This will be the biggest online Extravaganza of the year featuring Singing and Tributes To Hollywoods Leading Lady Miss Doris Day!

For all of you who don't know who Doris Day Is Here Is A Brief Biograhy

By Stephen Munns President of http://www.dorisdaytribute.com

Born Doris Mary Anne von Kappelhoff on the 3rd of April 1924, she grew up in Evanston, a suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio (USA). It was during her teens, after encouragement from her mother, that she began studying with a vocal coach who arranged for her to perform on local radio. Needless to say, she was soon snapped up by band leader Barney Rapp. Rapp was also instrumental in changing her name:

“When he asked me my name I said it was Doris Kappelhoff. He said it’s a very nice name but (laughs) it’s a little too long for the marquee outside.” – Doris Day

Rapp was impressed enough to hire her after she sang Day After Day, and the song’s title inspired her new stage name….Doris Day.

Subsequently, Doris moved to Chicago to sing with Bob Crosby and his Bobcats and within weeks, aged only 16, found herself in New York fronting Les Brown’s band. Touring and a series of successful records followed, such as the huge million-seller Sentimental Journey (1945). This paved the way to an inevitable solo recording contract which came when Columbia Records signed her.

Doris began recording for Columbia in February 1947, heralding the start of a very productive partnership. Over the next twenty years, hundreds of magical recordings followed, establishing her as one of America’s foremost female vocalists. She also achieved commercially eleven Top 20 albums in the USA and over fifty hit singles world-wide, including million sellers like Love Somebody (1948), It’s Magic (1948), A Guy Is A Guy (1952), and Academy Award winning songs Secret Love (1954) and Que Sera, Sera (1956).

“When I recorded for Columbia, I could usually do anything in one take…I would invariably want to use the first take because that would be the one that was spontaneous and fresh.” – Doris Day

If this wasn’t impressive enough, in 1947 a very young Doris Day also began her transition into motion pictures, initially signing to Warner Bros. A score of musical and dramatic roles followed including Calamity Jane (1953), Love Me Or Leave Me (1955) and Alfred Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956). Her career then soared to new heights as a result of a glowing performance alongside leading man Rock Hudson in the romantic-comedy Pillow Talk (1959). For this role she was nominated at the Oscars for “Best Actress”. Soon after, she had established herself as “America’s #1 Box-Office Attraction” retaining this prestigious position with further releases such as Lover Come Back (1961), That Touch of Mink (1962) and Move Over, Darling (1963).

During the late 1960s, Doris began slowly but surely taking a step back from Hollywood’s fast paced showbiz world. Having made a total of 39 films she left the big screen to appear in The Doris Day Show (1968-73) a hugely popular prime time family-sitcom for American network CBS. By the mid 1970s, she was all but ready to leave the glitzy spotlight of Tinseltown. Publishing her memoirs in her #1 best-seller Her Own Story (1975) was her way to close one chapter in order to begin another just as exciting and rewarding in her new home of Carmel, California (USA).

Although the Doris of today is so far removed from her showbiz heyday, she still remains the same vibrant and sunny character that people remember. It’s just that her days of being in make-up, on film sets or at Columbia’s recording studios are now replaced with eventful days surrounded by and caring for her many four legged friends, who live with her on her vast and picturesque estate.

Her concerns are no longer learning lines or lyrics but to lobby tirelessly for the sake of suffering animals, defending their rights to the hilt. This is something she does out of sheer passion and sincere conviction through her two animal charities, the Doris Day Animal League and the Doris Day Animal Foundation.

No matter whether Doris ever chooses to return to the world of entertainment there is no denying her legacy of music and film will remain forever young in the hearts of the people who discover it.

I LOVE Doris Day!

Did you know that Marlon Brando also turns on 80 on Satutrday? And that Ms Day's two time co-star and star of Disney's 'Castaway Cowboy' and 'One Little Indian' James Garner is 76 next Wednesday (7th April). I'm gonna watch 'The Rockford Files' ALL DAY!!! Well probably not ALL day, but I might squeeze in one or two.

