Favourite Quotes

Post by universALLove »

Hey guys! Just wanted to know what some of your favourite quotes are. They don't necessarily have to be from films, they can be absolutely anything. So, whatever they are, care to share?

"Never trust a man with dirty fingernails." The Doctor. I try and work that into as many conversations as I can.

Other good Doctor quotes are:

"There's no point being grown-up if you can't be childish sometimes."

"The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. They don't alter their views to fit the facts. They alter the facts to fit their views."
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

The only quote I ever remember is by Dr. Seuss. "Don't cry because it's over--smile because it happened." Yeah, yeah.

Pretty much everything the Firesign Theater said in "The Further Adventures of Nick Danger". Seriously, give it a listen! It's hilarious.

A couple favorite song quotes:

"I don't live, I just exist.
I need to know the life I missed."
(Moloko - "Boo")

"And I want to lay in the passenger seat of a car.
We could drive around all night,
we wouldn't have to go too far."
(Esthero - "Country Livin' (The World I Know)")

A few of my favorite Argento (a true existentialist) film quotes:

"How strange... Before, in front of the audience, I couldn't express all the sensations that flooded my mind. But at home, I want to write it all down."
- Deep Red (1975)

"Can you tell her something about the mysterious?"
- Suspiria (1977)

"There are mysterious parts in that book, but the only true mystery is that our very lives are governed by dead people."
- Inferno (1980)

"It's all going to burn down... just like before."
- Inferno (1980)

"You can't leave! Your journey has come to an end. Everything around you will become dark and someone will take your hand. You'll be pleased. Not unhappy. You'll enjoy moments of incredible brightness."
- Inferno (1980)

"She didn't know that you, Neal, are mad! Completely mad! And it cost her her life."
- Tenebre (1982)

"Not see anything. Not feel anything. Not think anything. I just wanted to get away!"
- Opera (1987)

"I no longer wanted to see anybody. I wanted to escape altogether because I am different. I don't even vaguely resemble others, any of them."
- Opera (1987)

"Typos are very important to all written form. It gives the reader something to look for so they aren't distracted by the total lack of content in your writing." -Randy K. Milholland

I have a lot of favourite quotes, most of them from movies or TV shows, but since I am a publishing student I thought this one might be appropriate.

:D :pink: :thumb:

Anyway, some of my favourites...

"Don't grow up, you'll make a terrible old man."
-Colin (a high school friend) to Kram (my brother).

"You know those days when you get the mean reds?"
"The mean reds, you mean like the blues?"
"No. The blues are because you're getting fat and maybe it's been raining too long, you're just sad that's all. The mean reds are horrible. Suddenly you're afraid and you don't know what you're afraid of. Do you ever get that feeling?"
"Sure."
"Well, when I get it the only thing that does any good is to jump in a cab and go to Tiffany's. Calms me down right away. The quietness and the proud look of it; nothing very bad could happen to you there. If I could find a real-life place that'd make me feel like Tiffany's, then - then I'd buy some furniture and give the cat a name!"
-Holly and Paul, Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)

"True friends stab you in the front."
-Oscar Wilde

"You know it's death to strike an Egyptian."
"I know it."
"Yet you struck him. Why?"
"To save the old woman."
"What is she to you?"
"An old woman."
-Moses and Joshua, The Ten Commandments (1956)

"A woman happily in love, she burns the souffle. A woman unhappily in love, she forgets to turn on the oven."
-Baron St. Fontanel, Sabrina (1956)

"You're Mr. Thick Thick Thickety Thickface from Thicktown, Thickania! And so's your dad!"
-The Doctor, "Doctor Who: The Girl in the Fireplace" (2006)

and of course...

"No... wire... hangers. What's wire hangers doing in this closet when I told you: no wire hangers EVER? I work and work 'till I'm half-dead, and I hear people saying, "She's getting old." And what do I get? A daughter who cares as much about the beautiful dresses I give her as she cares about me! What's wire hangers doing in this closet?! Answer me! I buy you beautiful dresses, and you treat them like they were some dishrag. You do. Three hundred dollar dress on a wire hanger! We'll see how many you've got if they're hidden somewhere. We'll see...we'll see. Get out of that bed! All of this is coming out. Out! Out! Out! Out! Out! Out! You've got any more? We're gonna see how many wire hangers you've got in your closet. Wire hangers, why? Why?!?"
-Joan Crawford, Mommie Dearest (1981)

I just had that DVD in the player a couple days ago. That movie's chock full of great quotes.

I just did Argento, but I totally forgot how amazing the quotes from John Waters' films are. And Pink Flamingos has some of the best. One of my favorites is from a deleted scene:

"Central Heating?! How repellent!!"

"Don't forget that most men with nothing would rather protect the possibility of becoming rich, than face the reality of being poor." - John Dickinson from 1776. Such a cynical line, but one I think that holds great truth especially today.

