's creativity. (Not that I'm comparing Pixar films to 2002 DTV sequels.) Seems like by the time they finally get to <i>Incredibles 2</i>, Craig T. Nelson will be an old, old man. At least the live-action films being developed by Pixar people count for something decidedly different.

Interesting article. I think Ash Brannon could be a nice ideal choice, since he was a co-director on Toy Story 2 and he was a director on the very funny, but practically forgotten animated film Surf's Up. Though, he has a project called Turkeys currently in development.

There's also David Silverman, who co-directed the first Monsters, Inc.