Unfortunatley I have to work on Saturday, but in the evening, if the party is still swinging, then you try and stop me from coming!

Until then let raise our glasses to the birthday girl and boys!! Ms Day and Misters Brando and Garner, HAPPY BIRTHDAY and love to you all.
See ya real soon!

I hope it isn't a surprise birthday party...

I can see the headlines now

Doris Day Dead at 80
April 3, 2004

Doris Day, screen legend, dropped dead in her home during a surprise birthday party. The star of so many films opened the door to her home to be greeted by hundreds of online fanatics. The shock was so severe, she suffered a massive heart attack and died before ambulances could reach her.

"The look on her face was priceless," one fan commented. "Just before she fell over anyway".

The attendees of the party have donated all their loose change to the Doris Day Animal Foundation, and her ashes will be scattered over the computers of the fan base.

April 3 will now officially be known as 'Doris Day'.

Born Doris Mary Anne von Kappelhoff on the 3rd of April 1924, she grew up in Evanston, a suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio (USA). It was during her teens...

Hey Disney Guru!

I think I've found my ideal woman. Or man (it's tough to tell, so no offence please). You're more obsessed than me! The Doris movies missing from my collection are:

It's a Great Feeling (which I have seen)
Storm Warning (which I haven't)
Starlift (haven't)
Young at Heart (have)
Tunnel of Love (haven't)
Where Were You... (have)

I can't believe you don't own Calamity Jane!! This is cornerstone for all good Doris collections!! If you havn't seen Where Were You... then you really arn't missing much. It would have to be my second least Doris movie, I'm not too keen on Jumbo. Still I would probably own it, if only for completest purposes, as it also star Terry Thomas who I like too. Maybe thats why I don't think very highly of it, two stars who I like and I found it disapointing. Maybe if I watched it again I'd like it more.

I just thought, I can use the internet at work!! I hope Doris doesn't mind me turning up in my work gear. By the way, how does an on-line party work? I've never been to one. Please let me know.

See you Saturday,

WHIP-CRACK-AWAAAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by Disney Guru »

With Me I bought the hard to find ones before I got the easy to find ones!

The 2 ones that were hardest for me to find were Starlift and Storm Warning! And Ballad Of Josie, DO NOT DISTURB, CAPRICE, and It Happened To Jane which where 4 of her 6 movies that were never commercially released were as easy as cake to find!

i love Doris Day My favorite Doris Day Film is Glass Bottom Boat! My least favorite is DO NOT DISTURB! I have seen all 39 of Doris's Movies But I only own 35 out of her 39 films. i also own Some CD'S a ton of REPRO posters and a lot of other stuff!

I never really set out to collect all of her films, I've liked for years so my collection has just grown kind naturally. It's strange that your best and least favourite films are her two with Rod Taylor. I have to say that I love Rod Taylor but like you I think Do Not Disturb just doesn't measure up. I think though that I lean more towards her films from the 1950s and if I were to compile a list of favouites my top 5 would probably be, in no particular order:

Love Me or Leave Me
My Dream is Yours
Calamity Jane
The Pajama Game
Young Man with a Horn

After those I'd probably put her films with Rock Hudson, The Thrill of It All with James Garner and a couple more of the musicals, either Romance on the High Seas or On Moonlight Bay. I do enjoy The Glass Bottom Boat in its kooky kind of way and I also have a soft spot for West Point Story, I think 'cause she seems all sweet and innocent and freckly in it.

What's your favourite of Doris' recordings? I love the Latin for Lovers album. She does a beautiful version of Our Day Will Come and Quiet Nights of Quiet stars on that one.

I'm so pleased I've found someone else who loves Doris!

It took me ages to find a recording of the Glass Bottom Boat theme song. I finally found it on an old LP called Singin' In The Rain in a charity shop. I've never seen it on CD. Is it on CD and can you tell me which one?

All this talk of Doris has made me play Latin for Lovers. Your right I probably would like Starlift (I also like Gordon Macrae) and Storm Warning as they are from the Doris era that I like best. You can't get those titles in the UK either. I have seen them on ebay, but I've never gotten around to bidding. One of these old days...