Two quotes from Clue I've used quite often:

"I'm not shouting!...All right I am! I'm shouting! I'm shouting! I'm shout..."

and when somebody asks me to stop it... "Neeeeuo!"

And one of my favorite quotes from Mark Twain "Let us be thankful for the fools. But for them the rest of us could not succeed."

"On ne voit bien qu'avec le cœur. L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux."

TRANSLATED:

"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is invisible to the eye."

-Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Le Petit Prince
(one of my all-time favorite books)

The Little Prince
"Feed the birds, tuppence a bag"- Mary Poppins
"How high does the sycamore grow? If you cut it down, then you'll never know"- Pocahontas
"I do not make films primarily for children. I make them for the child in all of us, whether he be six or sixty. Call the child innocence." - Walt Disney

Yes it does. And a lot of "men" are also willing to defend the rich and forgive them of most of their crimes because they admire them for being rich.

From random movies/TV shows. There are more, but these are the ones I saw recently so they kinda stuck with me.

- Sheep go to heaven, goats go to hell.
(written on a prison wall, The X-Files)

- Kids suck.
(The Goonies)

- Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind... or forgotten.
(Lilo & Stitch)

- Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That's why it is called the present.
(from Kung Fu Panda, but I think Eleanor Roosevelt is the original author)

- Kiss my ar...tichoke!
(Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit)

- Happy endings are just stories that haven't finished yet.
(Jane Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Smith)

- Justin, honey, don't dance near the guy with his hand under his coat.
(Hilda Suarez, Ugly Betty)

- Oh, look, the naked woman is here. She's disguised in clothes.
(Ling Woo, Ally McBeal)

- The hideousness of that foot will haunt my dreams forever.
(Mr. Deeds)

- You. Should. Have. Bought. A. Squirrel.
(written on road signs, Rat Race)

- Seize the fat one!
(Robin Hood)

Claire: Okay, let's take this one step at a time; are you feeling like you're going to hurt yourself or others?
Caller 2: Yeah... I guess that depends on---
Caller 1: Do you smell like peaches?
Claire: The caller on the other line just died. I hope you're happy!
(Aliens in America)

From real people:

Some are born to sweet delight,
Some are born to endless night.
(William Blake, Auguries of Innocence)

- The place to improve the world is first in one's own heart and head and hands.
(Robert M. Persig)

- Seek and you shall find.
(The Bible – I'm not a Christian, but I really like this quote)

- No man is fit to command another that cannot command himself.
(William Penn)

- Perhaps we all give the best of our hearts uncritically to those who hardly think about us in return.
(T. H. White)

- The heart has reasons that reason cannot know.
(Blaise Pascal)

- People who claim they're evil are usually no worse than the rest of us. It's people who claim that they're good, or any way better than the rest of us, that you have to be wary of.
(Gregory Maguire, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West)

- One does not win through better sameness; one wins through uniqueness.
(Philip Kotler – he's actually talking about business, but it can be applied to life in general)

Taken directly off my Facebook (with a bit of context being given, editing to take out full names etc):

"Happiness is a butterfly which when pursued is just out of grasp... But if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you"
-Nathaniel Hawthorne

"Oh, so Pinocchio isn't a real name for children in Italy then?"
-Mel (a friend of mine...she's normally very intelligent, it's just that she sees Italy as one big Disney film!)

"Of course Mutter Courage is a tragedy. How would YOU like it if all YOUR children died?"
-Weird Greg to DH (DH being a lecturer and Weird Greg being a weird guy who was in some of my classes in the first year of uni)

"So when are you two gonna make out, then?"
-Weird Greg to Katie and Lucy (the latter two being friends of mine...seriously, Weird Greg came out with some weird things)

"You look like Avril Lavigne"
-Weird Greg to Sophie (this was to a punky girl who had several piercings and bleached white hair :p)

"Sorry you didn't get the info. Somebody has obviously forgotton to ask me to supply it!"
-Taken directly from an e-mail reply to do with French module choices...and spot the spelling mistake. ;-)

"Atheism? Oh my god!"
-Some random thing I found on one of the cubicles in the library.

"Salty! Salty! Salty!
We're going down the Balti!"
-Crazy taxi driver on the way back from a night-club

"What happens when you lose everything?
You just start again
You start all over again"
-"Apply Some Pressure" (Maximo Park)

"Achtung!"
-One of my German lecturers (who is German) back in the UK, who always says this when somebody gets something wrong (Achtung can be translated as warning/take note/watch out/attention...rather amusing since I thought Achtung should only be used to describe extremely dangerous things)

"Mummy, that old man broke my cr*ck!"
-John (a friend of mine) on how kids mispronounce words - cr*ck meant to be "mac" as in an Apple computer (coincidently I'd just got my Macbook at the time)...very immature, mean and extremely politically incorrect, I know. You'd have to have been there at the time to have found it funny.

From a trip to Paris:
"lolage"
"roffle"

"Guys, we can just split up if we want..."
-Rosemary (a really snooty girl)
